Alternatively, Go develops some sort of super amnesia.

Alternatively, Go's "knocked the hell out" sense is tingling.

My roommate pointed out that initially, I had described this chapter as "less serious" and "sort of a breather chapter" between major arc points.

In fact, in the original plan, At Twisters Borough was going to border on a joke chapter. Kinda screwed that up, didn't I?

I guess it goes back to the whole "stuff taking a life of its own" thing. I had planned on Martello's flashback being shorter and a bit less... well, what it is. The more I thought about it and the more I sat down to write, the deeper I got into telling a story within the story; stuff I had planned to explain later, I ended up explaining immediately (to set up for telling OTHER things later).

Hopefully, the mood whiplash won't be too bad now that we're getting back to the present, and the rest of the chapter will have a rather different vibe to it. Chapter also might end up being longer than I expected.

Will probably say more stuff later, but I've put this off enough as it is.

I had many lulz from your "super amnesia" comment, Morgenstern.
It might have seemed funnier because it's 4:00 AM here, but whatever.

Good thing you went into detail about Martello's backstory. I could see how dragging out a characters backstory over many chapters might annoy some people. Not just because of the whole cliff hanger thing but because the more forgetful among us might have to keep going back through the archive in order to piece everything together into one coherent story.

On the other hand, though, I AM glad about the mood whiplash here. I was somewhat worried when GO started talking like he was going to reveal his origin story. I like it when those kind of things are spread out throughout a series. It gives me something to look forward too. A break from the action and the fighting that doesn't feel like filler.

Nice. Every sentence that needs interrupting should be interrupted with a CRASH! "How was your da-CRASH!" "Nice weather we're hav-CRASH!" "I'll have the sou-CRASH!"
P.S.- Awesome sauce in a box with packing materials! I just subscribed! Sooooo..... neato.

I don't think I like this Haze guy.
Let's see:
-Palma's as drunk as a skunk
-Go might be passed out
That leaves Martello versus Haze and the charging Chuck.
Hopefully Guy and McCoy can keep the sheriff from burning the chainless to the sand

I've been wondering since you started this comic thingy. If Go is considered a fairly okay dude to have in a fight then why, pray tell, is there no military force in the mushroom Kingdom other than Bowser's army.
T.TopHat 19th Mar 2011, 12:48 PM edit delete reply
I found your comic a bit ago...I think it was from BiTF ads...quite excellent, I must say.

Now, onto relevance. It looks like our assaulter here is one of those masks that chases you when you get a key in Super Mario Bros. 2...
Bonz0 19th Mar 2011, 12:56 PM edit delete reply
You mean a phanto? I see where you're coming from. In fact, someone already mentioned that Haze looked a lot like Dimentio (who looks similar to a Phanto himself). He has the same eyes of a Phanto, at least.

However, Morgenstern already said that Haze was a Dayzee, I believe. His hair is supposed to be styled like flower petals, he has the same blush marks on his cheeks and he wears green.

On another note, I wonder if someone should add "Mood Whiplash" to Mushroom Go's tvtropes page...
Dry Guy 19th Mar 2011, 4:07 PM edit delete reply
Huh, Dayzees are usually timid, or at least they are in the Paper Mario games, where they always run away. Really good at putting you to sleep, though, and if Haze is any indication, they will do so by any means necessary.

On a completely unrelated note, I wonder what a bob-omb would look like in this anthropomorphic style. You've already used bob-ombs as weapons, though. Then again, the mario universe has had them being both sentient and not, so...you never know.

Daaaaaaaamnnnnnnnit Morgen. Now Martello is going to have to mess up her knuckles punching that jackasses face out the back of his....hers? skull? ...... HOW THE HELL DOES BIOLOGY WORK IN THIS WORLD!?!?!?!.... sorry

@ A friend. As far as I have guessed Bowser's Army is not the only military force on the planet just seemingly the best trained and equiped. When Martello said the Mushroom Kingdom sent in its REAL army (Mario Aka Red Hat Aka Brother 1 aka Ohmygoditscomingrightforusrun!) one can guess that they also have a more standard less scary military that they used before Mario (aka OHGODMYSPLEENISONFIRE! I'll stop now) showed up and if one can make a informed guess they where losing BADLY before hand. For all we know Go there could be counted as a competant grunt.
Dry Guy 20th Mar 2011, 6:18 PM edit delete reply
Well, if you go by the New Super Mario Bros. games, toads can be pretty competent when they want to be. And if you remember in Super Mario Bros. 2 (also known as Doki Doki Panic?) the toad there had a higher "strength" rating than everyone else, Mario included. On the other hand, I believe toads are more commonly portrayed as pretty cowardly and prone to panicking, and they always seem to get captured. It the same as Peach, really: they are great fighters when the plot needs them to be, and get kidnapped when the plot needs them to be.
Guy with no name 20th Mar 2011, 6:43 PM edit delete reply
Wait, wasn't Martello super depressed when she started talking about her story? What's with the sudden change of mood? I mean, now she seems pretty proud
Morgenstern 20th Mar 2011, 6:48 PM edit delete reply
I'm doing to delve into it full-steam later on down the road, but I think I can safely touch on it now.

The ability to use power-ups is referred to in-comic as the Old Art for exactly that reason--the Toads don't use it anymore. Why they don't is another topic for another time, but what it boils down to is this: most of the Toad army is, in the event of an actual war, borderline useless. They're trained to fight, sure, but up against Koopa technology and talents, their only real hope is Mario. Mario is an absolute, hands down master of the Old Art, and he acts as the Toads' resident Superman when things go bad.

There are still Toads around that know the Old Art, but it has entirely fallen out of practice and is really pretty dangerous to use in the first place. I like to think that the two Toads using power-ups in NSMB are actually testing the water a bit--maybe the Toad government is considering bringing the Old Art back into practice for their soldiers, or at the very least, they feel the need to train backups in case something happens to Mario. I mean, the guy's not immortal--age, disease, SOMETHING will eventually catch up to him... and if Red and/or Green Hat goes down, the entire Mushroom Kingdom is screwed. I think the NSMB Toads are meant to be emergency Marios, possibly bodyguards for Peach to reduce the Master Plumber's workload.

But Go is sort of an anomaly, as most Toads in their right mind wouldn't know the Old Art in the first place--let alone be using it with any sort of frequency. It's a dead practice, a remnant of the times before Mario was around. It's dangerous to him, and in some ways, it can be dangerous to the people around him.

Mostly stuff I'll detail harder later. Like I said, the things I'm explaining right now aren't even the tip of the iceberg--there's alot going on with the Old Art and where Go learned it, why it's no longer used, and Mario's overall dynamic with the Mushroom Kingdom. It might be a while before I really hit the meat of the issue, though, just because of everything else that's going on in the comic.

.... Ya know Morgenstern...that just makes me wanna read more to see just how you have fleshed out this world. Its fun to see what you have built. Its both new and intereting yet true to the source material, your really very good. And just cause I HAVE to ask. Whats your view of the times Mario and Bowser teamed up (Super Mario RPG to name the one clearest in my mind).

@ Guy With No Name. Simple when she was just depressed, she was just thinking about all the bad stuff that happened to her pops. The story got her to think about some of the good times as well plus that super awesome "Go forth and be free" Speech he gave. Plus have Go say he was awesome helped as well.

Hey remember when sasha said the Toad military had done some stunts before to catch the chainless? Will they ever send mario to get them? Say that it is a time when Bowser is not attacking, maybe they send him to lower threats.
Grimlock13 21st Mar 2011, 1:58 PM edit delete reply
I will tell, you this: Yes, Bowser is far from the nicest guy around, but he know that there are monsters and dangers worse in the world than himself and he is able to put his plan(and sometime his pride) aside to protect this world from them. Yes, he conquer kingdoms and kidnap people of royal blood, but look at it that way: by kidnapping those kings and princess, he take the control of most of those kingdom with limited bloodshed on both sides. He does his conquest through strategies, not brute strength. Think about it.

I wasn't saying that the guy was a unthinking brute (Ego Centric Blowhard maybe but again thats just Super Mario RPG talking) though honestly I really hadn't put much thought into the hows and whys of the conflict as presented. Bowser must be a MASTER at Blitzkrieg in order to tally up the land gains he gets. He might even be up there with Erwin Rommel but we have yet to see proof that he just doens't have good leadership under him....or if the regular toad army really is JUST THAT lame. All in all I look forward to finding out.

He's not an actual Mario character. Like the rest of the cast he is an original character based off of a species from Mario. Specifically, he is a Dayzee.
