Inevitably, certain things in the comic will be predictable. Go gets a mushroom? Go's gonna get big. The trick is finding a way to circumvent expectations without completely flipping over the canon table and walking off. I don't think anybody expected Fat Go, for example, and I'm hoping nobody expected something quite like this out of Metal Go.

Unrelated: I do alot of things that are not fun. Getting a tooth pulled is probably one of the more notable ones I've done in a while.

Here's a list of virtually every power-up in the Marioverse. This will probably help Morgenstern, and anybody else that wants to suggest (read: nag for) a future event in Mushroom Go.

half-proud I already knew every power-up on the list and also half-sad that I'm that much a fanboy. I've been thinking and if someone from nintendo every would notice this I would hope a sort of "dark" or "gritty" mario game would come out. Call of Toads: Yellow switch palace ops anyone?
And you can read it as nag for, but what I was trying to say was I was trying to get into Morgensterns mind (impossible) about what strange morph Go will have next though because that's kind of the gimmick with unexpected results.
Such as a boo mushroom (what I very obviusly hinted at) making Go having to fight that he is not actual dead and battling inner life consequences that will make him pulled to the underworld or disapear completely.

Silvayne 25th Aug 2011, 2:34 PM edit delete reply
Really quick, I absolutely love this comic. The writing's superb and the art (both the old and the new) really add to it in their own way.

Anyway, sowing more Epileptic Trees... is it possible that Go's body doesn't realize it doesn't need to breathe anymore, thus the choaking? Or manybe the transformation only lasts as long as Go can hold his breath.

Anyway, a question. Maybe this has been answered, but are there two types of Koopas in this story: The ones with beaks and ones like Martello?
Morgenstern 25th Aug 2011, 4:33 PM edit delete reply
I was originally going to address it on-panel (probably somewhere around Martello's story in the last chapter), but it ended up getting tossed on the backburner. It's an issue that's brought up pretty often, though, so I'll go ahead and touch on it.

Essentially, I'm looking at Koopas as sort of a mongrel race, with inconsistent genetics. Just looking at the games, you've got Koopas with humanoid features--like Lakitu and Sumo Bros--and Koopas that seem far more draconic (hooked bills, tails, claws).

It's crossed my mind that the more "dragon-esque" features may be signs of royal ancestry (or at least lineage with the royal family), since Bowser seems to be among the most feral and inhuman of the Koopa race. You rarely see a Koopa outside of Bowser's family breathing fire, for example. I haven't really decided if I consider that aspect of their society to be Mushroom Go canon or not, though; just a passing idea.

I think alot of interpretation is from the cartoons and a few other sources insisting on calling them the Koopa Clan, or the Koopa Tribe. It always gave me this sort of Genghis Khan vibe from Bowser. Like, maybe before they became a fully established military, the Koopas were a roving band of dragonoid monster that sort of absorbed alot of the species they conquered. Maybe Bowser's the most pure blooded of what remains of the original race, and everything under him is sort of "tainted" or "impure" compared to what a Koopa is supposed to be. It might also explain why he reproduces so freaking much--he's trying to keep the pure, strong genetics alive.

Again, this is all just thoughts I've been kind of bouncing around. I'll end up having to make the idea more solidified in the comic canon later, if I go through with my future Martello plans.
Bonz0 25th Aug 2011, 6:29 PM edit delete reply
Which of course would explain why Kamek decided to take it upon himself to raise Bowser to be the king of the koopas. He realized Bowser was the last member of one of the purest breeds of Koopa, making him a strong authority figure for other Koopas to look up to. It certainly wasn't the young princes personality or intelligences that led Kamek to think he would make a good ruler.

It has always been my theory that Bowser doesn't breed at all, though. In Super Mario World it's shown that even low level Magikoopas can turn raw material into Koopa infantry. I think at some point in time Bowser realized that he needed offspring to help him rule the territories conquered by the Koopas. So he called upon the aid of his most powerful Magikoopa servants to magically create koopas in his image.

The character known as "Boom Boom" might be the result of a prototype creature. They have limited intelligence, mutate randomly, have some features in common with Bowser (similar legs, bulky, and in possession of a spiked shell despite being bipedal, which is not often seen among the koopa species), he has the fangs seen in many of the Koopalings, and they don't seem to be very many in number when compared to other koopa species. It may, in fact, be a one member species.

Eventually the magikoopas became skilled enough to create suitable offspring for Bowser. Each of the koopalings seem to be based off of one of the aspects of Bowser's personality. Interestingly enough, the two largest koopalings (Roy and Morton) seem to represent the most prevalent aspects of Bowser's personality--his ill temper and tendency to bully others. And who is the target of their bullying? Why, Iggy (intelligence) and Lemmy (innocence and an aversion to destruction), two of the smallest (Iggy is taller now but less bulky than his siblings) and least representative of Bowser's overall personality!

The Koopalings proficiency in magic also makes more sense when you consider the fact that they are magical constructs themselves.

I suppose at some point Bowser realized that the Koopalings were only good for managing small portions of the Koopa Kingdom. So he had the magikoopas create an exact replica of himself to eventually take the his throne and become leader of the Koopa Kingdom.
Grimlock13 26th Aug 2011, 2:08 PM edit delete reply
You are speaking of Bowser as if he wasn't intelligent. From what I know, he is very good with engineering and the theory behind magic. He did build his Clown-copter himself(in my knowledge) and many of his war machine seem to use magic to function(how else would the copter work and have all those power). If the koopaling are magical clone, it would mean that they all share a part of him. Iggy's genius level intelligence was probably boosted a bit, but it still come from Bowser. I wonder what does Wendy represent?
Bonz0 26th Aug 2011, 5:56 PM edit delete reply
Hmm? No, the fact that one of the koopalings is a genius means that I think Bowser IS smart, but that's it's not one of the most prevalent aspects of his personality. Bowser would be more like his son Iggy if he didn't have things like his desire for conquest or competitive nature getting in the way.

Wendy, of course, represents Bowser's selfish, vain, materialistic and spoiled side. We usually don't see this side of Bowser until he loses a fight against Mario.
Evdog 26th Aug 2011, 9:25 PM edit delete reply
I was hoping that Bowser, at least in this comic, would be a mastermind like David Xanatos. Maybe just Ludwig is...
Grimlock13 26th Aug 2011, 11:30 PM edit delete reply

Guest 26th Aug 2011, 11:23 PM edit delete reply
I honestly think he does breed. Why do you think he kidnapps the princess so much?

Chew on that for a minute.

Zypher 30th Aug 2011, 9:29 PM edit delete reply
My own 'dark' Mario story is using the idea that the dragon-esque features of Bowser are a recessive trait that is utilized amongst the superstitious Koopa society as traits for royalty. The fact that this is a genetic feature that can be coaxed isn't typically looked into in the massively-magical world of Mario, and makes it so that even the child of a king won't automatically have the traits of royalty, and is thus considered ineligible to take the throne.

To go further on this point, Bowser Jr. is the true son of King Bowser of the Koopa Clan, probably born from a concubine since there is no Queen. All of the rest of the 'invalids' without the right genes have probably gone on to live modestly, or have been given more formal training in the courts of the kingdom, or even the most elite could have been trained to become Magikoopa or generals.

The Koopalings, the seven bosses from SMB3 and SMW, are the offspring of normal, non-royal citizens. In an effort to prevent usurpers to the throne and to further bolster his own court, Bowser paid a handsome fee to the parents of the Koopalings to let Bowser formally adopt them as his own children. The parents likely live with a relatively large amount of wealth, possibly in the castle, while their children are raised personally by Bowser and his handmaidens and nurses.

The fact that there's so few Koopas with 'royal' genes can be traced back to Yoshi's Island, where the rulers seemed to be Kamek acting as a regent to the young King Bowser, and where normal Koopas and Goombas rarely ever appeared as enemies. Perhaps some cataclysm struck the ruling class in the years before, or that Kamek had a vision that this one strange child would be the one to lead a great kingdom in the future. Thus, Bowser was raised mostly in secret until he became an adult and reclaimed the lands that would become the Koopa Kingdom.

It's nice, the amount of things you can come up with when you think about how much isn't really elaborated upon in the Mario mythos.
Ranter 25th Aug 2011, 10:52 PM edit delete reply
I dunno. I sort of like Morg's theory better.

It makes more sense to me, to think that They can do magic because they inherited the ability from Bowser...and besides...THIS.

Bonz0 26th Aug 2011, 12:32 PM edit delete reply
The type of magic used by Bowser and the "geometric" magic used by the Magikoopas and Koopalings does not seem to be one in the same.

Besides, if Bowser wanted to keep the strong draconian features alive why would he breed with a HUMAN? The most logical path would be to find a female of the same caliber as himself. No such character exists. Therefore magic.
Ranter 26th Aug 2011, 4:23 PM edit delete reply
Well, you could look at it that way, or you could consider that, though they are different species, they are both royalty.

Or he could be the opposite of a furry. People are into weird stuff.

I always just assumed Magikoopas were summoning pre-existing soldiers through blocks, rather than creating sentient, fully armed soldiers wholesale. The idea that somebody could just spontaneously make fully trained troops out of yellow brick just raises way too many questions for me.
Bonz0 26th Aug 2011, 9:05 PM edit delete reply

Which is why the koopas they summon are of such limited intelligence that they will walk into lava. They're simply NOT fully trained soldiers. Just animate blocks in koopa form. The summoning pre-existing soldiers idea would certainly make more sense if the koopas that were summoned weren't the same color as the blocks used for their creation.
Ranter 27th Aug 2011, 12:23 AM edit delete reply
There is probably a range problem, as well. Going on the little I know of golems, there would need to be magic-users standing, at least a certain distance away, to control them, or at least a commander of intelligence to lead them. They couldn't fight on their own without losing focus or the ability to move at all.
EKA 27th Aug 2011, 12:33 AM edit delete reply

-Oh and metal go is most likely trying (unnecessarily) to breath, and his liquid metal lungs cannot move as fast as the flesh they were before. Thusly, he cannot get in the air his brain tells his body he needs, and subsequently "choke".
