Palma may or may not still have a minor neck injury from King Bob-omb's Mike Haggar impression.

Palma may or may not hold a bit of a grudge over it

While I'm tossing out reminders, here's "that thing they did to the Autobomb". I know it's been over a year since that happened so I figured a refresher might be necessary.

Though, it might be funnier if people totally forgot about it, and then it becomes one of those vague anime-peanut-gallery type of statements. You know what I'm talking about? When they're trying to be really mysterious? "It's that man." "He's going to use that attack?" "Yes, that attack." "That thing. The thing we did to the Autobomb."

Man, I still can't believe it's really been two years. Two years. Geeeez.

One of these days I want to read this over again from the start so I can get allll the references.

Happy second anniversary!
Morgenstern 27th Jun 2012, 9:40 AM edit delete reply
It is definitely one of the lesser known problems with story heavy webcomics. I'll probably be linking back to old pages like five or six more times in the course of the next two chapters just so folks'll get what's going on.

It doesn't help that I play a mad game of bait-and-switch with plot points. I like to make the really big, obvious hooks turn out to be barely important (Go having amnesia, for example), but the really silly, tiny, barely memorable questions (like why WAS Guy just carrying around fireflowers?) will have pretty significant answers. I've pretty much boobytrapped the comic with little stupid background stuff that all has ~huge~ implications later down the road--the fact that time carries on so slowly in the world of webcomics means that these little plot bombs are easy to hide, but also means the average reader might be totally confused when I suddenly bust out a minor character from a year and a half prior as having been important the entire time or whatever.

My roommate can barely keep up with events from one month to the other. I've got a pile of dangling elements still waiting from the first twenty pages or so of this comic, some of which might not get touched for another year or two at the rate I'm going.

Yeah buddy
Morgenstern 27th Jun 2012, 9:46 AM edit delete reply
Although in retrospect, I do have a lot of tiny references as well, bordering on in-jokes I guess. Like McCoy constantly betting that Go will suck at fighting / not magically come back to life / not be able to put mad moves on Palma.
Super Mariachi Bros. 27th Jun 2012, 9:55 AM edit delete reply
Personally, I'm more impressed that he's able to look so menacing in that outfit. It's like Willy Wonka had a child with Effigy's sister or something.
Super Mariachi Bros. 27th Jun 2012, 9:57 AM edit delete reply
Also, is KBB/Shrapnel now using folksy-speak, or is it just me?
Morgenstern 27th Jun 2012, 10:25 AM edit delete reply
I try to write him as sounding a bit like Loveless from the movie Wild Wild West--like, a very villainous southern gentleman. I mostly blame it on his prior sporting of suspenders.

Alternatively, he sounds like Foghorn Leghorn if Foghorn Leghorn was a living weapon and military mastermind
Super Mariachi Bros. 27th Jun 2012, 11:09 AM edit delete reply
Also, am currently working on species briefs, using the comic as the primary basis for information.
If I put down anything you want changed, please let me know.
Aquajolt 27th Jun 2012, 11:14 AM edit delete reply
Great. Now I can't NOT hear Loveless when reading KBB/Sharpnel's lines.

Gentlemen Go looks pretty badass in the 4th panel. He should really keep the mustache.
the_unchosen_one 27th Jun 2012, 1:44 PM edit delete reply
Did Shrapnel's head shrink/torso grow since we saw him last? Or is it just the angle?
Morgenstern 27th Jun 2012, 6:25 PM edit delete reply
You would be amazed how hard it is to keep proportions perfectly consistent on a character almost entirely composed of spheres

Like, on normal people-looking characters you can go "this arm is supposed to go down to here, heightwise he usually comes to this other character's chest"

But with Shrapnel it's just CIRCLESCIRCLESCIRCLES so yeah I'm blaming the angle on this one.
Bonz0 28th Jun 2012, 12:24 AM edit delete reply
The fact that he was originally drawn by Obfuscobble doesn't exactly make things easier, right?

Also, did you just change your avatar a few seconds ago?
Morgenstern 28th Jun 2012, 12:47 AM edit delete reply
I always did preliminary sketches of each panel for Obfuscobble to redo later, so it doesn't really change anything. I think I might still have some of the "Morgenstern sketch versions" of some of the Bob-omb Battlefield pages laying around, actually. I'll always remember the piledriver sequence because I took one look at my drawing of it and went "HOO BOY SURE AM GLAD THIS IS OBFUSCOBBLE'S PROBLEM NOW, herpderpherpderp"

I've changed my avatar a couple of times in the past week or so, but I don't think it registers until you legitimately refresh--just switching pages doesn't seem to make the avatar "update right." It should be a kitty cat right now.
Bonz0 28th Jun 2012, 8:22 PM edit delete reply
Nope. It's a polar bear holding a can of soda. Huh. Something must have gone wrong.

I agree that gentleman Go looks epic in his last scene.

Also, Morg, I think that the Extras page should have some of your blooper pages and some of the infamous pages that were removed, like the page with Palma's chest being huge, and the one with her glasses being off...and the ones with her arms being off.

Alot of errors involve Palma
Morgenstern 27th Jun 2012, 6:27 PM edit delete reply
Normally said bloopers are burnt, burnt alive and never spoken of again

In fact now that you've mentioned them... I'm going to have to kill you

Morgenstern 27th Jun 2012, 6:29 PM edit delete reply
He certainly does. I've had a few people trying to talk me back into the suspenders, as well. I'm at the perhaps stage on that one.

Mr. Vareel
My X-Box Live Gamertag "Shrapnl", so talking about this character is going to be confusing for me. Oh well, it can't be helped. (Note: Λctually, there IS a number after "Shrapnl" on my XBL Gamertag, but I'm not saying what it is. I'm only mentioning this because I don't want people sending messages and the like to the unlucky bastard who happens to have the name "Shrapnl" by itself.

Morgenstern, my wife tells me that McCoy looks like a penguin. This isn't a matter of back-seat critiquing, mind. More a matter of observations I find amusing.
Morgenstern 28th Jun 2012, 12:41 AM edit delete reply
Oh, no, I absolutely agree. I couldn't place my finger on it at first, but it's the new eyebrows--his eyebrows are deviously similar to those of a rockhopper penguin. Between that and his beak giving him a bit of a Hawkmouth vibe, I think he might have wandered a bit from his roots as a stereotypical Yoshi's Island raven. I'm not real sure how I feel about it, to be honest--I'm a bit torn on how different he looks than how he's "supposed to look," but at the same time I think 'Scobble's changes did a lot to help visually define McCoy as a character. The eyebrows give him more visual age, which I think was lost in my early depictions--he is the oldest and most experienced member of the cast, but with the square eyebrows and rounder beak he was sometimes thought to be in his 'teens. All the "post-Scobble" changes also help to show off his gruff, "he's a jerk but a cool jerk"itude.

There's something about his current look overall that's inherently funny, though, at a really strange meta level and I think that's why I've been sticking to it. McCoy as an individual has sort of distanced himself from the proud race of ravens, living in castles and acting so pompous and mighty that they quite frankly don't care about gravity. It's oddly fitting that he's "grown out" the eyebrows and taken on a more penguiny visage.
BlueMario 30th Jun 2012, 9:42 AM edit delete reply
Dear god, now I want to see you draw the penguins from Mario 64 and from Paper Mario 1 so bad, it's not even funny

Maybe if we ever manage to leave the desert. I'm thinking we might soon, considering our crew might actually end up on the run from the law. Jack does seem a bit more competent than the police force from the last town
the_unchosen_one 28th Jun 2012, 3:37 AM edit delete reply
That last panel... Didn't Palma start out as our lovable, nerdy, info girl? Now she's very likely going to attempt to rip Shrapnel out of his casing - his military grade, armored, very likely bullet proof casing - with her bare hands? Slow for a bullet my butt
Morgenstern 28th Jun 2012, 4:29 AM edit delete reply
I think people forget that she attempted to literally rip Thrive's heart out

And nearly kicked Go off the ship within minutes of picking him up

She's a nerd, but she definitely has a mean streak to her.
Amaare 28th Jun 2012, 4:08 AM edit delete reply
hehehehehehe... More Palma badassery to ensue I hope!
Also, as a steampunk fan, I greatly approve of Go's current appearence. That look combined with fire magic is frankly epic Mr Morg.

Mr. Morg, are you familiar with "crossing the line” of the 180 Degree Rule? The way the bomb was tossed (fired?), Shrapnel's positioning, Go and Palma's positioning... it seems inconsistent. There's nothing basically wrong with it, but it's technically off.

Just as a disclaimer: I do love this comic.
Lukkai 1st Jul 2012, 8:22 AM edit delete reply
Looks like changing camera angles but consistent positioning to me. But that's basically what the rule is about, if I remember correctly. Not changing camera angle and (most of all) placement too much during the scene. Or am I off?
A Gray Phantom 2nd Jul 2012, 7:20 AM edit delete reply
I'm just imagining it as a performance on a stage. The bomb should have come from the left, not the right. It's nothing too special, really, just a pet peeve of mine. No, pet peeve doesn't really fit here. More like a preference. I can't help but feel a little disoriented with the camera angles changing like that.
A Gray Phantom 2nd Jul 2012, 7:23 AM edit delete reply
In specific: Look at panel 2. The bomb comes from the right, so Shrapnel is over to the right. But...
In panel four, he's on the left, and then...
In panel five, he's on the right again. See how that can be disorienting?
