Birdo, as described in the original first edition manual:

GupyF 17th Apr 2011, 5:56 AM edit delete reply
Well, I'd really hate to say this as well but gender is an abstract concept derived from humanities need to put things in boxes. Dunno if you've ever met a Trans-gender person before but the appropriate response to call them by is their psychological gender and not their Physical sex. So even if Birdo is physically a "He", "she" would still be the proper term for describing her.

So there, Did I successfully force enough PA know-how to stop this debate before it gets out of hand? haha XD

I gotta say...That looks like it hurt...Poor Go. XO

Birdo is a guy in the Japan versions.
Vivian is a guy in the Japan versions.
This was changed in the US versions.
...and I hope this doesn't turn into a mini-war.
That can happen with Birdo gender arguments.

@ Aeoles and everyone else, okay, so I'll start by saying, as with most video game disputes, that both sides have ample reason for their interpretations (in this case on Birdo's gender),and everyone is entitled to their own personal thoughts on the matter. Whether some trivial thing has an official status or not, it is what the individual player gets out of a story or plot point that matters, so we should all just get over this, "I'm right, you're wrong," mentality that creates such rifts in gamer culture.

Pics or in didn't happen.
Look guys, the original Japanese version of the game Birdo first appeared in was called Doki Doki Panic. The game was reskinned with Mario Characters for the US. What does that mean? The Original "Mario game" that Birdo appeared in WAS the the US version. In the instruction booklet that came with the game it says that Birdo is a BOY. All the characters in Mushroom Go are based off the original Mario game that they appeared in. There for Birdo is a Guy, or more appropriate, a Transvestite. Want proof? Links are below:

You know i may think by the proofs that birdo is a boy with some sexual identity issues, thing that actually I don't care . . . . but the thing that concern me now its about YOSHI I mean in a lot of multiplayer games he appear like somehow related with Birdo and sometimes as a couple or so... All the time I thought that he was . . . well... HE, =P

Even with the egg throwing/hatching stuff . . . .

I think it is better to not think about some sexual terms with all of this characters hehehehe

May there are more than one Birdo's race out there like yoshi, and we simple don't get it XDD

Anyway Great comic and hoping you getting better ^^

@every body If Martello didn't know what gender birdo was, she would have called her an "it".

@Sangheili If I am correct, Birdo is kind of a reptile. And reptiles don't nurse their young. Q E D, even if her body is based on a human, she still wouldn't have breasts, Also, LOTS of body building could explain her thick torso. (I guess that could also explain being flat chested....)

I'd just like to agree with Bonzo that REGARDLESS of what the Nintendo Birdo is or is not, there is most likely a SPECIES of them, and assuming they follow the standard male/female thing that we're all familiar with, this one is EITHER a dude or a guy. At any rate, it goes by a "she" pronoun, so call a spade a spade and BE FREE.

Likewise, Meowmix I hadn't even though of that as so many images still show reptilian humanoids as endowed... so I say A+ to you.

I believe that Birdo is an unknown species that moves beyond the realm of genders and is replaced by something else. Who knows? Maybe there are three different genders of birdo? Or FOUR!!!!!!! Sure looks like a dude to me, though.

Well...the egg shooting definitely wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Regarding the Birdo gender debate, I just thought of another explanation. Perhaps Birdos (species) can CHΛNGE their gender. There are definitely fish that do this today in the real world (probably other things too, but I'm absolutely sure some fish do it). Why, at times, Birdo seems to be one gender and actually is the other could be because of the time it takes to change genders (it may be possible in the real world, but I doubt it happens over night). (For those of you who want to know, I think it was some kind of parrot fish that can change its gender.)

Λnd……cue the sheriff!

According to canon Birdo is either a female or a transvestite. Idk for you, but for me, both are supposed to be called SHE. The reason why there is so much controversy is probably because no one ever volunteered to check and ascertain which one it was.

Just wanted to comment on how this comic oozes ten layers of F*****' HOSTILE AWESOME, even just seventy-one posts in. An extra ten Internets to you for originality (as far as I know), managing a serious comic based on the Mushroom Kingdom -- I tend to read a bunch of webcomics lately, and I've yet to see any of them treat them with this same sense of maturity and development, as well as a great art style to compliment the plot.

All I can say is, keep it the hell up, yo, this comic is more promising than any first time run through of any first party Nintendo game.

The first thing I saw this comic, was not Fat Go, but rather the enormous amount of gold in that box. Honestly, has anyone in Mario ever heard of a safe? Maybe Birdo and his/her/it's transgendered crew wouldn't need to kill Martello for the cash if they stored their money away from where anyone could get it...
BlueMario 18th Apr 2011, 4:37 PM edit delete reply
Yes, as a matter of fact, the manual DOES state that Birdo's a guy, but it ALSO interchanges the names of Birdo and Ostro, calling Birdo (the pink thing) Ostro, and calling Ostro (the ridable osterige) Birdo.

So it can actually be interperated either way, HOWEVER in later games, Birdo's gender is either never mentioning, or is called female (I don't remember which), and is also paired up with Yoshi, who is know to be male.

So the count is:
.5 to Male
1.5 to female

@Becker: While safes do exist (Bowser has one in his treasure room in MARIO & LUIGI™ Bowser’s Inside Story), there are many reasons why the Birdo gang wouldn’t have one. I can’t tell you them without going on a rant though.

Myself, I don't care for the debate. Birdo (or as I prefer to call him, Ostro) will always be male for me. I grew up with the original NES games, and in the SMB 2 manual, it calls Ostro male. But guess what? Times change and so do characters. Peach was originally Princess Toadstool in the American port, but now she's Peach across the globe. Get over it people, and let's move onto something more important to debate.

Aside from this one (and a few other particular strips where I had off days, but they're few and far between), I didn't really think my pages contained less content than... well, any standard webcomic page.

Actually, I can dig up a few critiques from people a few months ago telling me I had too much text/too many panels/comics were too long. I dunno, man.

Edit: I think the "shut up" approach might be a bit harsh, lol. It's just one of those things where the subjectiveness of it makes it hard to please everybody (see also: sketchy vs inked). I just do what works best for me--it's hard to consistently pump out five or six panels twice a week, but three to four panels is alright. I still throw out the occassional five-to-six paneler--today's, in fact, is looking to be bigger than normal.

I don't really think we need to tear the guy apart, though. I can see where he's coming from, as this chapter was a little less on the ball about slipping the plot in between the sections of the fight (compared to the first chapter, where things were more integrated).

Like I said, this page in particular was practically filler, as I was sick at the time and rushing just to not miss an update.

Edit: And nah, page 72 will be up on time. It'll be a good four or five hours, assuming I don't get distracted (which is very likely)--in which case, I'll be posting it sometime after noon. It will DEFINITELY be up today, though.

Hokay then, time to weigh in my OBVIOUSLY considerable intellect.

Birdo's name may not even BE Birdo. At least not originally.

In the credits of Super Mario Brothers 2, when all the enemies are named, Birdo is actually the name of the pink flamingos. I forget what 'birdo' was named, but yeah.

Check it if you don't believe me.
