Ehh might have somebody else doing the comic soon, working on it

So... that's it. I'm done. Show's over, pack it up, go home.

Let me preface this by saying: I know. I'm a big jerk. There's a million webcomics out there that start out strong and they end early and I promised that this wasn't going to be one of those comics, but now it is and I'm a big liar and a jerk. I know. I already know.

Trust me. I know.

I've just... I can't do it anymore. It doesn't really get any more complicated than that. I could go on a big rant about the whys and the hows but at the end of the day, that's... that's it. I just can't push this cart up the hill any further. I know people are into this and I'm sorry. That's all I can do is apologize. I'll probably do a write up of what would have happened in the plot, and where the story was headed and what all the stupid little secrets I was so excited about actually meant, and post it so people aren't just left wondering what was going on forever. For the moment, though, I just... I don't want to keep people waiting any more. I know people had certain expectations and I've been letting everybody down, and this certainly isn't better but at least now you won't be waiting on something that isn't going to happen. I'll fill in the blanks later and I'll still be around to read and respond to comments, but for now I just wanted to get the message out.

The comic's over.

Well, I can understand wanting to jump out because of reasons you don't want to share, but you ever though of passing it on? I'm sure there are more than enough fans here who would want to see it continue for someone to chip something in, whether it's art or, in my case, a writer. I don't think we could do it as well as you could, but everyone would be able to see Mushroom Go continue.

If not, than I propose a toast, and a moment of silence to our friends on the Chainless. May they forever remain in our memory.
Spikeskug 9th Oct 2012, 9:52 PM edit delete reply
I agree, you could pass on the story idea you had to someone and they could sort of do a collab with ya from there. They could send you how a comic would go and you could simply approve or disprove it until they submit an idea that's close enough to your vision. :)

Once some time has passed change the comic so it starts on the first page by default and if you ever feel like getting back to the comic (a big if I know) I'll stay subscribed.

Well, it was a fantastic ride while it lasted.

Just to let you know, you aren't letting us down. Everything you've done so far has been your own effort, pursuing your own passions. We don't deserve any of this. We accept any delays because we love the comic and we will take whatever you create.

So don't worry that you're letting anyone down. Because you aren't. If you love this comic, then take as much time as you need until it satisfies you. If you feel you don't have the energy anymore, than that's okay too, and we'll respect that. But don't feel like you have to, because we're not disappointed in you. We're so proud of you.

I will keep this comic on my RSS feed, to read any further announcements you make.

Thanks for the comic. Don't give up yet though, don't let all your secrets out, maybe years down the road you'll be able to pick things back up. And what you have done is totally impressive, use it in resumes and all sorts of things, be proud of it!

This makes me sad. I wish you did still write though. Perhaps some people with artistic fan art could even do a few illustrations. The reason I say you should continue writing is that you have a gift for it. Your dialogue was witty and to the point. Characters were well thought out and had their own voices. You did an amazing job and should be very proud of your accomplishments. But please do not give up on your creativity, it may aid you well in future careers. Alas, the comic is over, but I shall continue to read from the beginning again. Thank you for the comic!
Tobias7 8th Oct 2012, 7:27 PM edit delete reply
I agree, but whatever you do, don't dump out all your details. Either make it possible to continue in the future or turn it into a story, but don't give up and dump out all the secrets and not do anything with it.

I also agree, You never know when you might want to return to this project. I mean now it might seem pretty rough to keep it going, but maybe someday in the future you want to pick it back up. If you don't, that's ok too.
Morg yours is the only webcomic that was EVER able to keep my attention throughout the entire run, and that's contending with stuff like Brawl in the Family, 8 Bit Theater, Homestuck, etc

It's been a pleasure.

As much as I'll miss it...

You did this all for free, out of your own accord. You don't owe us nothing. So if you decide that you have to pull the plug, we have neither right nor reason to give you a hard time because of it. You're quite likely doing enough of that alreay anyway. Never easy to let go of one's brainchild after all.

But if you were to try and put the remaining story you had planned into writing... That might be a way allowing you to still tell the story you wanted and us enjoying it. Even though it's not in the way you originally planned for.

Sorry to hear that Morg. I hope that you can remember the positives more than the negatives after some time has passed.

Thanks for your efforts, it was an interesting twist on a concept that tends towards being mundane, and I thought you pulled it off well.

Ya know, I've read this comic from the start. I've never been one to be terribly vocal about things, posting in comments sections or the like. Reading a good story and enjoying others' art was enough. When I clicked the link over here just now, I got excited over the update, then I read the text and my heart skipped...

A lot of things running through my head have already been said; sadness, appreciation, hope. I guess all I can really say is I've been there. I have boxes of half realized comics and unfinished art sitting in my room that died for various reasons. Whether it was busy-ness, depression, apathy, or frustration, they got stowed. Will I ever finish them? Who knows. All I know is if you're not having fun doing it, it might be time to put it to rest.

Come what may, you are a damned fine comicker Morg and I hope you continue in some aspect. If not, cest la vie and godspeed.

With this comic at it's end, I've ended up making the odd decision that I'm going to pay tribute in a small way and cosplay as Go at the next convention that I go to. Hi, long time reader and first time (...and last I guess) commenter here. I just want to say that I by no means begrudge you ending the comic. Stuff happens, I get that. But! Giving no reason why the story just stops? That makes you a jerk. Virtually the only reason I can think of for you not wanting to tell your loyal fans why you're stopping the comic is that you know, deep down, that it isn't a very good reason to let so many people down. I suppose I really don't have any influence here, but I suspect a lot of people (myself included) are going to assume the worst for your hidden excuse.

Don't just tell yourself the comic will never return. Warn your fans, sure; but if you tell yourself that then even if you get past whatever caused you to stop, you'll not want to return. If you're just feeling too depressed to continue, keep in mind that all tragedy is ephemeral.

All said, however, if there is real disaster behind this; I suspect I speak for many of your fans when I say: I'm sorry for, and good luck with your dead or ailing relative/severe injury/conscription into a secret government agency/embarrassingly-ugly-but-still-meriting-care baby.
Tobias7 9th Oct 2012, 8:52 AM edit delete reply

This. Exactly this. Don't give away the plot, even if you close things with us, leave it open for years down the road. And though I don't know what you're stuggling with I'm guessing it's one of three things.

1. A life crisis. I've been there, I could hardly think straight for 2 years. But 2 years isn't forever. I have projects that I was working on that got massively delayed. That was okay, it was a life crisis. But now those old projects are looking interesting again.

2. Apathy
You've always seemed to push yourself way too hard. I honestly don't think Mushroom Go should've been weekly, I think it should've been biweekly or monthly. You've attempted to put a full time job's worth of effort into it when you obviously didn't have that. I applaud your efforts, but sometimes it's worth it taking longer to let yourself have fun. If it's the case Mushroom Go is no longer fun for you, put it away for a year, go catch up on life, and if you ever come back to it, make it biweekly or monthly, a schedule you can and will stick to and one that gives you plenty of time and doesn't make you feel guilty. I'm in the software business and am used to the "I can get it done in a week" turning into "I can get it done in a month."

3. Unworthiness. Though I don't think this is THE reason you are stopping, I've definitely seen you think you are unworthy sometimes. Things like thinking Obfuscobble was better at the art. If you ever think like this, you are totally wrong. This is one of the best two webcomics out there, up there with Dominic Deegan, and IMO surpassing XKCD, though it's really a different type of webcomic. And you did it all on your own too. No matter what happens, be super proud of Mushroom Go and list it on resumes and things.

I wish you the best in life, and if you ever need someone to randomly chat with, I'm always around!
Bonz0 9th Oct 2012, 2:55 PM edit delete reply
I thought that Pinstripe guy made it clear that comparing Mushroom Go to Dominic Deegan is an insult to Morgenstern.

XKCD? Come on, if you're going to compare MG to that type of webcomic at least compare it to something good like SMBC.
Tobias7 9th Oct 2012, 3:17 PM edit delete reply
Just comparing it to things I read.
Morgenstern 9th Oct 2012, 8:58 AM edit delete reply
I have definitely decided not to spill what the rest of the plot was going to be. Not just yet, anyway. I talked to a few people about it, and while I seriously doubt I'm going to stumble into the magical set of circumstances that would let me continue this... well, stranger things have happened.

I make absolutely no promises. It might not be months, it might not be years, it might not be ever. I'm not leaving the door open for a return, but I've decided at least not to lock the door and burn the house down. Nobody should get excited about me potentially picking this back up, the chances are damn slim if not absolutely none.

But I'm at least going to take my secrets with me.

...Maybe not all of them. There's a couple of little stupid avatar related things I might still diverge. But the plot as a whole, I... think I might hold onto a little longer.

And I do still plan on doing something in the way of storytelling in the future, but it won't be Mushroom Go related or a webcomic. Like, at all. I'll... probably talk more about that when I get to it.
Tobias7 9th Oct 2012, 9:02 AM edit delete reply
Good, I definitely think that's the right choice, even if you don't pick it up :) You deserve the right to be able to continue it, as well as the right to not continue it.
Amaare 9th Oct 2012, 11:56 AM edit delete reply
I don't know whether this decision is good or bad, part of me wants to know what was going to happen, another part want's to cling to hope.
On the other hand, I do know and respect that it is your decision to make.
The speed and, immodestly, quality with which you developed a fan-base is probably the best sign of your talent that the world can give you.

One more thing. Don't feel bad. Morg, you guilt-trip yourself way too much. You didn't let us down, you gave us something special, and we can't complain if you're just not able to continue. Whatever you do, do not mire yourself in guilt. Be proud, think of what you have done, not what you couldn't do.

I also personally think you've built an extremely loyal fantbase too. If you ever need us, we're there for you, like you were there for us. Sometimes it's time to give and produce and be awesome, but other times, it's time to accept rest and help. You've given us a lot, it sounds like you need to start taking more. And if there's ever anything you need from us, whether it's to talk, donations, a graphic designer, or a crazy software engineer who can turn sketches into digital art, feel free to call on us, Morgenstern's Army :) I'm reachable at tobiaslionheart9@msn.com anytime. No matter what, I highly enjoyed this comic. I kinda wish I had more to say but everyone else kinda summed it up. If you ever get back to this, amazing. If not, that's okay.

It's still kinda funny though, this little story of yours had inspired what's probably going to be my first novel. While I've overhauled it to run on mythology instead of the Mario universe, you can still see some of the influences this had on its setting and certain characters. I made a passing reference to 'the sheriff's favorite band of bandits' and I'm going to leave that in there.

Still, thanks for the wonderful comic, Morg.

And, quite honestly, this is the first thing that came to my mind, in both reference to you and us.

Well this sucks.

Telling us you were going to at least give us some emotional closure to the characters we've come to care about and then taking it back on the slim chance you -might- decide to continue years in the future kinda sucks too...
Tobias7 9th Oct 2012, 7:57 PM edit delete reply
I'm really happy about him not spilling the beans, but in truth it's not about the slim hope he might continue. One reason would be that it would be too rash, whatever Morg is going through right now seems somewhat sudden (could be mistaken) and he should wait a bit before making a big decision like that that would permanently affect Mushroom Go.

However, the real reason I think he did what is right is a little more complicated. I think it would not be good for him personally to say, "Hey, I give up, here's all my cool little ideas that I'll never implement." I think that would harm his dignity and it would be better for *him* if he never revealed his secrets than if he did that. As he said, it would be different than closing the door on Mushroom Go, it would be burning the house down. As someone who is seriously involved in pet projects, I can say that might hurt him worse than the decision to stop. It might not be good for the fandom either, getting a spoiler dump like that. I feel like leaving it the way it is, with the Chainless mid-battle might be better than a small snippet of what would've happened. So my feelings on the decision are less about hope and more about honor and dignity, less about us and more about Morg and even Mushroom Go.

Morg, in your last post you said:
"But I'm at least going to take my secrets with me."

Keep that, right there. I know you're hurting from something, but no matter what, don't lose that spirit of what you said. That spirit is more important than Mushroom Go, it is more important than your fans' curiousity. That spirit is who you are, the creator, innovator, builder, one I respect. Guard it well.

It's been a good read from start to finish, and I've been here since the beginning. Posted rarely, have always enjoyed the updates when it came. I loved this comic blah blah gush gush boo hoo hoo.

Did you really just give us a generic 'it's better if we don't see each other anymore. It's not you it's me' type author finale? I mean yeah... I'm a fan and I respect ya. But, i'm not really feeling this as far as an explanation to a fanbase that's supposed to be respected in kind. I don't need closure on the story but i could use some on why you're stepping down, rather than the vague and murky and insubstantial after-school special style goodbye you're dishing out.

Come on. You're better than this.

Personally, while I don't know circumstances, I can appreciate your decision. Personally I run tabletop RPG games and have had many occasions that I've wanted to just stop, and several that I had. Here's to hoping that situations are promising for you in the future, and if in some strange dimension you are able to pick back up and continue...we shall be waiting for more tales of intrigue from the crew of the chainless...

fuzzy3158 10th Oct 2012, 5:03 PM edit delete reply
Well fuck that shit.
I would've actually liked a bit of closure on the story side. Especially since you have been saying for months that you had extremely huge plot stuff in store for us. I for one do feel completely cheated. I know that this is completely for free, but you did promise big things.
Honestly, can you not even have the decency (yes I went there) to write the rest of the story out in non-illustrated form or something? if you just tell the story, I'm sure my imagination will do the rest.
I do want to stress that the reason I'm this upset and bitching about things, is because this was my second favorite webcomic and also the one with the best story by far. I really really wanted to know where this was going. Your portrayal of Mario was the most goddamn epic thing I have ever read about the guy. I was really astonished.
I'm jusut saying, if you can write like that, can you not continue the story in written form? I'm not one to wait for years, and to me keeping your secrets to yourself is just selfish and breaking a promise.
There's my two cents.
I really loved this comic.
I adored this comic.
I'll get over it soon enough, but I'm still disappointed.

I was going to make a big fuss. Maybe throw in a Big NO!
But those are too cheese-y. Neither of those would bring this comic back. Neither of them would express how I, how WE, the viewers, felt.

So instead I'll say this:
I've read my a webcomic in my day. All of them, no mater what point I start at, I always go to the beginning before I read to the most recent. And so, any webcomic I read, I read from start to bitter-sweat end.

And I can only say this: All good webcomics must end sometime. Some sooner than others. But in the end, they all leave a hole in my heart. Some holes are bigger than others, some smaller. But this will leave the biggest hole of them all.

Mushroom Go will be missed.

My the Chainless sail the sandy seas and be unbounded forever.

Felt that I should comment, even though it's over. I've been reading since almost the beginning, and I've really enjoyed everything you've done. I sincerely hope that whatever's pulling you away can be resolved soon--not just because I love this comic and want to see it revived at some point down the line, but because you seem like a good guy, Morg. Thanks for the ride. I'll keep checking back.

Morgenstern 16th Oct 2012, 2:13 AM edit delete reply
I figured I'd wait, let the comments build a bit so I could try and hit all the points at once.

I didn't originally want to talk about the whys, as some people in the past have complained about me whining and I don't want to be that guy... but since it's been asked repeatedly, screw it.

The reason I'm not doing it anymore is that I don't like drawing. I can't stand it. I get frustrated and go through like two stacks of paper and end up ragequitting trying to do one picture. I know I'm not bad at drawing, but I'm not an artist at heart--I don't have that drive that a real artist does. I'm a writer, and I can write like crazy with no problems, which is why I'm probably going to be sticking to something along those lines for future projects... but as far as drawing, I'm done. I'm not going to keep being miserable trying to make myself draw. I'm not in a financial position to comfortably hire out an artist anymore, either, though--I'd like to still have somebody like Obfuscobble on board to just do the art for me, but my money situation has changed. I know there's people out there that would do it for free out of love, but--and I don't mean any offense by this--I need a professional artist or something resembling it, or I'll just be dragging around a mockery of what the comic should have been. I'd rather end the comic than turn it into garbage.

Some people have suggested that I do the comic like once every couple of months or whatever like VGCats does. This isn't a bad idea, the problem being... well, time. I have so many ideas and so much story to tell that even at my intended pace of a comic a week, Mushroom Go still would have taken upwards of five or ten years to complete. Once a week was a tolerable pace, doing it once every few months would drive me insane.

Some people have suggested that I do it in pure writing form, and just don't bother with drawing it--do it in serial fiction format. This... is harder to explain. A surprisingly large number of factors in Mushroom Go rely on visuals. Characters talking over scenes to create a parallel, visual symbolism, characters hiding facets of themselves in their appearances. I couldn't describe these things and get away with it, it has to be seen, it has to be there so the reader can go back later and go oh my god it was there the whole time. Some of these things are insignificant and fun for fun's sake, but a chunk of these were actually critical to the plot. I had originally planned Mushroom Go as a comic; it was conceived as a comic, and written as a comic. I don't want to stuff it into a hole it doesn't fit in, and try and force the narrative to work a different way just for the sake of keeping it alive. I think I elsewhere compared it to Weekend at Bernie's--I don't want to just be hauling the comic's corpse around, desperately pretending that no it's totally the same thing it still works.

I do have stories that are written as serial fictions and are planned as pure writing endeavors, not comics. I'd rather just tell those, if running a comic isn't an option anymore (and similarly, those writing endeavors wouldn't work as comics for close to the same reasons--certain scenes are just envisioned a certain way and it would take away from those scenes to alter their medium).

When I announced that I'd changed my mind about revealing Mushroom Go's plot, and that I was going to keep my secrets with me, I also said that I'd reveal some secrets. Here we go:

My avatar for the past ... while has featured an animation. It'll flash the words ARCHIVE, and more recently, the words WHICH ONE WAS IT. Some people have visited my website's archive section and noticed the message at the top--a king unit was disconnected. Some people correctly identified that as a reference to page 103, Falling of the bombs. I was actually kind of disappointed that nobody took it the step further, though I did anticipate as much. I've actually been playing a game with the site, and been playing it for a long time--as time wore on, I planned on dropping more and more hints, more arrows pointing to the goal, and seeing how long and how much it would take before someone pieced it together.

On page 103, it's mentioned that the King Unit that disconnected (which one was it) was King Unit 7500.

Go to the Archive section, and look at the titles for pages 75 through 100. Page 100's title was intentionally done in all caps, and not in English, to make it visually distinct--to signify it as the end of a message. Look at the first letter in each comic title, 75 - 100. If you put the first letter in each comic title together, they spell a secret message. Yes, I've been intentionally doing this since page 75. I've been doing this since April of 2011. I thought back then that somebody might catch onto it--maybe from a cursory glance at the archives, likely on accident, but I thought a little prompting would likely be in order.

Look at the archive again. Pages 101 through 121 which, again, is not in English and has a symbol where the first letter should be, again to try and make it visually distinct if somebody just happened upon the archive. 101 through 121 spell out another message.

122 through the end spell out the last hidden message. And yes, those other two messages are URLs to websites I've registered.

http://thriveisaliveonallthesides.com/ was the first, and was going to be a side project called Mushroom Go: Mondo. I planned on doing it with Obfuscobble while I picked drawing the main comic back up, but complications arose and I ended up just... kinda writing stuff instead. I didn't get as far as I'd wanted to; originally, the story was going to go in far more detail about Fabes, and the mysterious Goomba he keeps talking to, and their relationship. Who Fabes is, why he's hunting the Chainless, and how he and his partner react to Fungus and Shrapnel joining their efforts.

http://isfungusamongusatall.com/, also known as Mushroom Go: Gnarly, was started later and was a joint project between me and Cammiluna. We got maybe halfway through with it, though I don't currently have all of the stripes posted, only the first one. I planned on waiting until somebody found the page, then updating it weekly or so for the folks that had figured the secret out. I'll probably upload the rest of what we have later so people can see where it was, and Cammi and I have talked about finishing it just... kinda for the sake of finishing it, even if its relevance is moot at this point. It was going to establish the back story of a character for later in the main comic, as well as answer questions regarding certain background events. I'm not making any promises about when that whole thing'll be worked on, since Cammi's got a busy schedule and I'm presently getting my money back in order. She's offered to do it for free, but that's silly and I'm not going to let her.

Anyway, I appreciate everybody's support. It's been really hard to just give up like this, especially since it seems to have affected so many people in such a powerful way. Like I said, there was a crazy huge amount of story left for me to tell, and I barely scratched the tip of the iceberg--up until this point we were still in the prologue of sorts, the real heft of the comic's direction wasn't even really getting started until the end of this chapter/beginning of the next. I'd like to get into a position someday where I can comfortably hire an artist--somebody good, somebody that fits, somebody that can maybe do it twice a week. Or maybe I can find a supplementary income, and draw it myself instead of working. I don't think I'd mind drawing it if that was my job. I don't know, I'm just rambling at this point. I'm not letting go of the hope that I can come back to this, is the point--I'm still very passionate about the subject matter and the characters and everything else, I just can't bring myself to do it anymore no matter how badly I want to. I don't know if I'll ever finish this at all, so I don't want anybody getting too attached to the idea of it coming back. Not at this point.

I will still be around, though, and I will continue to write. It'll be something new, something different, probably less based on a previous property. I'm not just going to up and leave--I still have a billion stories to tell, even if Mushroom Go can't be one of them.

I think that should answer most of the questions I've gotten.
Silverpraetorian 16th Oct 2012, 7:21 AM edit delete reply

Holy crap lot of reading... anyways, that clarification is VERY reasonable from my point of view. Plus, now that you mention it, Mushroom Go would make a terrible written story. you have a point there. good luck on future stuff. I will be checking back here (probably often, not like life is to big an obstacle to click on a bookmark now and again.)
Tobias7 16th Oct 2012, 10:34 AM edit delete reply
Yeah, what you said makes a lot of sense, and I understand and agree.
Mushroom Go:
1. Needs to be fun,
2. Needs to be drawn,
3. Needs to be drawn well.
4. Needs to have a good pace. (Though I think a slow temporary pace would be fine, I definitely see what you are saying)

The only thing I have to say is definitely don't give up. I can easily see this being on hold for months/years, but I see no reason why Mushroom Go will never be continued. Things change, eventually you will have the money to hire someone good that fits mushroom go, or maybe you'll even find a professional willing to do it for fun. I've had projects that have been on hold for 5 years or so, and I think it might be time to start some of them up. And we'll definitely be interested in your other projects, so keep us posted. Thanks so much for explaining it to us too. And wow, those archive secrets are crazy! Thank you for everything, keep us posted!

And while you might not like drawing, you are VERY good at it. I have the same kind of relationship with writing, I spent a semester writing a master's thesis, it ended up being very good but ruined my semester.

If it's possible, I'd suggest trying to find ways to draw as a hobby and have it be fun, but also understand if you can't figure out how to make it fun/have too much else to do. But you should be proud of your skill even if you don't like to use it ;)

That collaboration was the most fun I've had in webcomics because much like how Morg hates drawing, i hate writing and having all the details laid out for me meant I could just pick up the pencil and scribble things.

Cammi, If Morg gave you his draft of what he wants the story to be like, do you think you could illustrate it? Y'know, for free? As well as managing the two other comics you're doing? And also juggling all your IRL business?

(I know that it's a long shot, but still, it's a piece of hope I can hold onto for now.)
Cammiluna 18th Oct 2012, 8:28 AM edit delete reply
My art is nowhere near the professional standards of Obfuscobble, so it wouldn't do the main storyline any justice. Plus, a fullcolor comic page takes me about two weeks of spare time to complete, so I wouldn't be able to keep up with weekly deadlines anyway. Sorry. :(

Gnarly's best convenience was being able to take my time with the six page buffer we have so far.

Thirdly, I don't think I could handle the potential spoiler details i'd be given to draw before the rest of you could see them. ;)
fuzzy3158 18th Oct 2012, 5:13 PM edit delete reply
If you need two weeks to complete one fullcolor comic page, I would be okay with monthly updates, if that meant the comic would continue at any pace.
Cammiluna 21st Oct 2012, 11:48 AM edit delete reply
Not to say my artwork is anywhere good enough to take over Mugo's main storyline, but the best way to go about the timing is to take time off to complete six pages or so without posting them. When the pages are done, they could be uploaded once a week while I take my time working on later pages. I would have page seven done by the time page two gets posted, page 8 done by the time page four is posted, and so on.

It's basically what I'm going for with this new Banjo-Kazooie comic I'm working on for next year now that i know I can manage three webcomics.

DeadApple 17th Oct 2012, 2:22 PM edit delete reply
they will get over it, I'm sure they will just be glad to have the comic back.
Bonz0 17th Oct 2012, 10:28 PM edit delete reply
Not the same thing Pinstripe. Going from Morg to Obfoscubble is different from going from Morg to a dead comic to a new artist.

If Morg announced that the comic was coming back with a different artist people would be excited and happy that the comic was coming back at all. Anyone who honestly thinks that such a decision would be met with the same whining and complaining it received last time is crazy.
Tobias7 17th Oct 2012, 3:52 PM edit delete reply
Yeah I was really against Ob drawing it, but that was before I understood how Morg feels about drawing. It's one thing if the comics take a little longer but have better art, but it's another if the author isn't having fun with the comic.
*blaZe* 18th Oct 2012, 3:53 PM edit delete reply
I approve of tryouts. and as long as it's checked to be done to morg's standards before being posted, all would be well. plus that'd mean a quick and painless revival of a dead webcomic. of course, morg would likely need to check pages to ensure that they were done right, and the new artist would need to have a lot of time invested in the comic. If I had the confidence in my work, I would offer to keep the comic alive. after all, I have the drive to hold up what's important to me. I'm sure any other artists who were previously fans do as well. The rising question now is "does anybody here besides cammiluna have the skill to do the comic well enough?" I probably do. but the problem is: life hit me pretty damn hard right before morg's life did the same. and I have several projects in their STARTING phases, and I'm still a bit rusty in terms of my artistic mind.
*blaZe* 18th Oct 2012, 3:56 PM edit delete reply
so yeah, I may make an offer eventually, but currently I'm busy and stressed. storyline is my strong suit however, so if/when I do offer, I hope it gets accepted. (reluctantly of course. Someone else offering to keep your project running can be a bit shady.)
*blaZe* 18th Oct 2012, 4:02 PM edit delete reply
Getting ahead of myself again, what's most important now is what morg thinks about artist tryouts in general. sooo.....anything to say in response to the idea of tryouts? also, if a non-pro artist draws, I reccomend you have the pages go through you and be posted by you to ensure proper quality. Just saying.
Tobias7 18th Oct 2012, 9:01 PM edit delete reply
I also would imagine Morg would not want to start the comic up again for just a tryout, so I'd suggest if he wanted to do tryouts (still a big if), to make the artist do fanart first. Have the fanart in the same style the artist would do the comic, but maybe instead of draw the next comic strip, it could be like, draw the crew aboard the chainless. Also that way we could have more Mushroom Go fanart ;)
fuzzy3158 19th Oct 2012, 4:52 AM edit delete reply
Well sure, Morg can hardly dump pages of the story on untested artist, now can he? I would personally have tryouts consist of drawing the characters.
Hah, I would even be okay with multiple artists drawing different pages to up the tempo of the comic :D
Azureink 18th Oct 2012, 12:03 AM edit delete reply
I was unaware that our favorite author didn't like drawing, when he was so good at it. But the explanation is good and sufficient to hold our doubts.

I go AFK for a while, and THIS is what I come back to? ¡_¡
mmmmmblood 18th Oct 2012, 11:45 AM edit delete reply
Everyone, I won't lie. I had just finished typing up a two page response to how I felt about Mushroom Go and attempting to persuade Morg to not give in on it. Upon reading through it I realized It just felt WRONG for me to try and tell him to continue on something I myself have even struggled to get up and running for a similar reason he gave.
I enjoy writing and planning everything from beginning to end before i even attempt to start. Then when I do start it just cant go at the pace i would like to and everything ends up being rushed and sloppy. If I myself can't even get a single one of my projects off the ground who am I to even pretend I can argue with Morg's decision for what to do with Mushroom Go. If I did I would just be spouting hypocritical nonsense and wasting everybody's time.

So if you do continue some time down the line or start something new entirely, I hope I will one day find my way to your work. From when i started on page 46 to today what i can say for certain is that you Morgenstern are a great writer.

Thank you for your time.

Oh jeez wow

I'm a little late to the funeral... I just want to say that I really enjoyed this comic while it lasted, I wasn't as obsessed with it as some people, but when I first discovered Mushroom Go I couldn't stop reading it, even at work (bad girl!) and then on my phone when I was away from my computer. It was so refreshing to see a fan work treated in such an intelligent manner - those things do happen, but rarely - and, much like happened when I first discovered the Mario RPGs, it gave me a fresh new way to look at the Mushroom Kingdom and that whole universe. So thanks for sharing it all with the world, for free, completely out of the goodness of your heart and the fantastic power of your brain. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, and I'm sure your creativity will find a way to express itself that you truly enjoy and feel suited for. I know everyone wants you to bring this back at some point, but I honestly think that while you should keep it in the back of your mind, you need to move on and not worry so much about bygones. You left a work unfinished... but at the same time, you made something that was, in a sense, complete. Just with what you did, you made something that united people, and proved that fandom doesn't have to be vapid shipping nonsense. And that's with not even getting into your main dreams for a story, with something you don't even really LIKE doing! Heck, dude. You are talented.

Hi, random professional artist here. I really enjoyed the writing on this comic, and am very sad to see it go. Mushroom Go gave a new life to an old and already beloved universe, which is a very neat trick that not many people can pull off.

Having said all that... If your reason for not wanting to continue the comic is that the drawing frustrates you, maybe you could find an artist to do it with? I feel that this has real potential. I would be happy to talk to you about becoming that artist.

If you're interested, please reply to the post, and we'll get in touch and hopefully work something out.
fuzzy3158 6th Nov 2012, 11:50 AM edit delete reply
Hello Ghelas, I see you have not taken the effort to read all the comments up here. Can't blame you since there are a lot of them. I'll summarize what you need to know: There is already one artist who has offered to draw one page a week for free, and Morg is thinking it over. If you're gonna be charging more than that, don't count on anything. Morg has worked with a professional writer before, Obfuscobble (if that's how you spell it), but his current situation makes him unable to pay for that sort of work anymore.
I hope this was helpful. I may be stepping out of bounds by speaking in someone else's place, please forgive me for that.
Morgenstern 7th Nov 2012, 2:06 AM edit delete reply
Fuzzy actually summed it pretty well. I'm still wide open for negotiating art duties and have been shooting some E-mails around, but right now the starting bid is at no money involved and will likely be staying there. If you're willing to guarantee a page a week for literally zero dollars, I'd gladly take a look at some of your work.

I don't really expect alot of professional artists to work that kind of schedule out of the goodness of their hearts, which is why I didn't try and advertise the gig in the first place. I'm actually shocked that anybody has stepped forward.
Cammiluna 8th Nov 2012, 7:28 PM edit delete reply
Sometimes what doesn't pay in money pays off in experience and reputation. You already have a candidate with a clear passion for drawing with your universe being an interesting realm to explore and with MuGo's popularity, you might get some candidates that just want the bragging rights of drawing for such a big deal comic with a huge fanbase and never made money off their art in the first place.

Guest 7th Nov 2012, 4:11 AM edit delete reply
Sorry about that, I ended up writing the reply in a bit of a hurry, and only much later realized later that someone already expressed an interest in the art.

I'll keep an eye on the thread, then, in case some of these other offers don't work out... I'd feel a bit bad taking away the opportunity to work on this from somebody else.

One bit of advice, though: the $0 price tag doesn't necessarily have to stay that way. Why not consider a crowdfunding website (like Indiegogo or Kickstarter) to try to raise some money for this, and do it a bit more professionally? Sorry if I seem like I'm poking my nose where it doesn't belong -- but Mushroom Go has a ridiculous amount of potential. I enjoy some Mario games, but they've never really been special to me. This comic, however, practically did what Wicked did for The Wizard of Oz, and pulled it off extremely well at times! This isn't just fan fiction, it's a whole lot of great new concepts perched comfortably on top of the already existing Mario universe. There is definitely something worth continuing here.

Thanks! I assembled and bought all the pieces and my mom helped with sewing and gluing (she's an artist, I'm a software engineer so I decided to ask for her help bringing out the flair of the costume). The hat is a baseball cap with the brim cut off and red felt glued on it and white ribbon in the back (not shown). Then I bought a red shirt and white pants as well as the gloves at a clothing store. The blue sash is blue ribbon, with a few strands sewed together to make it wider. The jacket is actually a blue shirt one size larger than the red shirt, cut up with yellow ribbon sewed on the side. Part of the blue shirt I put below the gloves to create more of a gauntlet look. And the fireflowers are felt and cardboard.

What with the newest movies, I thought I should find out what the original was like. I just finished the 4th episode of season 1.
thegreatandmightyone 27th Nov 2012, 10:21 PM edit delete reply
Just so you know. Every series of Star Trek is on Netflix and you should watch them all because they are fantastic and they make some really good commentary on Human beings. Fueling the addiction.

Because of your comment Amarre, I am so much prouder to stalk the comments. Hats off to you. (But I will mention that you forgot the animated series, which is also on netflix and is pretty ridiculous.)

Me: Mom, I know what I want for Christmas.
Mom: What, honey?

the best part is the title. Funny Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door reference
Tobias7 29th Nov 2012, 1:38 AM edit delete reply
That strip is still my favorite. I've posted it on my Facebook a couple times. Such an awesome twist on Mario. Other people have done it, but not in the same way. I've seen it talked about before, but Morg *showed* it to us. Thank you Morg!

You know what? I was actually hoping this all would actually still go somewhere with Thedandmom offering his/her skills to continue the comic and everything. I really really though they could do it and do a reboot of the series. I'm still hoping. Hah I'll never give up hope. This comic is too good to give up on.
