This is another one of those pages that started off totally different in my head, but completely changed by the time I was done with it. For better or worse, I couldn't tell you.

Whole chapter's kinda been like that, though. There's been alot of moments that I didn't realize the full gravity of until I reached them--actions current that sync up far too well with bigger things I'd had planned for later. I think this whole thing is going to be alot more relevant to the overarcing plot than I really thought it was going to be, which is pretty neat.

Let it be known that I did fight myself a bit over how I was going to end this chapter. Originally, I was like "Plan A, period." After reading comments and reactions, I was like "Plan B then, I guess." But after some deliberation, it turned into some sort of weird Plan A-2. Long story short, I have debated the repercussions behind all this, and I do realize alot of the implications--many of which are part of the massive series of setups I keep eluding to. There's alot of little things, good and bad, that are all building in the background here.

I expect some people to get upset, both immediately and later.

Sorry if I sound a little vague/over-dramatic/totally out of it. My sleep schedule has gone right down the pooper.

That's..... Kinda not cool. I've read this from the start with no real need to comment at all until now. It's been a great ride so far. Kinda light and kinda heavy at the same time. I mean with what they had to do to Thrive? Thrive was ready and prepared to go on a genocidal rampage of most everything non-plant if he got his way. Thrive was a monster, hands down, in every sense of the word. He had to be taken down completely, not just to save their own necks but that of their entire world. But Chief Birdo? He's a goon. Small-time and smaller potatoes with aspirations that were a bit unrealistic for one of his 'station' for lack of a better term. Lynching him mighta been just a bit of an excessive over-reaction.... don't you think? Knowing and seeing what Martello is capable of, we all know that there were dozens of other ways they could've taken him down without completely taking him out. Bad form Captain, bad form.

Oh relax! Did you SEE how much neck muscle is on that guy? I mean SERIOUSLY? I highly doubt that they just blatantly killed the Birdo guy. Probably just yanked him up hard enough to send him over the rafter and through the roof or something crazy like that. Like... 'Team Birdo is blasting off again!' style. The fight has been pretty funny just like he said it would and that would just be hysterical. I mean c'mon! Perfect reoccurring villain here! Comedic relief! Good update. Let it ride.

Even if I saw it coming, I'm still somewhat shocked at Birdo's lynching. Then again (as said or implied by others), we don't have any real evidence Birdo is dead yet. It is possible that the rope will slip and Birdo will just be yanked into the air by her neck (or his neck, if you prefer) and then fall back down, which may not be fatal. But what do I know.

@Guest: Just because Thrive was a mad man (er...mad plant) with power, that doesn't make Birdo any less guilty of crimes. If you go back to the bar fight, you can see the customers scared out of their wits. For all we know, Birdo is a murderous gang leader who is wanted dead (maybe even with an old west style poster "Wanted: DEΛD"). Besides, we already knew this was going to happen. Martello herself said she was going to enjoy killing Birdo, and I doubt pirates make idle threats. She is also drunk, and I doubt you think past the moment when drunk (I don't drink, so this is just a guess).

Hmm... I wonder how the sheriff is going to react to all this. I had some thoughts, but I didn't take murder (or at least an attempted one) into account.

Considering Birdo was basically planning on making and distributing a snuff film involving the crew, i'm gonna have to rule self defense on this one. Thrive was designed to be a weapon. He was a little far gone to save, but you could have a bit of sympathy for him, or at least Palma could. Birdo's just a nasty piece of work. Plus, I doubt the final battle is going to be this anticlimactic.
That said, Morg, I hope you aren't going to make your homosexual characters all villains. That sort of thing makes me sad :(

@ Bonz0 Oh, no not this debate again. Kill it! Kill it with fire!
As to the comic, Go's gonna be scarred. It's strange how lynching isn't necessarily as gory as other deaths can be, but it still makes the mind cringe at the horrendous thought (or in Go's case, sight) of it.

For some reason killing some guy in a bar fight, especially accidentally, seems less objectionable than stealth-lynching somebody from behind. I mean, she could have KO'd the guy/girl with the hammer and left them for the sheriff, or something.

Good day to you too.

Also, the "heroes" of this series are pirates, criminals by definition, and this comic isn't about saving the world from evil, it is about their life as pirate, so a few mishaps can happen along the road. I don't mean that they are evil or that their action won't do anything good for the world(they did save the world after all), only that in their positions they don't have as many choices as more conventional heroes have and extreme actions may sometime be needed. It is part of their life as pirates.
Bonz0 24th Apr 2011, 7:51 PM edit delete reply
Bonz0
@Snerky
Killing some guy accidentally? That's not what I was referring to. I was talking about the time Guy stabbed a goomba mobster and killed him. That wasn't an accident, that was a choice Guy made in order to save Martello's life.

Sure, they could have Birdo locked up, but then he's just going to seek revenge and cause more trouble for the crew.

Remember, the reason Birdo wants to kill the Chainless rather than lock them up and collect bounty money is because he knows that THEY will eventually seek revenge. By killing any member of the Birdo gang they are acting in self defense.

Also, Birdo made fun of Martello's face. And that's just terrible.

@S.O.U.P

What debate? I didn't say anything about any of the character's genders. I was merely pointing out that we have no idea whether any of the villains are homosexual. Not even Birdo, regardless of what GENDER you think he or she is, we don't really have ANY clues as to what his or her sexuality is.

@Delta Pangea
I was under the impression that she was the physically strongest of the group. McCoy and Guy are precision fighters who rely on skill rather than strength. Go is inexperienced and untrained. Martello seems to be more of a weapon user whereas Palma only has her fists to fall back on. Plus, Piantas are naturally much stronger than Koopas. Even a well trained Koopa soldier probably couldn't take on the average Pianta. Not once in the entire history of Mario do I remember a Koopa picking up and throwing Mario around like a ragdoll.

@Bonzo Haze was definitely hitting on Guy back on page 68.
(I don't wan't to get into the "Guy is a girl" debate either, but even if he is, there's no way for Haze to know that)
All of this is speculation on my part, though. Only Word of Morgenstern would settle it for sure.
Bonz0 24th Apr 2011, 10:18 PM edit delete reply

I can see how one might see Haze's words on that page as him flirting with Guy, but this could just be how Haze acts during a fight. He acted in a similarly nonchalant way in his fight with Martello. I think he just likes to tease and distract his opponent. The entire Dayzee race seems to be very playful even when they're in serious fights.

Bonz0 25th Apr 2011, 12:33 AM edit delete reply
Bonz0
Since Guy never speaks, he probably never bothered to tell the rest of the Chainless his name or even write it down. "Guy" is probably just a nickname they came up with that references his species.
Metal D. Rose 25th Apr 2011, 12:41 AM edit delete reply
Metal D. Rose
Hm. That's true. But consider the fact that before random girls were all over Guy (and McCoy) and since it's hinted that Birdo's team is gay (I mean gay as homosexual, not stupid) and it was shown that Haze flirted with Guy, it's not a good chance that Guy is a girl.
