Not to start an art war again, but I'm not so sure that I like the white outlines on McCoy. I know that since he's darker now he needs contrast but maybe a gray would be a bit less off putting.

Anyways, I'm glad to finally get some real back story on Guy, the body language reading is pretty badass ^_^

Love it. Guy is probably my favorite character and I am extremely excited to get to read his backstory. My kinda Shy Guy. Most likely due to the fact that he has been, thus far, such an anomaly, given that he doesn't talk. Feel like it might be a short backstory though, I'm sure I'll be proven wrong but still, given that Shy Guys don't talk (I believe, I'm not so heavily entrenched in Mario as I used to be).

EDIT: I am corrected, Shy Guys do talk in various games, most of it in Paper Mario, if I read the wiki page right.

I always theorized that Morg's old art used to look so cute because it was based off of the mario games. In the actual games, ravens were tiny, chubby, and cute, and Morg's version of McCoy, albeit humanoid, still retained a little bit of that, while still looking BA.

This McCoy looks much better than the old one and most of his physique and style you should definitely keep, but maybe, as you draw him, you could experiment with making some of his outer lines, eyes, or plumage a little bit softer.
Ranter 18th Jun 2011, 8:01 PM edit delete reply
Also-- Hey! Now we know what Guy looks like under his mask! Green skin.

Although I do find it a little bit odd that his tribe expressed itself without words OR facial expressions. If you have ever taken sign language, then you probably get what I mean.
Ranter 18th Jun 2011, 8:02 PM edit delete reply

Cassiopia 18th Jun 2011, 8:22 PM edit delete reply
Nice backgrounds.
I always imagined Shyguys (and Shygals) as gender neutral in dress. Neutral expression, neutral sides in the Mushroom/Koopa war, the mask, all add to the mystery.
Guy's my favorite character, and I'd like him to look right. That clothing seems impractical for a jungle setting. Also, Go needs a haircut. And when's the last time you called your mother? Are you taking proper care of yourself? We never talk any more, and another thing... McCoy looks like he has frosted tips. Ok, I'm done. For now.

AnoMoLouS 18th Jun 2011, 9:17 PM edit delete reply
I think whats most off about McCoy is the fact he has a beak now, when we are really used to him having a "blob" mouth/nose whatever. Just kinda offputting
Kris Overstreet 18th Jun 2011, 9:44 PM edit delete reply
Morgenstern: at this point, especially looking at the horrible imbalance in the Shyguy's pose in the last panel, I really do think you are a better artist than Obfuscobble. Honestly.
Xander 18th Jun 2011, 9:47 PM edit delete reply
OK, guys, I have been fairly neutral because, lets face it, I have flame wars. A lot of you are adding fuel to the fire, and that's understandable because of the feelings you have, but can we please tone it down a bit.

OK, onto my own analysis:

Frame 1 - Badass looking McCoy. Though I do agree he seems a little off, the features do fit his supposed physique and style, and I agree, though it is a bit off-putting, the white highlights do help define him.

Frame 2 - To ease some minds, I dont think Go is hugging himself, I think its supposed to be him crossing his arms. Also, he started the story in that costume, so its unknown if his fire power is still running or not. McCoy is still badass.

Frame 3 - Holy shiznit, it's tribal Shy Guys! AWESOME! I always love how these guys are re-imagined, starting with Guy and now this. It not only sets the Tribal tone, but the netting also makes me think ninjas as well, who are supposed to be emotionless and expressionless behind their masks.

Frame 4 - DOOM! I do agree, that does look like a Chomp in the background.

Seriously, I would love to see this chapter through with the current artist before switching things back over, give the guy a better chance at getting things set right in the standards. At the progress he is going, I feel several more people will get used to it and agree that it is better, both in artwork and story.
Delta Pangaea 18th Jun 2011, 9:56 PM edit delete reply
I'm gonna say that Obfuscawhatever (sorry, it's hard to remember) IS getting better at pinning down characters.

My main gripe at this point, is McCoy.

I mean, look at him! he looks so very different now, and looks far more menacing than he should. I think it's partially due to his eyes, and the fact that he has a neck now. The beak and eyebrows are also kind of off-putting.
Haya 18th Jun 2011, 10:09 PM edit delete reply
So the Shyguys are all ninja like . . . and Guy's a sand pirate . . . that makes Guy a ninja pirate . . . BADARSE!

Also I agree that Mccoy is still not looking quite right. I think the eyes and eyebrows affect me the most and the beak a little.

ART: All of it is AMAZING, except for McCoy in the first frame. Shy guy jungle is great.

PLOT: I had a strange thought of Palma dancing non-stop after she was told the news. Don't know why.
...anyway, I don't exactly know where Guy's backstory is going. It could have taken several dozen directions. I really hope this builds up to something that is an awesome use of Chekhov's Gun.

I just want to point this out, to those of you who are critiquing Ob's art. Don't get lost in the ranting and forget why you are saying the things you say. You should be reviewing and desribing Ob's work to help him to make the comic look better, more canon, and more original, not to make him make the art look exactly like Morg's, or to bring him down for doing something he is being paid to do. (And doing pretty well, too, I might add. Especially when you add all the abuse he's gotten in the past weeks to the tab.) I like Morg's art, and although I miss it, I also like and respect Ob's style and ability to not only change his entire tone on a whim, but also to take canon to a whole new level. There are many panels, I've noticed, that I think Morg might not have been able to do justice: so, credit where credit is due, and you must not let the ranting CONTROL you, young ones. Although you should never feel as though you have an opinion you can not share, you must use the ranting for good and positive, constructive comments, and not downright bullying.
Therazan 19th Jun 2011, 12:48 AM edit delete reply
I kinda agree with Ranter here and want to add that i proposed to add a sketchy look to the current art style; then i think it would feel even more like the original Mushroom Go.
Ranter 19th Jun 2011, 12:50 AM edit delete reply
@Delta Pangea

Just call them "Ob" and "Morg". I know I do.

I like his neck...That's one of the changes I actually LIKED...I was just a little bugged at his sudden skinniness and strange eyes...but both of those are still things that actually make sense to me, with him being a raven and all. I agree that the beak is off-putting, but I still very much like the eyebrows.

Go is my least favorite thing about this comic, but the panel of Guy's tribe is my very favorite and makes up for it in my opinion.
Kevin 19th Jun 2011, 1:48 AM edit delete reply
@EKA no that is more then likely one of smithy's creations.

The last two panels are fine. The first two...
Well, I'll give my opinion. McCoy needs more fixing. He is supposed to be a dark bird, and the white outline contrasts too much. Also, he appears to be like 50 years old. That's the impression I got from these panels, with the highly visible gash on his beak and the shading on his mouth and eyebrows. I would highly recommend trying to make him look like he was before the change in comic style. It'd be good to bring the bada** back.

Guy is suposed to be the fastest member of the crew, right? How the heck does he manage that if he's wearing all that chainmail?
I mean he's basically wearing a full-body suit made of it and this stuff is heavy! Believe me I know what I'm talking about, I make chainmail as a hobby and know its weight.
The chainmail-suit Guy is wearing would be at least 10-15 kilogramm and this WOULD slow him down a lot!

Therazan 19th Jun 2011, 11:52 AM edit delete reply
@DemonBlood in every RPG i know chainmail armor is considered as a light armor. Plus i'd say that the weight is distributed on his whole body which makes it easier to bear. Guy is also used to wearing one, which is supposed to make him able to compensate for the additionnal weight easily. Chainmail armor isn't considered to be very rstrictive for an armor.

Well i dont believe it would be a chainmail hehehe it is actually heavy heheh but there would be 2 ways =P

if it is a chainmail so that mean that guy is more veteran, faster and stronger than it seems =P

the other one is that.... well in a lot of drawings there is an special cloth that ninjas wear.... i dont know of what is suppose to be made of, but is meant to be light, thin and help to camouflage the skin with the darkness of the night XDD

*sigh* Well, see, when morgenstern did the art, mccoy looked awesome cause he looked fluffy from the sketchy art and it looked really cool. but I accept that its not going to change, but it just looks horrible now. it should look less realistic and more birdlike. if thats what you meant. if you mean like why I don't like mccoy I just think the obbie art looks bad, and even worse when you know how much BETTER morgenstern's art was. Ranter 19th Jun 2011, 9:58 PM edit delete reply
@ infinity6

Morgenstern chose to hire Ob for a reason, and he's already stated that no matter how we whine, he will not change that decision. If you were only giving Ob constructive critism on specific parts of the art you didn't like, then that would be different, but as you are, you're being incredibly rude.

I will admit that I miss Morg's art though. I think Ob's style is perfect for the comic (now), but I would love it is Morg could make a "sketchbook" section of this site-- he could post on it sporatically to make fun of the current comic, show his versions of the characters, or maybe he could even post something that has nothing to do with the comic at all? I think that would make a lot of people, including myself, and probably even Infinity6, very happy. Especially considering how, for most of us, it's less that Morg has a new artist, and more that we miss Morg's art. I also think, if Morg did that, he might even be able to post on the sketchbook more than once a week, seeing as they wouldn't necissarily have to be complete comics.
Rage-Nakasa 19th Jun 2011, 11:49 PM edit delete reply

I'd be more concerned over the fact that there's a man with a mushroom head who shoots fireballs from his hands. talking ravens and a turtle with a bazooka than the fact that Guy seems completely used to wearing chainmail and it doesn't seem to inhibit his movement.

Still looks like fishnets anyway.

I think that what they are wearing is more like a flexible metal meshed clothe than a chainmail. It would be lighter, flexible and, if made with some of the unknown material from this universe, highly durable.

Good Art, Good story...

On the Guy Chainmail stuff. Can we just say its cause he is a Ninja? The Ninja from Federal Japan also wore Chainmail and they climbed walls and shit. Its all to do with Training. I wore a Chainmail Shirt at a Medieval Fair where one of the Hobby Smiths let me put on his work, it was quite heavy, but even with my strength alone I could easily move about normally. Though because it wasn't made for me, it was uncomfortable.

I'm surprised for someone so vocal on your oppinion of the art that you failed to notice something so evident about it. you can clearly see Go wearing the clothes he has now here and you can also see here that he is using the fireflower while wearing his old outfit. I don't even know why this subject has come up, there's nothing at all indicating that he's still in firemode in this comic.
EKA 21st Jun 2011, 11:14 AM edit delete reply
I'm just going to throw my own two cents on this Firemode debate:

Why would Go change back? I'm pretty sure he didn't get hit, so wouldn't that be kind of a waste of a perfectly good Fire Flower?

why are you so surprised, i was too busy looking at creepyindianbirman.

anyway, i guess i dint really notice it, as it only briefly apperad in morgs art.

but your right, his costume didnt chage for the other ones when using the fireflower.

quick question, why did his costume change? i cant tell if palmahulk's costume chaged, and non of the other characters chaged there costumes.

and by the way, his orange/red/cowboy costume, fits with the firemode very well. thats why i though he might be in firemode.

i digress.

Don't post comments like that, Core. It's annoying as hell.

Different types of Fire Flowers have different properties. Some release their energy at a slow pace and allow the user to throw fireballs until the flow of magical energy through the user's vim points is interrupted by an injury. This is how most of them work in the Super Mario Bros. universe.

Other types will release the energy at a frantic pace. The effect has more power but it runs out after a few seconds. This is how they work in Galaxy. Perhaps this is the kind Go just used.

It's like how some Ice Flowers give Mario the ability to throw ice blasts and others turn Mario himself into Ice. It's all about how the energy reacts with the user's vim.
Morgenstern 21st Jun 2011, 1:44 PM edit delete reply

Go's actually been wearing this outfit since pg76, at the end of the Birdo arc (which featured an entire thing where Go and Palma are clothes shopping... derp). He switches hats between then and the next page, but other than that has kept the same outfit since. Power ups don't change his clothes (at least, none that he's used so far)--the only indicators of a fire flower being used are flaming arms and/or eyes, and the personality change.

Other characters have been switching clothes at least every chapter, sometimes multiple times within a chapter (if a lot of time passes). Like, even McCoy has different colors of pants for different days.

It's one of those funny things where like, someone is literally asking me why a person would change clothes

As of page 81 Obfuscobble has Palma looking pretty much exactly how I had her when I drew her last. It took him a bit to get the exact proportions of it down, but Palma's had larger hands since... well, the Thrive chapter. I.e., continually referencing how TOTALLY HORRENDOUS she looks in every single comment isn't going to change her--I literally looked at page 81 and said "Yes, that's Palma." We're still working out McCoy and Go, but I've been pretty satisfied with Palma, Martello and Guy.

And if I were put into a situation where I have to tail an enemy while holding a casual conversation for an unknown length of time... well, given the sort of changes it makes to Go's personality, I'd turn it off too.

GlaDos, I'd make some snide comment about throwing yourself into that fire, but screw it. I'm just gonna say, with the spelling and sentence structure you use, you have no right to call anyone braindamaged. Parts of your posts don't even make sense. And don't gimme that personality core crap, if you can't type well, you can still use words in a coherent order.

Demonblood, I arrived a bit late for the chainmail discussion, but I'd just like to add, how do Superman and the Flash snatch people from under a falling building or out of a bullets path without tearing them apart from windshear? It's comic book physics.

Regarding the new McCoy look, I think I figured this out. He looks more like a mentoring figure this way, and not so much a badass for the sake of being badass.

obivously you havent played portal.

the commen about brain damage is a sommwhat, downgrading compliment used by wheatly.

he thought she was braindamaged, but she always tricked him

hey man, my best friend is adopted, (and a little overweight) :-)
i am also very opinionated. only difference is i know a webcomic is not the place to be arguing about, say, chainmail or the characters outfits. Also, your forest seems to be missing quite a few trees. are you sure it could sustain a fire?

"The complainer is always wrong."

Argh! That's the trope I was trying to think of! The one that had so much applicability in weeks past when I was still leading the anti-obfuscobble crusade! All the wasted potential...

@ Glados's comic core

No one will care about your portal references unless you spell them correctly. in fact, as someone who likes Portal-- your references pretty much burn my eyes. You aren't doing the game justice. It's simple, after you type a post and before you submit it, look it over for missing words or commas. Another thing you could use is an online spell check, such as this:
Bonz0 21st Jun 2011, 11:10 PM edit delete reply
This is a MARIO comic and nobody even gets my references to Mario RPGS. Your Portal references are lost on us.

Do what Ranter said or just use Firefox like me.
tutter 22nd Jun 2011, 12:05 AM edit delete reply
Dang it Bonzo, now I got to read all these comments for your Mario RPG reference. LOVE that game.

edit: btw, morgenstern, nice job changing the credits footer. I love that your actually doing that. If it were me and I was in the same situation, I'd probably not have realized till... like page 175.
Bonz0 22nd Jun 2011, 12:50 AM edit delete reply
What? No. RPGS. With an "S". As in, ALL Mario RPG games. Super Mario RPG and Super Paper Mario are the only ones out of the 7 I haven't played and therefore the ones I cannot make references to.

I WOULD go buy SMRPG:Legend of the Seven Stars if not for the fact that the plot has pretty much been ruined for me thanks to cultural osmosis (SMBZ, anyone?) and it's not like the gameplay is anything I haven't seen before.

Similarly, I have not felt the need to buy SPM because most of the praise for the game seems to be focused on the plot, characters and humor rather than the gameplay.

I'll just wait for Paper Mario 3D for my Mario RPG goodness. In fact I think I'll go watch the trailer on my 3DS right now. For the severalth time.

But the new art style... just does not suit me... At least let the new artist update McCoy's look. He looks really fucking weird.
the comment is back 22nd Jun 2011, 3:11 AM edit delete reply
can the old art come back please?
I meen the new art is nice but only for bone comics. (google it if your not sure.) but changing how a character is drawn or canging the style is wrong, i meen martello was a awesome looker and palmer was cute in a nerdy sort of way, macoy was well bad ass and funny looking, (not easy to do by the way.) and go looked yong and mysteryes (i am aware of spelling mistacs.) so please o merceyfull cartoonest bring back the old style because the new aint all that great. (plus the up date rate sucks.)
guy is still awesome.
Bonz0 22nd Jun 2011, 3:59 AM edit delete reply
I don't get it. If you are aware of spelling mistakes why not fix them?
Morgenstern 22nd Jun 2011, 5:01 AM edit delete reply
The current update rate is going to be the same no matter who draws the comic
DemonBlood 22nd Jun 2011, 7:11 AM edit delete reply
This crappy spelling...

Haya 22nd Jun 2011, 7:39 AM edit delete reply
I find people who think that they can waltz into places and demand everything be the way they want absolutely hillarious. It's even more so if they're illiterate.

Also I don't think this person with the vague name is the GLaDOS guy, the spelling is far worse. I may be mistaken however.
DancesWithChihuahuas 22nd Jun 2011, 11:15 AM edit delete reply
Ugh, it hurts reading those Glados and "the comment is back" comments. You just know the kid behind them is, well I dunno, I suppose we could make ballpark guesses at his age, but what would be the point?

I think the most offputting thing about McCoy is the beak, to me, possibly the eyes as well. Traditionally ravens have round beaks to accentuate their silly look, and without that it throws me off a bit. It's not that McCoy looks bad, just different from what I'm used to. I'll get used to it in time, I'm sure.
Cassiopia 22nd Jun 2011, 2:13 PM edit delete reply
Morgenstern! -Glomps-
If Obby's art continues to improve at the rate it has been, I'm totally on board with his staying. Hell, Bonz0's warming to him. McCoy needs his rounded beak and orange eyebrows back, though.
also, this comic needs a forum. These comments are getting ridiculous.

Hello, I apologize for any offense I might have caused, and my name does end in 6, just to clear up confusion*. I have nothing I can think of to say, so I will say that this comic is awesome no matter the art style and I will always read this comic because it is awesome. I it is very fun and I approve of any expansion, like morgenstern sketchbooks*.

Yay For Acceptance! Did anyone else notice that all the female shy guys have exposed necks? Unless they're albino, it seems that the "mask" is their face.
Therazan 23rd Jun 2011, 5:19 PM edit delete reply
@tutter not really you can see the strap holding the mask on their head. Notice also how the masks is over the fabric of their hood in certin instances (the orange one in front in the 3rd pannel is a good example). But their skin is clearly white.
Bonz0 23rd Jun 2011, 7:14 PM edit delete reply
So, about that monster in the last panel...

I can't be the only person who thought it was a giant phanto before reading the "robot" part.
tutter 23rd Jun 2011, 7:31 PM edit delete reply
Don't worry Therazan, I noticed. I just felt like saying something partially true and then hoping no one would check to see if all of it was true.

@bonzo: it kind of looks like a green robot boo to me.... But we'll just have to wait another day to see what it is. I can;t wait.

Also: This may be random, but I may have an Idea for the McCoy issue: Do what Animes do. Make his highlight blue instead of white.
