Yeah, it's dumb. I know.

Job sucks, need a new scanner, lost Photoshop, haven't heard from artist in a while (though that may be due to problems of his own still, I dunno). I don't want to go on a big downer whining spree, but things are happening and I'm just not feeling the comic right now. I hate it because there's no real "solution;" last time I had to go on a major hiatus, there was just one thing that had to be fixed and it was easy to fix and then I went back to doing the comic. I can't give a real deadline on when this particular badness stops.

It's not dead. Don't think for a second that it's dead. I have too many hundreds of ridiculous ideas to string out that I've spent over a year setting up for and I'm not quitting on it now, not yet, not after coming this far. I'm just taking a break for me-reasons.

Though I'm sure you've heard that from a bunch of other webcomics that went on hiatus and never came back. I don't really know what else to say. I have a few less... effort heavy side project type things in mind, probably involving regular writing instead of things that require an image editing program (...and process). Check back every once in a while, I might actually be doing something at some point. I don't know.

Morgenstern 7th Apr 2012, 5:03 AM edit delete
So, here is a short hiatus FAQ:

What happened?
I got a new computer! Isn't that fantastic?

...More specifically, remember the last hiatus? It was midway through the Thrive arc, and I asked for donations to get a new computer with. That computer picked up some sort of... super virus. Despite the use of numerous programs, it remained undetectable--yet was eating our bandwidth and slowing down every computer's internet in the house, and possibly sending out spam mails from my E-mail accounts.

Like, seriously, it would choke our internet to a standstill... but everything would be PERFECTLY FANTASTIC again as soon as I cut my computer from the internet.

So, I ended up having to get a new computer. The new computer is fantastic, the problem lies in my scanner. It's a doomsday device, about the size of two and half Sherman tanks (so about half the size of the original XBox). It's so old that it runs on coal power. It has a tiny furnace built in for me to shovel coal into. THESE ARE NOT EXAGGERATIONS

Anyway, they straight up don't have the programs to run this sucker anymore. For my last computer I had to go through a multi-hour brawl with Lexmark customer service to get the stupid thing hooked up, as hardly anyone there even knew this brand of printer / scanner / fax machine / phonebooth even existed, let alone that the beast still lived in someone's house. I didn't want to go through that again--they lost four employees and a young priest during the last installation, I won't suffer them such a curse once more.

Plus, the printer part of my printer/scanner doesn't work at all anymore, so I figured SCREW IT I'll get a new one. (I'm pretty sure it still faxes, so you can stop biting your nails over that one)

Scanners are cheap. You know what's not? Photoshop.

You actually BUY things? What a noob. Just pirate it.
That's not technically a question, and normally I would so shut up. And in fact, last time I did. And the time before that, even. I lost both of those computers to outrageously overpowered (we're talking like, S tier Sagat level) viruses and spyware, as well! I'm sure that's a coincidence though.

It seems silly, but I legitimately hesitate to torrent anything for fear of the curse of Dracula sort of crap that happened before. I spent alot of Benjamins on this computer, and would like to not have to replace it after a year and a half (like the last one!). So I'm babying it. No torrents for you, mister!

It's not even that I can't afford Photoshop, I just can't afford it right now. After dumping cash into a new computer, my bank account needs to take a little vay-kay, get its head straight and then I can buy Photoshop. As a few people guessed, though, that's not really the main issue and I sadly can't just throw money at the real problem.

Will donating help?
I'm not gonna tell you not to give me money, if that's what you're asking.

...but in all seriousness, I can't promise that every dollar will bring you closer to not-hiatus or anything like that. I'd likely blow all your money on hookers and alcohol.

On second thought, my Paypal button is at the bottom of the navbar thataway

It's bright and yellow you can't miss it. Please help me restock my supply of Captain Morgan bring Mushroom Go back with your lovely money

We'll be around. Your comics one of the best out there and you've built up a loyal fan base. Just don't forget about us, and try to make the hiatus months or weeks, not years. Life can be tough and sometimes you need to take a break. I had a family crisis that took 2-3 years to get out of, during that time I couldn't commit to certain things I wanted to. The important thing is first to get the extra time and energy from giving up those things and use it to recharge and fix life problems and second to not give up and come back to it one day. We're here for you, you've made friends and allies through your comic and we'll stick around.

Hey dawg, while i know you've got more than one issue going on with da stuff, perhaps ye wanna find out some core components of what ye need/want (IE: what kind of scanner, the cost of photoshop) maybe get a fundraiser going, hell get said fundraiser as funding for moar comic pages. Lord knows you've got more than enough fans for this. More than one webcomic artist has had his computer explode, while some just waited, those that asked usually received. :D. can't help on the job spree, nor on the artist part. But support is support ya?

As far as I can tell, this is one of the most original approaches to the Mario universe I've ever seen. It's amazing to see the whole point of view turned upside down – what is a cute game from our point of view is a war-torn world filled with bizarre weapons and battle-hungry zealots. Most interesting is how believable everything's told, and how closely you stick to the original world without it seeming like a ripoff for only a second. I do hope this won't be a permanent hiatus, but better you take time off instead of breaking yourself for regular updates. I'll check in occasionally. Thanks for all the work so far.
Lukkai 4th Apr 2012, 10:17 AM edit delete reply
There are comics I'm still checking regularily that have updated about twice the last 18 months.
Or some that have come back after quite some hiatus (the wotch for example).
So don't worry, I'll certainly still be around for quite some time here.

In the meantime I can only advise you to write down any concrete ideas you have so as not to lose them and take your time with fixing the problems. One after the another. Better do it right than half-baked.
Cammiluna 4th Apr 2012, 12:21 PM edit delete reply

I have no writing ideas though.

As a software programmer I can give you advice to deal with your super viruses in the future. Spend $100 and buy an external hard drive. Backup every 1-6 months. When you get a bad virus, wipe your computer. Make sure you keep the OS disks you get with the computer, they are necessary to restore the computer. Wiping the computer takes about an hour, reinstalling the OS and updates takes a few hours, copying the data back takes a few hours, and reinstalling software takes a few hours, so you can go to virus infested to perfect given a day or two (though it won't be a fun day). Even when I don't get viruses I do this every couple years.

Wis 11th Apr 2012, 6:01 PM edit delete reply
Photoshop CS6 is in open beta until the release later this year. Just google it. At least for now that should do the job.

As for the art just post a thread to deviantart or some similar sites or hold a competition with what you have already on the storyboard. That would buy you some time and get you some free art.

A bit more advertising would not kill anybody. (I'm using Adblock anyway)

Sometimes you remind me of the guy from Zebragirl ... but maybe because you are both so whiny ... hope your comic will turn out as good as his.

Morg, Good luck with your endeavors. The offer in my PM still stands if you want to try it.

Also, used old versions of Photoshop come cheap. about three years ago, 5.5 was only $50 and it does all the basic crap that CS does and is just lacking in the fancy brush department, pretty much.

Also, why is there a blood stain on your hiatus sign?

i've got one. when megaman X7 doesn't suck. or when megaman legends 3 gets uncanceled, or when the super mario bros super show gets a 2012 revamp!

I would pay cash monies for those last 2.

I didn't get the comic done yet. I just want to plug a new Mario comic that popped up on the fury to expand your library of Mario comics.

Evdog 3rd May 2012, 3:30 AM edit delete reply
It's got a different feel to it. It could get good, or it could get bad, but it's too early to tell.
Tobias 5th May 2012, 8:50 PM edit delete reply
I'm going with that it'll be bad. I liked some of the concepts but I think he's too crude and immature to truly create a good comic. Between comic 2, about how inner monologuing is dirty and comic 3, about Kamek cursing out Bowser, I just get bad vibes about it and don't really find it a fun read. That being said, I thought comic 8 was brilliant.
Tobias 5th May 2012, 8:56 PM edit delete reply
I think part of the problem is he doesn't have a set style, instead he wanders all over. Sometimes the comic is crude humor (2, 3), sometimes it's pun humor (7), sometimes it's serious(8), and sometimes it breaks the fourth wall(2). And that's only in 10 comics. Maybe once he gets going it'll settle down though, but even in the first few comics of Mushroom Go, for example, there's this lovely consistent feel.
JazzorTia 6th May 2012, 7:54 PM edit delete reply
Hello! I'm Tia, the writer for Koopasta. Thanks for checking out the comic. I would like to point out that the current updates are from two years ago. When the comic began, both the writing style and art style were still being developed. Both things jumped around a great deal while we were trying to find our feet. :) Hopefully you will continue to check it out. We're just Mario fans trying to have FUN, and learning a lot along the way. Mushroom Go is Mushroom Go. Koopasta is Koopasta.
Cammiluna 10th May 2012, 6:32 AM edit delete reply
I read the archive of 15ish pages in one go (when it was on another site) and it felt all in one place to me, especially since the comic was done over a few years and had some long hiatuses. I can only just assume the dabble in different tones isn't for everyone. what is consistency in mario canon

But that was sure a punch of awkwardness there. I'll remember not to promote my own comic here with its incessant change of art style and Kamek's sex life as metaphored with pastries.

Apparently you've never been a fan of anything by Blizzard or Valve.

Soon is a production term that can mean anything from "two days from now" to "10 years from now". My moneys on it being in a range measurable in either days or a week or two.
Raiser 5th May 2012, 9:34 AM edit delete reply
I've always been fond of using Coming Soon™ for my "this is in the works, expect it at some point" work.

Photoshop is in the mail and on its way.

Re-read the archive recently and some of the comics are shrunk down to the point where I can't read anything. :( Wasn't that way before...
Morgenstern 8th May 2012, 6:10 AM edit delete reply
oh god i have no imageshack and i must scream

So I might have to go back and re-do those comics.

It might take me a bit, and will have after Photoshop gets put in. Assuming one of the wizards and/or time travelers I've contracted don't help deal with it before then.

Wow, that's a kick in the... whatever playful mataphor you wanna use.

If anyone saved any comics to thier hard disks and mailed them to you would that help Morg? I never did that myself but I'ma go ahead and make back-ups of my own comics to make sure this don't happen to my comic.

(Using Firefox here)
Morgenstern 8th May 2012, 3:55 PM edit delete reply
I use Firefox, as well. Should be pages 106, 107 and 95 that have the smallness

Oh, I should probably mention that my previous post was not meant as an attack on the guy, but as a post meant to help people understand what he said.
Bonz0 10th May 2012, 4:34 PM edit delete reply
You must have some kind of learning disability if you're not able to understand Wolf's original post.
Cammiluna 10th May 2012, 6:45 PM edit delete reply
Let's not go below the belt by using insults here- ... or is it above the head? I'm not being any better behaved myself, I suppose.
Bonz0 11th May 2012, 3:00 PM edit delete reply
What insults? I didn't say anything negative about having a learning disability, did I? I'm just stating a fact. Would you be offended if I said "People confined to wheelchairs have trouble with stairs" ?
Cammiluna 11th May 2012, 3:58 PM edit delete reply
I get what you mean. I just think that calling out an assumption that someone has a learning disability usually triggers unnecessary ablist drama with some people so it feels like a negative thing in itself. I'm not triggered by this or anything, but I do find the drama pretty frightening.
Grammar Nazi 11th May 2012, 4:56 PM edit delete reply
It doesn't have to be a learning disability, could be a foreigner with english as their second language.
Bonz0 11th May 2012, 8:32 PM edit delete reply
*Heads off to Wiktionary to look up "ablist"*
Pinstripe 15th May 2012, 12:00 PM edit delete reply
Ableist is the more common spelling. It's like sexist or racist but with regards to disability, both mental and physical. Using the terminology of mental illness to disparage someone is considered ableist, for instance.

I noticed Obfuscobble no longer had MG mentioned on his Tumblr. What could this mean??????
Aer 10th May 2012, 2:51 AM edit delete reply
That's worrying. Although I, like many others, prefer Morg's art to Ob's, it was easier on Morg to have someone else do the art.
the_unchosen_one 10th May 2012, 3:50 AM edit delete reply
Cammiluna DID mention drawing comics together at Burge King (or am I remembering the restaurant wrong?). ANYWAY! Let the speculation commence!
Cammiluna 10th May 2012, 6:18 AM edit delete reply
That... Was a joke. Sorry!

The four page minifancomic of beach tag with the chainless wasn't a joke, but I've hit a bunch of snags in my own comics' production that it wasn't doable in this hiatus' time frame.

But I do owe it to the fans for being so nice to me and making me feel like a princess so it will happen when I can get around to it, which would be alongside Immortal Fool's Harhall intermission commentary on fashion statements. And by it I mean the minicomic. Not the Burger King collab. C;
Amaare 10th May 2012, 8:02 PM edit delete reply
Yay minifancomic!
Boo Morganstress!
But really, your art is both great in different ways and while it would be nice to see a bit of each in the other's style, I don't think a take-over would be good.

I managed to find 95 correctly sized

No luck on 106/107, or did you already went around finding backups?

95 link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yupe2yn3e7ms13t/95.jpg
Tobias 12th May 2012, 7:49 PM edit delete reply
I was analyzing it from the programming perspective just in case the originals are intact somewhere and it's which copy is being pointed to that's causing the problem. What I found is that 95, 106, and 107 are pointing to Imageshack whereas the rest are on the Mushroom Go website. My guess is Morg used Imageshack during computer problems and Imageshack glitched, so the pictures probably are gone.
Cammiluna 13th May 2012, 10:12 PM edit delete reply
Comicfury has file size limits, so there's also the possibility of whatever pages were too big for CF had to be hosted offsite. Considering Obfuscobble used just about every color on the digital spectrum AND the fact that these are high quality jpg images probably amounts to massive file sizes.

I hear the file size limit was upped just recently.
Morgenstern 13th May 2012, 11:12 PM edit delete reply
As it turns out, the size limit was upped just enough that I now have room on CF for those particular pages

What a delightful coincidence, life is amazing sometimes
Pinstripe 11th May 2012, 12:10 PM edit delete reply
For any of you who do like Obfuscobble's art, he's currently accepting commissions ( http://obfuscobble.tumblr.com/post/12911655250/commissions-pricing-and-availability ) and his prices are insane for the quality of work he's offering. I can personally vouch that he puts his heart and soul into those pictures. If you have some extra spending money and have an idea for a picture, it's definitely worth taking a look.
Amaare 11th May 2012, 6:40 PM edit delete reply
Wow, seriously considering comissioning him. May have to pick up some more work myself to pay for it mind.
Hmm,I need $95. That works out to abou £59. Yeah, definitely need a bit extra or to save a bit better. Anyone want any stop-motion work doing?
Pinstripe 12th May 2012, 4:52 PM edit delete reply

Super Mariachi Bros. 13th May 2012, 12:42 AM edit delete reply

Morgenstern 13th May 2012, 2:40 AM edit delete reply
Edit: 95, 106 and 107 are mostly fixed. They'll be completely fixed later today, mostly thanks to the mysterious alligator that runs ComicFury.
Tobias 13th May 2012, 8:41 AM edit delete reply
Yay! Glad to hear it! :) In the future you should probably have copies of all your work in a couple places including a local copy on your computer. And when you have a tiny bit of money, spend $100 and buy an external hard drive so you can back up your computer. With your luck on things breaking, you need it.
BlueMario 14th May 2012, 3:19 PM edit delete reply
Watchutalkinbout? I've seen external hard drives (at stores, not online) for around $80.

And even with high-res, multi-color images like these comics, he could probably back up most of them on a 32 gig flash drive
Tobias 14th May 2012, 7:31 PM edit delete reply
True, his comics can be backed up for free with online storage even and he should definitely do that too. I think he should have an external though not just to back his comics up, but his entire computer, perhaps even making reinstalling some of those programs easier.

You're right though, $80 is probably about the right amount, I work with video so I always go for the best bang for the buck and not the cheapest and $100 is usually the sweet spot.
