Still sick, but I'm at least un-sick enough to poop out a comic

This page was originally going to be totally different, but after looking at what I'd made in super-sick-form I decided to scrap it and redo it wholesale

So yeah and stuff

Silverpraetorian 7th Mar 2012, 3:35 PM edit delete reply
I must say this is interesting. From what was said at the start I was under the impression that magic was more widespread among toads.

Oh, and hope you get better soon Morg.
Morgenstern 7th Mar 2012, 3:38 PM edit delete reply
Without spoiling too much, something to keep in mind is what Thrive said about manipulating vim. The old art and magic-magic are almost separate things, though I'll break that down a bit better later
Evdog 8th Mar 2012, 11:32 PM edit delete reply
...so I suppose that the magic-magic is
*ahem* ...modern art?
Bonz0 7th Mar 2012, 10:11 PM edit delete reply
Really? I always assumed Morg was loosely basing the old art on the way powerups are portrayed in the regular Mario canon, where only a few toads are shown to be able to use it. Yvan and Wolley, for instance. If every toad in the Morgoverse was a moderately skilled magician it would completely change the way they relate to rest of the world when compared to the original canon. It would also lead to questions as to how they were so easily pushed around before Mario joined their army.

Plus, there's the way Go struggles with his transformations. I always assumed he was just a mediocre magician and the Old Art was really hard, not that he was a really incompetent magic user in a Witch Species. That's what makes Mario such a scary badass. He's mastered something most people barely know anything about.
Silverpraetorian 7th Mar 2012, 10:43 PM edit delete reply
When go was first asked if he knew magic it sounded like more toads knew how to use it. Like maybe 10% of them or so. For a race to be known for something that next to none of them can do doesn't seam likely, though it is possible.

Going off of what Morg said, and what Thrive said I'd almost consider the old art and magic to being two ways to access the same power source, and the biggest difference is in how they use it. As for what that is, I haven't seen enough clues to put together a theory I'm satisfied with.

I do agree that the likely reason Mario is Mario is because he has some greater control though, whatever that might be.
Bonz0 7th Mar 2012, 11:09 PM edit delete reply
Maybe it has something to do with being star children. They're predisposed to magic of any type. They just use it in different ways. Mario and Luigi use the old art, Peach uses "Wish" magic to both heal allies and, in Bowser's Inside Story, telekinesis. Yoshi can transform by consuming fruit in a practice that seems to his species' equivalent to the Old Art, Wario can use a few powerups and injuries temporarily alter his body instead of rendering him unconscious and Bowser has some fire based magic and can enchant his fire breath.

And Donkey Kong has...uh, I don't know. Maybe he has anti-magic instead? And that's why the Tikis couldn't hypnotize him?
Silverpraetorian 7th Mar 2012, 11:25 PM edit delete reply
Thrive did mention multiple races had as he put it "such potential". Maybe each race has its own way of accessing this power and using it. Morg said the old art and magic are almost separate things, so whose to say what the distinction is at this point.
Bonz0 7th Mar 2012, 10:19 PM edit delete reply
It seems Go and Francis have similar tastes in anime...
Cammiluna 8th Mar 2012, 2:16 PM edit delete reply
Go is basically living the life of a modern-day artist. So much dedication and nothing to show for it.
BlueMario 8th Mar 2012, 2:58 PM edit delete reply
I support Bonz0's theory on the races, Old Art, and magic.

What about the Koopas?
Would they just be a fighting class?
Look at me, turning everything into RPG references/comerisons.
Bonz0 8th Mar 2012, 9:09 PM edit delete reply
In Paper Mario there was a normal Koopa Troopa who could use magic to light his shell on fire or confuse his enemies. It should be noted, though, that he had a blue shell, which is something of a rarity among shell colors.

But even the plain old green shelled Koopa in TTYD had some defensive magic in his ability to create shell shields. Maybe that's an ability green-shelled Koopas master to compensate for their lack of special abilities.

And yeah, I'm calling FP the mario universe equivalent of magic/mana because that's basically what it is. Flowers=Magic in the world of Mario.
Whistle-Tall 8th Mar 2012, 4:53 PM edit delete reply
The (not exactly)heartless Clubba!
In his younger years, mayhaps?
...Wait, would he be the protagonist, or the antagonist in such a movie?
He lived in a place filled with fright-happy Boos who made his life horrible(Tubba scares easily), but the Boos in gusty gulch/forever forest weren't necessarily evil, just pranksters.
So would the movie depict him as a tortured soul, or a devilish ghoul?

Bonz0 8th Mar 2012, 9:13 PM edit delete reply
Erm, what movie? "The Blubbening" is an anime series Francis mentions in Super Paper Mario. Tubba is the protagonist and he fights robots. No speculation necessary.
Whistle-Tall 9th Mar 2012, 1:57 AM edit delete reply
I did remember the title was from/in Super Paper Mario, I guess I forgot it was an anime series in it.
...I don't recall any description of it though.

Oh! Was that the series that had the special movie season ending where Tubba fights evil mistress Bow, and her Mega Mansion Mech of Mutilation?
I loved that movie!
...Until my dvd copy of it melted from sheer awesomeness.

Mr. Vareel
I was going to write a reply, but I couldn't get it to sound right. So you're getting an Excalibur quote instead.

"FOOLS! Do you know what this hat is?" "Huh?" "I asked, do you know what this hat is?" "How should we know that?" "It appears to be made of silk, if that's what you mean." "Fools! If you don't know, I guess I'll have to tell you. The taller the chef's hat, the greater the chef." "...Okay, so what you're trying to tell us the-" "FOOL! Who said that I was a chef?" "Dude, nothing you're saying makes any sense." "Hmph. This is why I can't abide hayseeds." "ΛΛΛΛΛΛΛΛΛΛΛΛΛΛGGGGGGHHHHH! YOU ΛRE BEYOND ΛNOYING!"
Therazan 10th Mar 2012, 7:51 PM edit delete reply
Soo, I don't make sense? Or I'm annoying? I,m not sure what you try to tell me... But I know I'm sometimes hard to understand because I make everything complicated. The fact english is my 2nd language doesn't help either.
Bonz0 10th Mar 2012, 9:38 PM edit delete reply
Hey, I couldn't tell it was your 2nd language. Seems pretty legit to me.
Mr. Vareel 12th Mar 2012, 12:55 AM edit delete reply
Mr. Vareel
I chose the quote because I was thinking about Excalibur while I was trying to write and rewrite the comment I originally intended to post. (I have no idea if what I just wrote makes sense.) I wasn't trying to make any sort of connection between the quote and your comment (at least, not consciously).

In simpler terms:
The quote has nothing to do with your comment and is only a reply because I originally intended to put a genuine reply there. (I think I wrote this "simpler terms" thing for me more than anyone else. I'm dumbing down my work so that I can understand it...what is this I don't even) (Λfter post review: I’m not sure if my “simpler terms” thing is actually simpler than the original…I’m losing my mind in the worst way possible.)
Roy 12th Mar 2012, 3:26 PM edit delete reply
Huh.... *tips head to the side and stares at comic*

...from the start of this comic, I was kinda expecting something more epic than "I started working too much so she dumped me." Seems kinda too 'real world' for the Mushroom Kingdom.

Why couldn't Blair get kidnapped by an irate turtle or something? XD
Grimlock13 13th Mar 2012, 1:39 AM edit delete reply
I have no intention to insult Blair, but she probably isn't important enough to get kidnapped, even by mushroom kingdom standart.
Bonz0 14th Mar 2012, 12:52 AM edit delete reply
Well, she seems to be one of the best Kart Engineers. I don't think it's too far fetched at all to think someone might want to kidnap her and try to put her knowledge into designing machines of a less benign nature.

Whistle-Tall 14th Mar 2012, 11:40 AM edit delete reply
That's a very plausible assertion, mister...
*looks at screenname*
Oh, it was not just an assertion.
I do see the aimed resemblance. However, the lack of that slight lower... beak-lip-thing that occurred in the Paper Mario Games and the stoutness of their beaks(as you already pointed out) does detract from bumpty-ness.

Then again, I am not the most artistically skilled person, so who am I to judge?
Fuddlebob 14th Mar 2012, 1:43 PM edit delete reply

Morgenstern 15th Mar 2012, 3:00 PM edit delete reply
It crossed my mind, though I might still re-use some of the ideas from the "beta version" of this page. Like, it was going to be a totally different concept--my first thought for 117 was to explain the old art itself a little more elaborately, but I realized there's a place a few chapters from now where that might be more appropriate.

Plus the art was awful and I wouldn't expose anyone to that

Yeah, I run like a $100 netbook. I probably could play Wakfu if I tried hard enough, I just don't think I'd be running it well.

I guess if you ever start playing it, you'll be on the north american server, whereas I'm on the international server, oh well.

I don't mean to be impatient, but is the next page going to be held back another week?

It's almost done, should probably be up in a few hours.
