Round 3 of the ComicFury character tournament thing has started.

Also subscribe, plz

I'd say more, but I've already stayed up way too late for having to work tomorrow. (I will probably stay up longer anyway, because I like to do things that are dumb)

Maybe he's going to tell her that he doesn't actually want her to join the military? Or would that be too easy of a conclusion for this particular story?

Infamous Nefarious
I agree..... He'll tell her about how his own country otherwise abandonned him after his injuries and the medical treatment he was given was nothing more than a placation. And then go on to tell her to make her own loyalties, to live free. To become a pirate.

I like how the comic can switch to action to calm without driving anyone away. Too many comics have action or peace for too long that it get's stale. Mushroom Go doen't!

Not everyone in the Koopas armies are Koopas, there are also Goombas, Beetles, Shyguys, Boos, dinosaurs, and miscellaneous thing we don't know exactly what they are. I was somehow hoping that a few of the others would start a debate about it. Maybe another time.

Magravan 14th Mar 2011, 11:15 PM edit delete reply
Have you even read Wake the Sleepers? How can you judge the characters if you've never read the comics that they are a part of?

They are both great characters, but Oralee is not so easily dismissed... I could easily see her winning the entire thing...
Grimlock13 15th Mar 2011, 6:52 AM edit delete reply
The character contest is a popularity contest, not a badassery contest, if she is more popular, then it's normal for her to win.
Bonz0 15th Mar 2011, 8:54 AM edit delete reply
When did I say anything bad about the character, Magravan? When did I judge the character? Really, how did you get all that nonsense out of me saying I was not crazy about McCoy losing?

I know, of course. But first of all this is the internet. Rule of Cool reigns supreme.

That said, I voted for characters that seemed more interesting or unique. Characters that stand out. Even if the characters in Mushroom Go had little depth (they don't, of course) I would rank them higher than deep characters that are generic.

Who sounds more unique? A chain smoking pirate raven who practices martial arts and kills mutant plants with his bare fists, or orphan girl whose parents were killed by cliches and now has to be self reliant? Even without reading either comic or knowing that one is based in the world of Mario, I'm still going to be drawn to the first comic and it's characters.

Also, if I was voting purely based on badassery then I would not have voted for characters like "Mike the dad" or the various stickmans and tetris pieces. Or maybe I just vote for underdogs and get upset when, once again, the overdogs win. That's boring to me, you know? Upsets are fun. Everything going according to predictions is not.
Magravan 15th Mar 2011, 4:38 PM edit delete reply
If you don't feel that you were being condescending, then there's nothing really to be gained from it. Obviously we would have a difference of opinion.

As for Oralee, I think that she has the potential to take the whole competition, and it's not really anything to feel bad about if you lose to the person who wins the entire competition... Whether it happened in round 1 or the finals, every person who went up against them lost, the first rounder just had the misfortune to not be able to go up against anyone else...

I actually thought McCoy would have a good shot at winning the whole thing as well.

And I don't think McCoy was really an underdog. He has second place on All Time Popular, has more visitors than most comics on CF, and asked his readers to support him... He had a good shot at the top spot..
Bonz0 15th Mar 2011, 4:58 PM edit delete reply
It's not a matter of whether or not I'm being condescending, it was a matter of you not having any evidence that I was doing so. Because I referred to her as "chick"? That's being condescending? That's being judgmental? I have to read the whole comic before jumping to the conclusion that the character is female?

Or, and this is what I'm assuming, you misinterpreted my post as me being upset at McCoy losing to a character I have contempt for whereas in reality it was less about a negative opinion of Oralee and more about a supporting opinion for the characters of Mushroom Go. I would have said the same thing if any other character I know nothing about beat McCoy. Except maybe Skeptical Stickman. I would have been ok with him beating McCoy. I've only read about a dozen GSICD pages but it seems like a pretty entertaining comic to me.

The thing about the underdogs was actually rationale for why I voted for stick and "joke" characters, not why I voted for McCoy. Sorry for the confusion.

Also, have you heard of a web comic called "Wasted Life" at interversecomics.com ? The Other Grey Meat reminds me of it for some reason. Probably the presence of a company that deals with maintaining the bodies of the undead in both comics.
Morgenstern 15th Mar 2011, 5:19 PM edit delete reply
I think referring to her as "some chick" did kind of come off like you were brushing her aside. Maybe it wasn't meant that way, but... y'know.

I don't read Wake the Sleepers myself, but I'll say they have amazing artwork, and I don't really feel bad for losing to one of their characters. Also, Oralee is adorable.

And I wouldn't really have described McCoy as an underdog, either--though on the other side of the coin, I didn't really think I'd win. I dipped into my sizable fanbase for support, sure--but it was still trying to convince a bunch of people that normally don't visit the forums to do so versus people that already visit the forums with frequency, are already invested in the tournament and probably don't read Mushroom Go. I've had a few people try to guilt trip me over asking my non-CF fanbase for support, but seeing as it was a literal popularity contest I didn't know at the time it would be an issue. I assumed everybody else was doing the same--forgetting that most people on CF gets their readers from... well, CF.

Which does present a weird situation I'm half afraid to mention--Mushroom Go is second All-Time Popular on CF, but I don't think all that many CF regulars actually read it. The grand majority of my readers are from off-site, making this comic like... the least popular all-time popular comic on ComicFury. I'd probably put that in my signature if I weren't afraid of offending people.
Bonz0 15th Mar 2011, 5:39 PM edit delete reply
Like I said before, I was assuming the stick figures and joke characters like Tetris pieces would be the underdogs and be defeated in the first round. I wasn't talking about McCoy. I might have been wrong on this assumption though.

I actually didn't know that Mushroom Go was so highly rated. And I know what you mean about the popularity situation. Didn't someone on the forums even have trouble identifying the main character or something? All I saw was your response picture with Palma and McCoy. I couldn't find the thing you were responding to.

Oh, and screw them for trying to guilt trip you for asking us for support. Are we second-class citizens here because we don't post in the forums? This is like fighunter.com all over again, where you weren't allowed to be part of the community unless you posted in every thread.

Bonz0 15th Mar 2011, 5:40 PM edit delete reply

Morgenstern 15th Mar 2011, 5:47 PM edit delete reply
But yeah, Mushroom Go is second All-Time Popular based on subscribers, only behind The Other Grey Meat (which is, incidentally, the comic that Magravan is involved with). There's no ranking system for say, total hits or anything, but I'd probably be up there for that, too. Most of the artists on ComicFury get readership through being really active on the forums, convincing other CF writers and artists to sort of intermingle and form this big happy family of people that read each other's comics (though there's plenty of people that don't have their own comics, they're just regular readers active in the community).

I don't have a whole lot of "time" or "things to say," though, so I tend to post less on the forums. Most of my readership is from blowing paychecks on Project Wonderful (mmm, delicious ramen noodles) and scrambling around the internet, throwing links at anyone that won't ban me for it. But I talk those off-site readers into joining CF and subscribing to the comic, leaving me captital P Popular on the front page without being lower case p popular in the actual community.

Because if I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it backwards. New comic should be up soon-ish, on an off note.
Morgenstern 15th Mar 2011, 5:54 PM edit delete reply
And if I say anything stupid or douchey, just let me know. I probably don't mean half this stuff the way it comes out, I'm just still adjusting to the whole "people actually read my comic" thing. Past experience with old comics (and old comic hosts, NOT NAMING ANY NAMES) sort of turned me into a bitter jerk about stuff like this, a habitual attitude I'm trying to break out of.
Bonz0 15th Mar 2011, 6:15 PM edit delete reply
If anything, you're probably helping the community as a whole by bringing in more outsiders. I, for one, would never have known about comics like Good Sir I Cannot Draw or The Other Grey Meat at all if not for seeing your advertisements next to "Everybody Hates Weegie".

So, yeah, other comics are getting new readers too because of you. They shouldn't complain when you try to get us to participate in the forums as well. If you reap the benefits of having a higher percentage of this new popularity for your actions to expand the community you should enjoy it.
Prospekt 15th Mar 2011, 6:24 PM edit delete reply
I think the people can stand to be offended. I know plenty of communities where fans are absolute pricks about the hosted comic, whether it's the quality, the lack of updates, or whatever, and in the end, you're doing this for us. We're not paying for you to do this, you don't owe us anything. So, lemme just say this. Be an ass if you want. Again, you don't owe us ANYTHING. Screw anyone who says otherwise. Because people will end up saying such things about you and your comic.

Also, just want to say, looking forward to the next update. I'm hitting F5 every few minutes. And typically, I only do such in the occasion of comics I enjoy keeping up with. Great stuff you've got here, man.

@Bonz0: You're not reading the right stick figure comics then ;)

hey, I read it, and I'm a regular! I'm even nerdy enough to recommend Mushroom Go to people in real life. (Basically anyone who mentions that they're a Mario fan) It's one of my favorite CF comics, top 2, easily. If I was only here to build my own fan-base I would have given up by now.
(to my eight subscribers- Love you lots!)

Magravan 22nd Mar 2011, 4:42 AM edit delete reply
I think that ground rules should have been established for the contest. I personally opted not to ask our readers to support our characters because, at risk of sounding like an arrogant dick, we get more visitors in a week than some comics have overall...

It just seemed unfair to me to pit readership against readership when we have such an advantage in regular readers over some of the comics.

The other problem is that people who are invested in the CF community have likely been exposed to these comics or their creators, even if they've chosen not to read them... A TOGM or Mushroom GO reader that isn't part of that community is going to see characters that they have no clue on and just zone in on the few that they do, which really screws up the brackets when they randomly vote.

All that being said, I think that you're doing a good thing overall for Comicfury, Morgenstern. You're bringing people to the site and they might not ever use it again except to subscribe to your comic.. Or maybe they will. And either way, you're showing people that pulling readers in from a Project Wonderful advertising campaign can be used to rocket up the list...

Ideally, they might do the same, and the individual comics benefit as does ComicFury.

And I haven't read Wasted Life, Bonz0... I'll go check it out though :)

Edit: I checked it out, but the font was really annoying to read... I didn't get past the second page before I wanted to stop reading it, solely due to the font... The artwork looked pretty good though :)
