On the one hand, he's a little bitter about the whole thing. On the other hand, he really enjoys his job.

Some characters are pretty spur-of-the-moment; some of them I plan out some silly amount of time ahead, and the more I have to sit and wait to employ them, the more I dwell on who and what they are and the more deeply entrenched that character actually becomes in the surrounding canon I imagine. King Bob-omb falls into the latter category. I've been waiting to bust him out since--well, since chapter one, I think, maybe early chapter two--and he's just sort of been cooking in the back of my mind this entire time.

I've said it a few times, but I originally intended At Twisters Borough to be something of a breather chapter. With as heavy as the Thrive arc ended, I didn't want to plow straight from it into this chapter; I assumed that going directly from a story involving some very weird implications and talk of genocide, to THIS, a chapter that's already featured implied Shyguy lobotomies and that's not the heaviest thing to be going on this chapter I assure you... well, I figured it might be a bit much, and I should toss in something a little more light hearted to separate it a bit.

Obviously, that was before the more "light hearted" chapter took off on its own, and headed straight for a couple of very low places. I swear I don't really set out with the intention of being "grimdark," most of the time these things just sort of evolve and go to what seems most logical to me at the time. And it's not like they're just random acts of OH MY, GRITTINESS; the business with Boss Birdo, for instance, is going to be echoing through the comic for chapters to come in a way that I never really thought about until I put it on paper. It started off as an idea that, once it hit me, I knew I had to do it; once it was done and I realized what direction it would take the cast in, I wondered how I would have ever written the rest of this comic without it.

But I've ranted a bit. All this being said, I don't jive well with the idea of empty chapters. I like every story, every arc, every act to have some relevance or importance, even if it seems small. In fact, the changes and the messages and the concepts that seem small are my favorites, because nobody expects the small things to come back and change everything.

To understand the above exclamation point, that statement should be read like something from speed racer.

Oh Yeah!!! I feel like Palma should do something fatal to King Bob-Omb, put on sunglasses, and say "I guess you expected none from me".

@ Morgenstern: Don't worry about 'breathers'. It's not everyday that people make deep, complex stuff like this anymore. We'll get our own breathers by reading other things like Brawl In The Family and Awkward Zombie.

And Maybe King Bob-omb could pull off some sorta Sektor-esque kamikaze attack?

Fun fact: Martello is Italian for hammer.
;)

WAHAHAHAHAHA, HOW COOL!
I would've never guessed that!

That one would've worked better if Stop wouldn't be stop in Italian. :D
Like the Halt! Hammerzeit one.
Stop! Martello tempo just doesn't have that same ring to it :)

I would have guessed that Martello's name would have something to do with her hammer-throwing skill.

Anyways, keep up the good work Morgenstern and Obfuscobble. I want to see moar! Oh well, I'll have to something while I wait for next week's strip.

According to the TVTropes page, Go means 5. He's the fifth member of the Chainless.

Yup, Go means 5, it's japanese.

Yeah! And "guy", in English, refers to a support cable used to guide, steady, or secure something. Surely this refers to Guy's role in McCoy's life, turning him from a wanderer interested only in excitement and fighting into a guardian and brother figure for Guy, giving him a purpose in life.

Or, maybe because "Guy" is a term of informal address for a male. Another term of informal address for a male is the term "Mack". Guy's tribe was attacked by Mack the Knife.

Or Maybe it's a reference to Guy Fawkes, who also wore a mask.

I'M NOT READING TO MUCH INTO THINIGS, NO SIREE.

Since this is a sentient machine with no human tissue, you could get really down and dirty with exactly how he dies.
*in my opinion I think some sort of microwave device that makes his cords untwine and slowly fall apart (with appropriate oil spurting everywhere :D)

I've noticed that King Bob-omb doesn't have a fuse. Of course he wouldn't rise up against them, he doesn't have a means to blow up with.

Also, those keys on his arms. If he doesn't wind them up every now and then, do his arms lock up?

wow,he tossed a pianta, and continued talking while a bomb exploded on him, he's sentinent, and he's a king. So, why is he working for the Koopa army? he could rebel on his own, and probably succeed. (i may be overthinking)

You know, with all this talk of the odd things people think King Bob-om will do, I must mention that I don't think Morganstern has given people powers that they don't posess in Mario, so we can assume that King Bob-om is just like in Mario64. Throw him on his butt three times.
Drake 6th Aug 2011, 10:46 AM edit delete reply

If we are to make remarks about words, in the games he is called Big Bob-omb, not King Bob-omb. Have a look on the Mario Wiki.

The Art... is amazing.
I really think it has inproved since....
well.. anyway

Im gald that character art is fixed, and it looks *FABOLOUS!*.

It looks like king Bomb-Omb got some upgrades. Back into the vault i go, for another chapters. or until I find something to critize in the art.

You just cant pick on the story. It is worthy of any hate GlaDos might have, and I loe it. GO MUSHROOM GO!
