I like to sneak stupid little hidden messages into things--the harder to catch, the funnier it is to me.

Like, my comment on last week's page was a line from Mack the Knife. You'd kind of have to be a music nerd AND have played Mario RPG to really get it, though.

Like many pages before it, this one was written at a weird hour and is subject to change when I wake up and realize how silly something sounds

It originally seemed obvious to me to try and connect Smithy's Shysters with Snifits, but after long deliberation, I hit a different sort of conclusion.

Snifits will definitely be addressed someday, but they'll be hitting home closer to plots about Subcon and other Super Mario Bros 2-related material. They'll also be really effin' scary.
red shy guy 25th Jun 2011, 7:36 AM edit delete reply
awsome

also a just went back the the filler about guy and one of the options was a ...

ROBOT

what does that say!!
Pinstripe 25th Jun 2011, 7:47 AM edit delete reply
Can't wait to see you two's take on snifits - I love their character design (why can't Nintendo use them for something?). Also this page is pretty terrifying. Nice job!

I.. I don't get it? What is this? Is this how McCoy meets Guy, or something?

What is up with the "Bounce" thingie? Is that a methaphore for fighting or something?

Young, combat eager McCoy... I like it! :D
Really pulling the look and pose off well in that last panel.

And it would seem now that McCoy is older than I originally thought. And Guy probably about the same age as Palma?

...bounce?
Grimlock13 25th Jun 2011, 10:24 AM edit delete reply
Grimlock13
@sleepless
The bounce reference come from Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Star. The first official Smithy minions that we see in the game are the Shyster, a group of Shyguy look-alike creature bouncing on boosted pogo stick. In the game, they where acting like spoiled child that liked to bounce on their pogo stick all day long and no one could tell them to stop without risking a fight. That is, until Mario appeared to give them a good spanking. Here they seem to act more like a Star Trek borg that can talk, and its far more scarier.
Sleepless 25th Jun 2011, 10:27 AM edit delete reply
Thanks a lot, Grimlock! Now it starts to make sense :)

I never played Legend of the Seven Star, so that reference got lost on me...

Kat 25th Jun 2011, 1:14 PM edit delete reply
I guess we have our answer to "Can McCoy get any hotter?".
KZ 25th Jun 2011, 2:13 PM edit delete reply
@Sleepless: "Bounce" is a reference to one of the bosses (and his minions) in Super Mario RPG. This particular boss and his minions rode pogo sticks, and attacked the Mushroom Kingdom. The creepiest part of this? I can totally see this as being what happens to those captured by Smithy's minions. One of Smithy's lines in Super Mario RPG takes on a terrifying new meaning: "Why not get rid of this world of wishes, and create a world of WEAPONS!!!" *shivers*
Dry Guy 25th Jun 2011, 2:34 PM edit delete reply
Oh, wow, I didn't expect a Smithy appearance, even if it's just the name right now. Shysters being captured Shy Guys makes a lot a sense, too, and goes a long way in explaining Guy's behavior. I imagine a lot of Super Mario RPG references are going, and that's pretty awesome.

Okay, I'm enjoying this plot, and 4 panel updates are better than 3. I really cant come to grasp with how awkward Obfuscobble draws pants... First Go and now McCoy? I mean McCoy has always worn loose pants, It's just a bit strange seeing him with tight crotchy pants. I might be able to get used to Go's pants being that way, but not McCoy
Ranter 25th Jun 2011, 5:56 PM edit delete reply
Liiiiiiiike.

Although I concur with hobojoe in that want this comic to stay canon with both Morgenstern's original idea and the mario games, I think it'd be odd if in the very next comic, McCoy suddenly had somehow changed pants. Also, he looks BA as he is now.
ranter 25th Jun 2011, 5:57 PM edit delete reply

ExarArcian 25th Jun 2011, 6:21 PM edit delete reply
I like how Obfuscobble solved the "issue" with showing details on McCoy. I think it's clear he's still a black raven, but now he's not, well... black. Well done.

Also, really like the idea of the Smithy Invasion being almost Borg-like and what not. I like this version of the Mario Universe more and more.

Woah! I remember that part in Seven Stars! You have done to the Shyster's bouncing what The Shining did to "Red Rum" and "Heeeere's Johnny!". Now I really want to hear them say “Look at him...can't even bounce...maybe we could bounce ON HIS HEAD!!!”.
Just hope that there's a freak thunderstorm at the time.

Also, McCoy says: "I was young..." but he still looks 50.

I'm giving this 5 stars and hoping that this is the start of a great, well-planned story arc that is going to blow us all away.

I am so sick of you people going "Oh, Mushroom Go changed, now it sucks" over and over again!
There are two very effective ways NOT to do that:
1: You deal with it. Morgenstern won't go back, so suck it up!
2: You go away. You won't be able to enjoy Mushroom Go any more, but you also wont annoy those who do.
Pick one.

And on the subject of your second post, I'm not sure about Aeon Flux (My sister got me the boxed set a few years back, but it was too random and snuff-based for my liking), but I think the Geometric Magic(tm) is being saved for when a Magikoopa (or someone trained BY a Magikoopa) shows up.

@Futurevgd: Yeah, what Evdog said! Plants! …with teeth! ...and spider plants! … (Spider Plant! Spider Plant! Does whatever a Spider Plant does!) …oh, and that one daisy in Twister’s Borough. That one is by far the scariest (tongue-in-cheek).

@Sman X: Λ (fan made) McCoy game sounds possible. Morgenstern would have to be writing (or a least supervising) the story of it to be canon. (Does the term “canon” even apply here? I mean, it’s a webcomic about a warped interpretation of the Marioverse. Oh, umm…no offense, Morgenstern.) I don’t know enough about copyrights and trademarks and such to know if it would be legally possible. Maybe permission can be obtained? I don’t really know, I’m just spouting ideas. (That applies to this whole paragraph.)

Would it be too much to hope for a Dimentio appearance?
