This was edited on a laptop from a hotel lobby, so...

YEAH, sorry if something's totally goofy. I'll likely go back and revise this later.

Currently at A-Kon! Let me know if anybody else is here, I'd love to meet a few readers (though I can't check comments very often due to that whole hotel lobby thing, so... er... we'll see)

Well, I'll miss the old style, but this does look pretty good.

It does feel weird, though.

I thought the point of the mask was to hide Guy's face. Granted it's barely a glimpse but still. It sorta messes up the feel of the character, even if just a bit.

Diggin' the new art. I'll miss the old stuff, but this is still great. What do you guys use to draw and color this? Is it Photoshop or something else?
Arrakis 11th Jun 2011, 8:04 PM edit delete reply
Go was going to kill the bob-omb with fire... He may be immune to his own fire but would an explosion not of his fire but only triggered by his fire count?
Hobojoe007 11th Jun 2011, 8:13 PM edit delete reply
Oh so Guy has some problems with bob-ombs... Interesting, looks like this arc will be focusing on Guy's back story. I'm really curious to find out. It would be hilarious and interesting if he came from Yoshi Island, haha.

Go still looks out of character, he is much taller than he used to be. he has strange pants too (they used to be loose and baggy) Martello looks perfect, this is the best I've seen obfuscobble draw her. I cant get used to seeing guy's eye. as a shy guy, I think he should retain the empty holes, they add to his mysteriousness and vacancy.
Eternity Everest 11th Jun 2011, 8:15 PM edit delete reply
I agree with one o' the above. This'll feel weird.
But that's fine. I'll miss the old style too, in its somewhat unapologetic roughness. But I came for the story first, art second. I'm fine with whatever you decide, Herr Artist.
Still love the comic.

Ofuscabobble (or however you spell it) is definitely improving on getting the characters down, but Go still looks... off.

Too tall and gangly I think... Plus he looks a tad... malicious in that panel. I dunno if it's intentional, but... yeah.

When was Guy's eye shown before? I didn't see it the last time it was pointed out (about one comic ago), And I don't see it in this- unholy mother of exposition! It IS there!!!

PS I'm not being sarcastic, this truly and utterly shocked me! It's not something to be negative about, but it certainly is surprising.

Go usually goes a little nuts when he's using a fire flower right?
Ranter 12th Jun 2011, 1:44 AM edit delete reply
The last panel was the very best. Absolutely. I see NOTHING wrong with it.
The first panel is okay... I feel like Go should look a little shorter-- being a toad--as it is, he looks pretty skinny. Although everything else in the first panel is perfect; I love the fire, the bob-omb, and background.
Ob's style of Martello has REALLY improved-- the messy hair, the slouch of her posture, and the muscles in her arm are all perfectly in character. However, while the gritty tone and cartoonish art has party returned and really improved, some aspects have not. For example, there is something off about that helmet and the position of her hand...

:) I don't think I got to comment on how much I LOVE Guy and Palma's design. Both are wonderful, even more so for guy in this new comic.
Ranter 12th Jun 2011, 1:53 AM edit delete reply
I would also like to comment on how, although I love Morgensern's art, it seems to me he an express himself more easily with a hired artist and more detailed art.

I've been mostly leaning toward wanting Morg to go back to drawing, in the past, but Ob is a good artist as proven by his ability to change his style with the attitude of the writing, and he just makes it seem as though he is so COMFORTABLE with this comic. With his art, he is able to express things that Morg likely always wanted to express, but just couldn't with his current ability. I think that did limit Morg in ways that-- without knowledge of the inner workings of Morg's mind, as we fans were--we couldn't see, before.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
Ranter 12th Jun 2011, 2:10 AM edit delete reply
In closing, every comic Ob's drawn has been slightly different as he tries out different styles for Mushroom Go. Here is how I rank each page, if it helps at all. On a scale of most favorite to least...

First off...SO wish I got to go to A-kon, would have loved to meet the man behind the scenes but I digress. Second: I know the art card is overused and burnt to a cinder, but I'm glad you've stuck to your guns despite what comments come up. Nothing really wrong with one style or another they are just different from each other which takes time to adjust. Third: O.O Guy Eye, last panel! Its not a Myth!
Corvianking 12th Jun 2011, 2:54 AM edit delete reply
I have to say that while the new art style is growing on me I don't really like that Guy's face is being shown. His entire character really gets pulled together by the mask. Showing the face behind it just feels wrong to me.

Yanno, this page here kinda is starting to make the whole style grow on me a little more. I'm glad, like Sman X, that you've stuck to your guns regardless of the hostile comments and kind suggestions to return to your style. A few more pages, and I think I'll be won over completely to this new art.

Also, why the fuss over Guy's eye? I think it's a really cool touch. You're only seeing his eye, and did you NOT expect a humanish figure behind the mask? All other Mario characters have been reworked for this comic, so I think it's great to see Morgenstern breaking canon even more by allowing Guy's one single eye to be shown. To me, it adds more to the mysteriousness rather than detract from it. I mean, you see just his eye. You have to wonder what his whole face looks like. Especially if his mask is scarred the way it is.
Evdog 12th Jun 2011, 4:28 AM edit delete reply
Unless this is a trap for the Chainless to fall into, whoever programmed that Bob-omb was a complete fool. Why in the world would you get a unit to walk back to your home base? All it does is allows the enemy to do exactly what Martello has just planned. You might save one or two units in a battle this way, but it's just not worth the risk.

"Then fire the guys that made those robots, and build better robots."

As any good nintendo gamer will attest to, graphics don't matter, gameplay does. Er, storytelling, in this case. I'd hate to see flash replace depth. For some reason, seeing Go flaming in awesomeness actually subtracts from his character. If he's BA and has it all figured out, there goes the main character.

. . . Okay, still not seeing Shyguy's eye. Though going back to look for it, I noticed he was using McCoy as a shield when he first met the pink bob-ombs; fear is adorable!

Morgenstern 12th Jun 2011, 11:54 PM edit delete reply
I think people are missing that Go's being a really bad ass distraction

Like, he's not totally failing at it or anything, but all he really did was screw up some sensors while Palma did the heavy lifting. He's allowed to succeed at small stuff. He's not Dan Hibiki or anything, he's just not very competent. Or brave. ... Forgot where I was going with this

Edit: to death
tutter 13th Jun 2011, 2:20 AM edit delete reply
Plus, from the two transforms/powerups we've seen, his personality seems to drastically change depending on the item. Didn't Martello or Mccoy state that they realized something was wrong/different when Go first used the fire flower? So if he gets bad @$$ or a bit more violent then more power(up) to him... until he accidentally runs into a goomba.

edit: fool hardy recklessness seems to also be part of the package. btw, is the belt new? I'm too lazy to go and check but I don't ever remember seeing him with a belt of any kind before.

Muchacho NL 16th Jun 2011, 2:38 AM edit delete reply

More people than you would want to know of.
Most likely it'll be Palma and Martello together.
NotJoe 16th Jun 2011, 8:58 AM edit delete reply
I bet it was Pinstripe.
DtC 16th Jun 2011, 3:31 PM edit delete reply
I just read your whole comic library! More, more!
tutter 16th Jun 2011, 6:28 PM edit delete reply
I agree.

The only reason I don't beleive the "rough draft" isn't real is because Obfuscobble doesn't sound very Japanese, his art style isn't Japanese anime either, and that had a very strong Nihon appearence using romanized katakana like it did.
flawdaboy121 16th Jun 2011, 7:03 PM edit delete reply
So i'm wondering about that comment you posted, where you were talking about your artwork being more important than obfuscobble's, and i was also crying a little because i miss your art, when i thought to myself, "wait a minute, is morgenstern still paying that other guy to do artwork, and if so why?"
So: are you still paying that other guy to do artwork, and if so, why?
NotJoe 16th Jun 2011, 10:29 PM edit delete reply
He's paying Obfuscobble because most of the fanbase was fine with the switch.
Ranter 17th Jun 2011, 12:05 AM edit delete reply
Most of the fanbase was NOT fine with the switch; the reason Morgenstern made the switch was because it was his decision to make.
DemonBlood 17th Jun 2011, 6:50 AM edit delete reply

We were not okay with it 'cause it was sudden and, taking that first Martello into account, painfull.
But now, as I see it, most of us are okay with it, some even like it better than the old art.
And that might not be the reason why the switch first happend, but it is the reason why the art stays.
NotJoe 17th Jun 2011, 8:03 AM edit delete reply
From what it sounded like, Morgenstern was very close to getting rid of Obfuscobble because of how much we whined, until of course he changed his art style to match Morgenstern's. Then it was only a few people disagreeing with the switch.

@ Aikidoka: Pokemon Type Wild... amazing. Just wish I could actually download it, but Hughesnet is full of lies and deceit.

THEY SAY YOU CAN DOWNLOAD ANYTHING IN MILLISECONDS, BUT IT TAKES FOREEVVVVVEEERRR. And for some unfathomable reason, playing the pre-installed Minesweeper game will crash the Interwebz.

@ Ranter: DemonBlood is right. I actually despised Obbie's art at first, but it's grown on me. Don't like it better than the old art, but I love it nonetheless.

Yay! Morgenstern changed the copyright bar-thingy! My incessant need for total correctness is overwhelming, and, at times, annoying!
drakvl 17th Jun 2011, 11:33 AM edit delete reply
Re the "draft": and then there's the fact that a comic that's fated to be colored probably wouldn't be shaded in gray-scale.
EKA 17th Jun 2011, 12:37 PM edit delete reply
Y'know, I think we may be missing the very important conversation of what Martello, Palma, and Guy are planning on doing with the leftovers of a laser firing robot...

@tutter: What are romanized katakana?
Are you referring to Romaji translated from katakana, or katakana drawn in a more roman style?
GlaDos's Comic Cube 17th Jun 2011, 6:17 PM edit delete reply

You are completly right. But most people gave in when the secound comic came out and either
1. Stayed and liked it
2.Left and hated
3.Hated it but grew to like it
4. Still Hate it and wish it was back to the old style
5. Liked it and adapted to it.

@Not Joe

it may look "Better" and not look like Pretty Princess MArtello, and other calamites( Like The Palma Hulk in the last 2 comics and creepy birdman)and it slowly is getting better, but it still will never replace Morgenstern's art.

Emough with the HATER/RANTEr thing.

Never say that again, or i will send live Frankenturrets to you house.

With rocket turrets attach to the top of the cube.

He Aperture science Enrichment center will warn you of any dangerous testing envirments.Such as, saying things like that will kill you. Try to avoid it.

Lets see here, we've got fire all around, and in Go's hands, and the bobomb practically right between Go's legs, fuse just begging to be lit. He's just asking for it.

On a different note, I wonder what's up with guy and boboms?
Futurevgd 17th Jun 2011, 8:56 PM edit delete reply
why do people keep talking about the art?
It's over, move on. On a completley different note i remembered my password. :)

I honestly don't think that very many people will stop talking about the art so I'm going to as well. I think that it could work out, but definitely need some morgenstern work SOMETIMES. at least. so yeah, there's my opinion, by a random guy no one knows!
Bonz0 17th Jun 2011, 10:13 PM edit delete reply
I agree, Infinity. I'm not going to complain or anything but it would be cool to get one Morgenstern comic a month or something. Just so we can see exactly how Morgenstern draws a certain character or setting. It would probably help Obfuscobble as well since he's trying to emulate Morgenstern's style now.
infinity6 18th Jun 2011, 11:13 AM edit delete reply
Yes, exactly!

I thought you were going to leave, Comic Cube.
RADDman 18th Jun 2011, 2:08 PM edit delete reply
Okay, I think I'm really missing something here. What's the fuss over people seeing Guy's eye? I keep looking at his eye holes in the last panel, and I only see the usual blackness :/
EKA 18th Jun 2011, 2:16 PM edit delete reply
Morgenstern had the eye edited out.
Pinstripe 18th Jun 2011, 3:31 PM edit delete reply
RADDman, you just aren't looking close enough. Look closer!
Shinichi 21st Jun 2011, 3:35 PM edit delete reply
Dang it, I always miss the eye. T.T I kinda want to see what it looks like now that everyone's making such a big fuss over it... it driving me insane. :P

But I really do like Obb's art-style. It's fancy. I liked the roughness of Morgenstern's just as much, but I've grown to enjoy this artstyle. Mushroom Go is quickly becoming one of my favorite webcomics. ^.^
