I sometimes remember--with something resembling fondness--when I could approach a potentially late comic with the attitude of "Ahh, whatever" and live guilt free.

And while I'm glad that my drive and level of seriousness involved with the comic has increased since then, I really wish (at this exact moment in time, at least) that I didn't feel somehow determined, nay, obligated to stay up until like 8:30 finishing this sucker.

I am so tired right now. Goin' to bed.

I got a little creative with trying to make it look like night time, also with compromising on the ink/sketch issue. By creative, I mean probably stupid looking. I'll deal with the fallout in the morning. Also, any other problems = totally blaming it on sleeplessness.

FIRST! Naw, but seriously. I am excited to finally see Guy and McCoy in action!

So a couple of known criminals are trying to beat up another couple of known criminals...and the Sheriff isn't cashing in on the opportunity to take out all of them?

No wonder Birdo is having so much success in Twister.

I knew that there would be actions with McCoy/Guy and the girls, but i didn't think abouot that!

Love the Toad's "Look out!"

And that mouse is dumb.

Hey, I just had a thought that requires me to ask: Morgenstern, have you ever seen The Brothers Mario on Youtube and, if so, did it inspire anything in this comic? If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. It's a GTA IV machinima based on Mario in a gritty crime-world setting.
P.S.- Is it just me or is the Crazee Daizee dude hitting on Guy?
Cassiopia 6th Apr 2011, 10:12 AM edit delete reply
so, should i put all of Birdo's gang under Gayngster?

Hmm... I think I'd be ok with Haze joining the crew of The Chainless. A token flower on board is a recipe for hilarity!

Where do I begin? Awesome update, Morgenstern! I love the "I'm way drunker then I thought I was." and the "Man, one of them's not even a girl!" and the toad saying "Watch out!"

.......YOU.....YOU.......It's Navi! I just realized that the toad is frickin' NAVI! Sayin' Hey, Look, Listen, WATCHOUT! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

Also, @movethearmchair, *slaps* we don't want a gay person hitting on guy all the time! You can see how uncomfortable he is! And besides, he's creepy.

Who said Haze is gay? I think he just likes to tease people. And besides, Guy is hilarious when put into uncomfortable situations!

When was it confirmed that the blonde with the headband is a toad?

I just thought of an awesome prank that probably won't happen. Hypothetically, let's say that Palma sleeps through the whole thing. The entire event. Somebody moves her to a bedroom (preferably her own) and puts her in the bed. Then have them arrange the sheets so that when Palma wakes up, it looks like somebody else was in the bed and had already left. Then when she gets out of the room, have McCoy standing there and have him say something that heavily hints that she and Go had slept together. That would freak her out. The more I type, the better it looks. Probably won't happen, but just imagine the look on her face if it did!
Spinnerlink 6th Apr 2011, 2:20 PM edit delete reply
@Mr. Vareel

That does sound realy funny but i don't think the crew would do such a mean prank like that. it would be realy funny if she wakes up after all the fighting and dosen't relize what happened. also ge a acount and subscribe to mushroom go!

I was going to say that the GuyxHaze shippers went crazee but, yeah, that's already been done. Love the comic and can't wait for the next one, though I freaked out with the blurry 'focus' text boxes, though my comp was finally going insane and about to shoot itself in the head.

@Mr. Vareel
I don't remember when exactly but it was confirmed maybe right when she first appeared that she was a toad because she has the toad bandanna, though worn in an unconventional way.
Therazan 6th Apr 2011, 4:31 PM edit delete reply
It was confirmed on the page where she appered 1st.

and as for the prank with Palma, I think would love too, but say he's too mature for that anyways. besides, i think Martello woud forbid that kind of things in order to keep her crew united or something

I don't think Haze is hitting on Guy(not in a emotional way, because he is trying to hit him with is fist). I think Haze is the kind of person that search beauty in all things, like Zhang He in dynasty warrior. The way Haze speak to Guy remind of a thing Zhang He said in one of the game(which one I don't remember).
movethearmchair 6th Apr 2011, 7:05 PM edit delete reply

Thank you! That's exactly what I was thinking today too! That being said, Zhang He waaas pretty gay... lol. I mean, c'mon, butterfly wings? Ridiculous.

It's possible the yellow female could be a Noki, but I would bet on a Toad due to the headband.

Something deep in my gut is telling me that Guy is either considering sporting the goatee look, planning on ripping the goatee off that Dayzee, or both.

@ Spinnerlink- the crew DID get Guy to attack Go with a chainsaw, so... I don't think they would be above fooling Palma like that.
Completely unrelated, but i'm the guy that posted the super candy thing... it'd been forever since i'd seen Bowser's Kingdom.

Grimlock13 6th Apr 2011, 8:40 PM edit delete reply
Those people that are like Zhang He usually think that beauty is genderless and without any limit. It's not uncommon for them to wear eccentric outfit simply because they think it's beautiful. That doesn't mean they are gay, they only have a different fashion sense.
Freezie43110 6th Apr 2011, 8:41 PM edit delete reply
The funny thing about Guy's "speech" is that for all we know those dots are actually a blasphemous insult. Or maybe Guy's just asking McCoy what he wants for dinner after the fight?

First of all, I did not make the "Steve" comment this time (not that I was accused, but I made the first one). Second of all, if the blonde is a Toad, shouldn't she be wearing a (mushroom) cap? The only reason Go doesn't wear one is because it was forcibly taken from him, and I know that Palma says (in one of the early comics) that Toads never take off their cap if they can help it. I could be wrong, but to me a headband doesn't seem like a substitute for a cap.

...Who DID make the "Steve" comment this time?

Mr. Vareel 7th Apr 2011, 1:18 AM edit delete reply
There just has to be a Shroob in the comic at some point. There just has to be. They're too awesome to be completely passed up.
I_am_Solid_Snaek 7th Apr 2011, 6:55 AM edit delete reply
Mr. Vareel-
Way back in comic 24 there was a dead toad with a turban lying on the floor by the table. And 54 had a toad with an actual cap. I just think that any character that resembles a human and is wearing any sort of headgear with the mushroom cap's design is a toad. And you don't have to make a webcomic to get an account.

If they play that prank on Palma, I just might not read this comic anymore.

As for the Bowser's Kingdom comments? "Two mice fall into a bucket of cream. One of them quickly gives up and drowns. The other one tries so hard to get out that he churns the cream into butter and crawls out. Gentleman, as of right now, I am that second mouse."

Paraphrased: yes Go, we have all been there; no Morganstern, you do not suck (you may not be Michelangelo but your art and writing suit each other and you seem to have a knack for composition and pacing, and action); read Thousand Nines when you linked it, enjoyed.

@MeowMixIsForCats339: She'd find out it was a prank later that day. She'd just be pretty freaked out until then. Nothing to stop reading the comic about.

Anothing thing about the blonde: if she's a Toad, why is she yellow? I highly doubt that yellow is a normal skin color for Toads.

Grimlock13 7th Apr 2011, 4:39 PM edit delete reply
In this universe koopas don't always have a shell, goombas have a torso and arms and armored ant can speak normally without lips. A toad "mushroom cap" don't have to be exactly that, it could be another type of hat with similarities with the "mushroom cap".
Therazan 7th Apr 2011, 4:49 PM edit delete reply
besides, if it's not a Toad, what is she?
Spinnerlink 7th Apr 2011, 4:55 PM edit delete reply

I did not say they were above pulling pranks, though that was realy a test for go, I meant that, that would kinda cross the line. And yes I did just say that, that.
I_am_Solid_Snaek 7th Apr 2011, 6:25 PM edit delete reply
@ Spinnerlink
I actually agree with you (about that going way too far), but "the line" shifts from thing to thing. For example, a webcomic like Brawl in the Family has fairly strict standards in terms of the lewdness of their jokes, but a comic like Cyanide and Happiness will put its characters through any situation, no matter how disturbing. Mushroom Go hasn't really approached something like what Mr. Vareel suggested yet, so there's no telling what Morgenstern's established limit is.
MeowMixIsForCats339 7th Apr 2011, 11:08 PM edit delete reply
I'm sorry if I was a little to extream. I think that they would park each other but deffinatly not to that level. Besides, if I want to read about inepropreate things I'd take a look at VG cats.

By the way, has anybody seen llamas in hats? ......yeah.

I'm still not seeing how the joke would be crossing a line. But maybe that's just me. Which line would it be crossing? Is the joke just too awkward or is it touching on a taboo subject (i.e. sex), or something? If I've crossed a line, I want know what it is.

Speaking of McCoy...

He looks and acts suspiciously like the koala from ThousandNines...

Morgenstien: Care to comment? =]
Morgenstern 8th Apr 2011, 9:28 PM edit delete reply
I enjoy drawing smoking animals.

Personality-wise, it's pretty straight forward. The koala was originally a parody of Sonic the Hedgehog, and other "platforming creatures with 'tude" from the 90's (Bubsy, Gex, Aero, Crash, etc). I wrote him as being borderline insane, detached from reality and speaking in slang that was entirely outdated and anachronistic (like, 1940's slang in the same sentence as 80's sailor slang). He has a similar aloofness to McCoy, but the koala's calm was derived from how utterly disconnected from the real world he was.

McCoy is very much a follow-up in terms of personality--I'll freely admit that I carried over some of the things I liked about Thousand Nines into my new comic. Basically, I took the good parts out of the broken machine. Heck, he's even sidekick to a bad ass militant female, though I wouldn't compare Judeé to Martello in any other regard.

McCoy's aloofness is almost the opposite, though--it's not a detachment from reality, but rather, an excess of it. He's seen so much that he's no longer easily impressed, so invincible that he rarely experiences fear. He's not actually relaxed so much as he is calloused. It makes him seem almost overpowered as a character--that he's literally bored with how much he has done and can do--but I haven't really gotten into the McCoy stuff on panel yet. He easily bears one of the larger weaknesses of the crew on his shoulders, if not several.

Visually, I think the koala and McCoy would probably look less similar if I could manage to draw featheriness without it making it look like furriness. It doesn't help that their colors are similar, though that's totally an accident--the koala was blue as part of the Sonic joke. McCoy is deep purple because I didn't think pitch black would be a good color for a consistent character.

Just thought it was cool that some elements carried over was all. Thanks for the dissertation, though: it's amazing what goes into proper character design!

(I know nobody cares by now, but I'm saying this any way.) I guess that reason why Mr.Vareel's joke bothered me so much was because I didn't think that he would be so immiture to come up with it. (.....sorry Mr.Vareel......)
