So I'm back from A-kon! I had a lot of fun, though I sadly didn't get to run into any fans. When I went last year, it was mostly for the heck of it (as I had never been to a convention before); this year, it was more for the learning experience. Hopefully, by this time next year I'll be able to do a panel or something, or at least set up shop in the artist alley. Buttons, shirts, prints and all that are definitely going to get looked into again.

Though, the more I think about it, the more I think I might try and head up northish if I try and make a big con appearance. I don't think too many readers of the comic live around Texas, and I'd kind of like to show up closer to a place people can actually meet me at. I don't know, I just think it'd be neat to actually talk to some of you guys. I'll mull it over, tell me what you think.

For those wondering, the stadium announcer is based on a combination of whatever the crap MC Ballyhoo is and the character of a certain Let's Play guy that I like.

By the way, when I said this was a vacation arc?

I might have lied

I kept getting these two confused today.

Is AKon any good? Like, since going to San Diego Comic Con is now impossible until pigs fly, I need to pick out a new second con venue for the summer and I have friends in texas whose houses I could crash in.

It's... very dense.

It's not Comic Con or PAX big, but Brentalfloss, Team Fourstar and Yaya Han were all there so I guess it's kinda big. I think it's starting to outgrow the place they house it in, but I usually have alot of fun.

Also, they have escalators. I always place bets as to how long it'll take for those escalators to turn into stairs

Oh nooo.... I need something smaller than comic con. I need a break from suffocating unwashed nerd stench of Hasbro and Twilight campers and being run over by motorized wheelchairs.

Otakon was really nice for the 8 years I've attended, but my friends have all outgrown it, and... Homestuck gatherings are much more massive/obnoxious in the East coast. New York Anime Fest just got lucky because NYC is so expensive and they only have one convention center with no hotels in walking distance (I like Homestuck but still).

For animes, I started going to Anime Expo. Much of my friends go there and it's nice and warm from E3's ass being parked at the convention center a few weeks prior. I just hate that all the cool cons are so distant from me. I'm going to AX this year but I have to collect $450 somehow for airfare from new york (and AX charges extra money for all their events). It's just enjoyable going to any convention where there's friends and it'll always be fun regardless of the con. I'll throw parties if I get a hotel room or just gather whatever group i could and we take over a corner of a nearby restaurant with sketchbooks and DSes.

I have a rather funny Otakon gathering story having to do with Cartoon network fart jokes and Mario Poker...

As much as the bronies used to drive me nuts, I think as of this year Homestuck is my fanbase-I'm-sick-of of choice. I don't even have anything against Homestuck, just... everywhere. They were everywhere

But yeah, A-kon's not even that big and I'm already kind of craving a smaller con. I can't imagine going to something big-big-big like Otakon.
Cammiluna 5th Jun 2012, 4:27 AM edit delete reply
Cammiluna
Anime Expo makes Otakon look like rabbit poop, but Otakon has better events, better (yet poorly staffed) art show, and most main events are included in the badge price.

I noticed the cosplayers are different between cons. If you can get past all the massive clusterfuck of Homestucks, Anime Expo has lots of buff men in scantily clad cosplay with fishnet stockings like Man Faye, the Pokemen, and even a super mario group with a man peach. I've never seen an east coast con with such cosplayers, but AX was full of them! Otakon used to have a lot of grown men in Sailor fukus, but that died down since the naruto craze of 2005-ish.
Morgenstern 5th Jun 2012, 4:31 AM edit delete reply
Morgenstern
A-kon had Homestuck, Panties & Stockings everywhere, OMG ALL THE ADVENTURE TIME (I think there was more cross play Adventure Time than there was regular Adventure Time), some League of Legends and alot of comic book cosplay (I blame Avengers on that one, as it was pretty scant last year). I saw some Marios and Peaches but not nearly as much as last year.
Cammiluna 5th Jun 2012, 4:39 AM edit delete reply
Cammiluna
Crossplay Adventure Time has been around since like, that Fiona fanfic episode. When I was meeting a friend of mine at NY comic con/Anime fest, she told me she was dressed as Fiona, so I tried looking for her, but the con had a billion fionas. And then they all gathered at the Cartoon Network panel like a massive plague!

Panty and Stocking, I assume is the new Naruto, but I can confirm that on AX weekend.

San Diego comic con back in 2009 had a zombie fad. Lots of people were dressed as generic zombies, but there was also a zombie batman, zombie joker, and Zombie Waldo with Zombie Carmen Sandiego. I thought it was pretty cool, but I find zombies too disturbingly gross.

I remember last year we had a big Silent Hill thing going on, too. There were a few nurses and one Pyramid Head running around this year but it wasn't nearly the bloody nursefest that it was last time.

Also saw quite a few Power Rangers (mostly Mighty Morphin, a couple of Dino Thunder and Samurai, one really good Gokaiger). I always wait until the last possible minute to even think of a cosplay idea, so I never actually get around to it, but I'm thinking next con I've got a pretty bad ass idea for a Phanto costume. Though, I did promise Brentalfloss that if I attend another con he's at, I'm going to do a little Flossplay. We sort of look alike? I've got a picture, I'll probably post it later.

Funny story, I went to Moccafest last month which is basically like a small artist alley for indie comics and I could have sworn I've seen at least three dozen Ramonas from Scott Pilgrim but they were all just generic hipsters.

I never cosplayed before. Half because I never had the funds for costumes, half because I smile weird in pictures, and then id have to ditch the hat everyone recognizes me by. Id love to cosplay a horrible vriska serket/edward elric bastard child with two fake arms. For one day I swear but I look like a jade harley without buck teeth. I just recently posted in the portrait thread in the cf forums.

(GUYS IM SORRY THIS IS A SUPER LONG COMMENT AND IM SORRY I JUST PRETTY MUCH SPAMMED THIS WHOLE MUGO UPDATE WITH CONVENTION BABBLE)

The fact that you actually MANAGED to get SDCC tickets is a huge feat in itself. The site wouldn't even load for me when those tickets sold out in an hour!

If SDCC is going to be your first con, I'm warning you now that no other con in the country could ever closely compare. Wear your best sneakers because the exhibit hall alone is like a mile long or something. It's divided into several sections: The indies, the publishers, the toys, the TV companies, and the gaming companies. Basically, smaller businesses and toys are on one end, the flashy stuff is near the other. The center point is basically the Sails Pavillon up on the second floor. It's a huge sun room with sails all over.

Spend a good two hours walking around the place just to find specific landmarks:

The Warner Bros. Tower
The G4 loft
The Marvel/DC signs
The obnoxious orange white of Nickelodeon
Anything else that stands out (giant statues, or in Cartoon Network 2011's case, the 10-foot Jake balloon).

I use them as beacons in a sense. When I'm with friends and we lose each other, we use these landmarks to find each other. Do NOT use the Capcom booth as a meeting place. If you're a capcom fan, good luck getting in there.

Expect to be pushed, shoved, run over, and in occasional instances, unable to breathe. It is CROWDED. More crowded on Saturday, so godspeed if you decide to hit the exhibit hall on a Saturday. Also, Andrew Hussie of Homestuck fame will be at the indie area of the exhibit hall, so expect lots of Homestucks to crowd there. If you're at one side of the exhibit hall and want to jump to the other end, Leave the exhibit hall, go upstairs, walk to the other end of the convention center, and go back downstairs. All exits are on one side of the exhibit hall and the convention center as a whole is the about shape of an idle nunchuck, once you identify your landmarks, the hallways will be easy shortcuts.

Eats: GO OUTSIDE. Food is expensive inside convention centers and all restaurants around the building are super crowded. There is a deli by the trolley station where you can buy a day's worth of portable grub for about $10, or you can go to the outdoor mall several blocks from the convention. The mall is about a 20-minute walk, but since most attendees are too fanatic to leave SDCC for very long, their restaurants are less crowded and you can get a table no problem, and there's a hot topic, video arcade, and drugstore there as well. The pigeons will approach you shamelessly for scraps.

If you can stash food where you're crashing, there's a nice supermarket called Ralphs near the con. Sign up for a card and you can stock up on bagels and sale items.

Panels: Get the schedule as soon as it is out and mark your plans. If you're going to a panel of something popular, show up an hour early. If you're going to Cartoon Network's panels, show up four hours early if it means sitting in the room during panels that happen before it. CN panels have lines that zigzag around many halls and they have limited seating. If you're going to a twilight panel, or want any of Hasbro or Mattel's exclusive toys, you have to show up one day prior and camp out overnight by the convention center. I am dead serious.

Lastly, keep a bottle of water of you at all times. There's water fountains by all the restrooms if you want a free refill. Buy a battery-powered phone charger because the con has no standard electrical outlets for you to charge your phone. Since wifi/cellular service is being hogged by thousands of people, your phone will drain faster if you try to use the internet and you will likely have a bad connection anyway. Actual phone service works fine so make your facebook/twitter posts via text message until late night. And Nintendo might have a lounge again this year where you can play all their E3-presented stuff and get free swag. If Nintendo holds its lounge at a nearby hotel again, then anyone in the San Diego area can just walk right in and hang out, even without a comic con badge.

That's what I remember, basically. Good luck!

Cammiluna 5th Jun 2012, 2:52 AM edit delete reply
Cammiluna
The main content box just needs to be set a certain width to stay consistent- mainly for the archives. I should study the default version of this layout to figure out where that setting goes (I'm good with plain HTML, iffy with CSS).

The images are gone because you linked them wrong. The overall template has, the bg for example, "files/background.jpg". This works fine on the front page because it goes to mushroomgo.com/files/background.jpg, but in the subpages, like archive, it will link to mushroomgo.com/archive/files/background.jpg, but the images don't exist there.

Go to all the images in your html and put the full url for the image files, say, mushroomgo.com/files/background.jpg

That will fix them.
Morgenstern 5th Jun 2012, 2:55 AM edit delete reply
Morgenstern
Okay, I think I fixed it. I just needed another forward slash in front of the linked image (/files/background instead of files/background).

I'll... try to fix the archive in a minute. My brain is exhausted

With PNG, you can use tools like optipng or pngcrush to cut the file size down. With the graphics you have, go with a PNG 8 file and you can probably get a way with a smaller than 256 palette as well.
Cammiluna 6th Jun 2012, 12:07 AM edit delete reply
Cammiluna
Transparent gifs is an old technology that still does the job today. In photoshop, give the transparent areas of a graphic an obnoxious, unmatching color like magenta, convert color mode to "indexed", then on the file menu (should this exist in current versions idk), Select Export/GIF and the rest should be self explainitory.
CyberSkull 8th Jun 2012, 8:01 AM edit delete reply
CyberSkull
I really recommend avoiding GIF unless you want to use animation. That's the only useful feature of the format.
Cammiluna 8th Jun 2012, 8:21 AM edit delete reply
Cammiluna
GIFs are really also the best choice for sprites and icons that use very little colors. PNGs are too file-size-intensive for that kind of thing.
CyberSkull 9th Jun 2012, 6:09 AM edit delete reply
CyberSkull
That is usually the result of misconfiguration, leaving metadata on and palette optimization off. ;)
Cammiluna 9th Jun 2012, 9:05 AM edit delete reply
Cammiluna
Makes me want to learn by toying with png settings but photoshop 5.5 doesn't support transparent pngs. It crashes when I load one. XD
