Your "Bold" is missing a letter... Er, just kidding.

Realistically, I think we've been finding out a lot about the characters ages. Such as Guy being a kid in comparison to McCoy. Martello could be ancient for all we know. Especially considering the lifespan of certain turtles, so this could be a new take directed at that.

Or I could be overthinking it.

Joking aside, I wouldn't mind at all if she started looking more like a genuine Koopa. As far as I'm concerned, the more canon to the original Mario world, the better. I also think that, although the bags under her eyes may be a bit pronounced, the proportion in that (very difficult) first shot was spot on.

That shot in the first panel is awkward. It's not the it's wrong, it just looks that way.

But all in all, I don't think the bones in the forearm work like that, so it kinda looks like her arm is broken.

Sorry to bring up what is probably sore, but I'm sorta glad I didn't stop reading when you switched art styles. The new style has its...charm. Not to insult or anything, but the primary reason I started reading was cause of your style, and given anything else, I'd probably like this guy's style.

I wish we could remove the comments section here. I really like the comic, but after reading some of the comments people leave, I'm surprised Morgenstern hasn't quit yet. Don't give him suggestions, don't be a critical whiner, and don't get pissy because you liked the old art style better. It's not your comic, and you're lucky that you even have the ability to comment on it, as most other webcomics don't have a direct discussion going on under their pages. It is a courtesy, that if I had my way, I would have revoked a long time ago...
Reaper Guy 14th Aug 2011, 1:47 PM edit delete reply
Reaper Guy
i partially agree movethearmchair. people whine alot here and honestly some people are just mean, however every good artist should be able take criticism and continue on while also actually listening to the criticism. morgenstern clearly is a good artist
Ranter 15th Aug 2011, 1:39 AM edit delete reply
I have to disagree with you. I am also reading the comments, and I only see constructive criticism and good-fun joking around. I don't think anyone means Ob any ill. I don't see any genuine whining, and haven't for a long time.
Sei Shonagon 16th Aug 2011, 9:41 PM edit delete reply
i agree with you. Too much moaning. I like Obfuscobble's style. I thought her early contributions to this comic, were very slick and completely different from Morgenstern's work, was very good, I would have been happy to see that continue. Obfuscobble's changes (evolution?) in how the art is handled is also very interesting and it tells a very different story, one, I think, much sadder than the story told by Morgenstern, as it is a story about bending to will of public voices in these comments, not the voice of inner necessity of the artist. Also, Podcast review was weak. Better than no review. He talked about dark. Mushroom Go is not dark. There are dark comics...

I talk too much. Back to my lists...
Ranter 17th Aug 2011, 1:41 PM edit delete reply
Okay, time to rant. Some of these things are actually repititions of statements I've made before, and I apoligize deeply to he who happens to be bothered by that. It helps me to organize my thoughts.

Ob is male, and the sign of a good artist is how versatile he is. The writing of a comic doesn't act alone-- How much shadow falls on the characters and where, the smoothness or roughness of the lines, and the "reaction range", as I like to call it, all play a vital role in a way that isn't immediately noticable, but COMPLETELY changes the way you think about a character--top to bottom, inside and out. (Reaction range is...what it sounds like. The severity and "stretchiness" of facial expressions, and the practicality or drama of poses.)

Now, I'm a comic artist myself. For one which damands that this constantly changes for it's characters. If I am asked, I may someday tell which comic it is, but not for a while.

However, while I DO seriously respect Ob for his versatility and ability as an artist. I also like Morg's work, and while I do agree that there are some who should simply stop complaining, I haven't seen those people actually "whine" in a long, long time, and to tell you the truth, the people who complain abot non-existent whiners are starting to annoy me on an even worse level.
Ranter 17th Aug 2011, 1:43 PM edit delete reply
about, rather.
Ranter 17th Aug 2011, 2:22 PM edit delete reply
To Sei Shonagan

Mushroom Go may not be dark, but at least it is a rough-around-the-edges pirate story. It is filled with action, and there is some death. Ob's early art maybe wouldn't be so argued against if the way it had portayed the characters hadn't forgotten so many of the "character cues" we had gotten to know throughout Morg's art in the past. Martello lost her slouch and gained a more feminine look, many of the characters exchanged their past scruffiness for straightout prettiness and glamour. All combined, it made the characters seem very out of character.
Now that a few comics have gone by, I can accept it, because I know how hard it is to translate your style to fit that of the writer, and after all, they were only Ob's first publications of Morg's characters.

The current style saddens you because you know it's the way it is because the people asked for it, but here is what I think-- Ob accepted the critism, firstly. Ob was a gift from Morg to his viewers. Morg accepted Ob as an artist, and Ob accepted our opinions as a guideline, however trollish and angrily they might have been thrown at him. There is no way to tell because he hasn't yet posted on the comments, but I think it's likely he would have changed these things anyway, even without the protesting. I don't think Ob's current art is anything like Morg's art, but it is very, very good. I like how it complements the characters, and it displays emotion nicely. I see what you are saying, and on some level, I agree with it, but I like this current art, and how well it mixes with Morg's writing, far to much to agree completely.
DCHorror 18th Aug 2011, 5:42 AM edit delete reply
If you'd had your way, Morgenstern may very well have lost plenty of readers because he wasn't able to defend the art shift. Being able to discuss something, especially with the artist/writer, can be an incredible way to temper bad feelings.

Besides, webcomics are purely a viewer's market. You don't have to deliver a product people want to see, but you don't have to have viewers either. There is a balancing act that needs to be maintained, where you have to do what you want, but you also have to satisfy your viewer base. Saying not to give suggestions or be critical is akin to saying don't read. And if you're going to drive away their readers, what point is there for Morgen to pay someone for the new style?
DemonBlood 18th Aug 2011, 6:03 AM edit delete reply
OK, after all this different opinions on this subject, I want to know what Ob thinks of it.
Why exactly did you change your art? Because of the pressure or because you wanted to change it? And what do you think about all the guys that were yelling at you when you started doing the comic?
Please tell us.
Reaper Guy 18th Aug 2011, 10:02 PM edit delete reply

I did sort of crack up at the Liefeld comparison. Like, people are free to have their opinions and all that, but come on now. That's like saying "OH MAN, did you see that new Captain America movie? It was like HUMAN CENTIPEDE that's how bad it was" in a serious movie review.

(Yes, I am saying Rob Liefeld is the Human Centipede of artists)

Since this comic is free, you don't actually contribute anything to Morg, expect for comments, and it doesn't look like your comments are contributing much at all.

So good-bye, and don't let those 'thousands of other readers who feel that way' hit you on the way out. But, if in a week or two, you end up checking out the comic anyway, just out of curiosity, boredom, or habit, then keep your mouth shut.
