I go through like a hundred designs for every new villain before hesitantly settling on one, but I think with Fabes, I must have gone through five hundred. I originally envisioned him as a more traditional knight, complete with more armor, a cape, a shield and a helmet. Everything was all grey-silver, and I realized that a character that's serious 90% of the time should probably not have a design quite that boring. His emotions (at least when he's got his Game Face™ on) are pretty limited anyway, but I figured I should at least humor the idea of him heavily emoting by taking the helmet away.

Likewise, you can tick off one of the many, many reasons this chapter is in the particular scenario it is. On a normal day, Martello would be wearing her helmet, and Fabes would have been wearing his helmet and this fight would be between two totally eyeless characters making scowly mouths at each other.

I say all this like I'm some master of facial expressions, but you could probably just tack :O or :l or |:< onto everybody's heads and it'd come out with the same effect. a;kd;fDRAWINGISHARDOKAY

Guy, do you know where all the cookies went?

Why is the sword Fabes's holds blue? Is this a mario reference? Also, is that a scratch under his eye or a stitched up scar (like luffy!)

cheer for the heroes- i mean villeins, i mean the heroes of the story- i mean well actually i don't think there really is a real hero villein relation ship in the story, with the possible exception for that plant monster.
Amaare 12th Jul 2012, 11:14 AM edit delete reply
Cheer the main characters of course!
They may be on the wrong side of the law, but they're Chaotic Good OK?
Also, awesome as some of the villains may be, they can't touch the Chainless crew for pure style...

I dunno... KBB/Shrapnel is quite stylish, for all his hull cracks.

You don't want to know how many characters in highly experimental I've wanted to change designs to AFTER they were drawn on published pages already. The short girl's hairstyle particularly.

I was thinking he looked Beanish, but I wasn't sure if that race would ever come up.
I'm glad it did, M&L:SS is one of my favorite Mario games.

Lol, now I'm wondering how Prince Peasly would turn out in Morg's style.
Probably pretty fem.

I have been reading this comic for quite some time now(more than a year) and have watched your style go from scratches on paper to slightly more clean scratches on paper. And to be honest. It's beautiful. Your stories are intricate, well written, and well met with fans of the genre. The dialog is witty and uncanny. Character development is strong and well timed. Your art matches this so well because it is you who brings your characters to life. By word of mouth I have proclaimed this comic. And though you may have only a few readers, know that you are an inspiration to other comic artists. May your comic be exalted.

guys, he's kooparian, not beanish
he carries the scent of beanish, which would only rule out military affiliation if he was not beanish.
he doesn't have toad skin, and there are only 2 major armies mentioned in the story.
you get what i'm saying, right?
Super Mariachi Bros. 13th Jul 2012, 5:29 PM edit delete reply
Looks Beanish to me. Green skin, round ears... Koopas're green sometimes, but they have pointy ears (when they have ears at all).
Super Mariachi Bros. 13th Jul 2012, 5:34 PM edit delete reply
Also, shouldn't military affiliation be ruled out only if he was Beanish, and therefore from a nation uninterested with war with the Koopas?
Morgenstern 14th Jul 2012, 3:49 AM edit delete reply
Fabes is Beanish.

While only two of the major military forces have been mentioned (pffft more like major military farce for the Toads amirite), there are most definitely others out there. Isle Delfino has a modest navy, for instance, and the Beanbean Kingdom's army isn't known for taking alot of guff. Which is why the Chainless has actively avoided, say, treading on any Beanbean territories.
whistle-tall 15th Jul 2012, 8:49 PM edit delete reply
In a similar vein of military force, how about the bob-ombs of Fahr outpost?
Morgenstern 16th Jul 2012, 9:14 AM edit delete reply
And Nimbus Land, for that matter. Really, there's a bunch of military forces... they're just mostly far and away from any deserts, so the Chainless doesn't have much to fear from them.

The Koopa army is still the most impressive by far, of course--both for sheer numbers and for the where in sweet christmas did you get this technology factor.

Thank you, Morg, for validating my theory that all true scientific achievements have their roots in Santa Claus and his lab elves.

Yeah, I was just thinking of the Dry Dry Outpost, but they would most likely just raid the raiders, then send mouse assassins after them.

In all honesty, this comic has inspired a story that I wrote for a week back during the start of the first King fight. I probably got a third of the way through it, before I had to ask the question of where the Sheriff was and hit the wall.

I'm trying to original-ize it, since I only mention the main cast and use Twisters as a backdrop. My avatar is a sketch of one of the main characters.

I'll try to see if I can get Morg a thanks in the book when I finally finish it.
FuzzyZergling 18th Jul 2012, 5:46 PM edit delete reply
I'm liking the contrast between Shrapnel and Fabes; The big bomb talks constantly, and Fabes says nothing.

Hey guys... I'm going to be making my own web-comic (has a little experience already) and i have three ideas but don't know which one to choose.

The first one is also a Mario comic but it features goombario as the main character just about to attend the University of Goom. He meets friends (some of which are created by me and some of which are already liscend by nintendo) , finds rivals, discovers inter-school conspiracies and starts his own adventure. This story isn't just about goombario's life (studying, attending classes, relationships with other characters) but its also about the battles he has to face in order to prove goombas are not just the 'smallest of small fries'. This comic would give me an opportunity to draw a lot of characters in different shapes and sizes and would allow me to experiment with an open-concept world like the Mario-world.

I have another idea but it's a Pokémon comic. The main character is a bisharp (dark/steel type of the 5th generation) who attends the best fighting school in the world. He is a transfer student but he actually got accepted for his academic skills rather than the physical skills required to keep up and being able to battle. Just when everyone thinks he's weak, he absolutely owns one of the school's most notorious students and is prompted to take the 'six shadows' challenge. He must fight against the six strongest students of the school in an effort to become the leader of the school's social hierarchy. This comic would be the one with the most intense fights but the least developed storyline as it is very simple.

My last idea is a sonic web-comic (sonic is my favourite video game franchise). This story is about sonic and co. being transported to a different dimension. However, all the friends end up separating with some of them seemingly lost forever. The world that they transported too is highly distorted and incredibly random. Sonic also meets people that are not part of his realm such as Silver. No one, not even Eggman/Robotnik can even comprehend the reason for the dimension's irregularity and why they were sent there. Although the comic would have fighting in it, it has a lot of mystery and detective work which would lead to a more developed storyline but super quick fights.

So if you guys don't mind, could you please tell me which idea you think sounds the best? It would be very appreciated. Oh but please don't reply if the answer is "They all suck" or "Do both or all three" or something like that. Thank you in advance.

FuzzyZergling 20th Jul 2012, 5:30 PM edit delete reply
Of those three, I think the first sounds most interesting.
Amaare 20th Jul 2012, 7:32 PM edit delete reply
I would vote for the third.
There are quite enough marioverse comics around already. (I'm not complaining but I would like to see some Sonic world, provided Tails is in it!)
Also, the wierd, distorted world sounds interesting.
Silvayne 21st Jul 2012, 1:40 AM edit delete reply
It really depends on how you pull it all off, but I think the Sonic story is your best bet.

Not only does it sound like an actual Sonic plot, but it would be interesting for a Sonic story to have a mystery plot rather than an action.
Whitenight 21st Jul 2012, 10:14 AM edit delete reply
I like the first idea the best, Goombario was awesome. Would you draw that comic Paper Mario style? Cuz you could play around with the implications of that for some cool effects. The third idea sounds too much like the Sonic Generations plotline, though some key details are different, so you just want to be careful that it isnt going too far with that.
Evdog 22nd Jul 2012, 8:58 PM edit delete reply
I have to say that although my first reaction was "Eww, Sonic...", the third idea seems to have the most potential. It could very much end up being reminiscent of Kingdom Hearts, but without licencing limitations.
Please try your best to keep it original, though, and not rest on stock plots. I reccomend the use of TV Tropes, if you don't use it already.
