Vacation arc / break chapter thing. I can't do a melon-busting fanservicey beach episode like a SUPER KAWAII DESU MANGA is supposed to have, since (spoiler warning) the comic takes place in a desert. So... you're getting go-kart racing instead. Deal with it.

This was originally just the preliminary sketch and I threw some shading on it at the last minute, which is why it's kinda poop. I might go back and redraw it later with a little more... fine tuning. At the very least, expect next week's to be better.

There's gonna be some questions and I don't know if I can answer them yet. It's gonna be a wacky week, paisanos

Hey, McCoy’s beak actually looks like a beak; it’s not a round…er… (I can’t remember what it’s called.)…squashed circle thing…it’s not a round squashed circle thing anymore. His eyebrows aren’t rectangles anymore either. Even with the return of the old art (no pun intended), McCoy’s updated appearance still lives. I don’t know if I like or dislike that. Oh well, nobody listen to me. I’m just yacking.
Bonz0 2nd Feb 2012, 3:58 PM edit delete reply
Heh, you're not in the minority. It's just that a lot of the people who prefer Morg's art have stopped mentioning it. We ranted and raved back when Morgenstern implied that he might go back to his old art if enough people objected and then we shut up when it was clear he had made up his mind.

You know what? I don't believe you. The first time? Yeah, okay, I'm sure it wasn't intended. The second time? No. I'm not buying it. You intended that pun, so you own up to it.

Give me a better term than "old art" to use and I'll change it. Λlthough I did recognize I was making a pun, it was not my intent. The difference is that I was making a statement that also happened to work as a joke, rather than making a joke that happened to work for my statement.
Bonz0 2nd Feb 2012, 6:54 PM edit delete reply
Alas, I was only joking. Merely attempting to obtain your goat. I assume you are simply using "no pun intended" the same way tropers link certain sentences to "http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AWorldwidePunomenon".

That is, the trope which declares some puns have to be made. There's no point in going out of your way to avoid a pun.

Therazan 3rd Feb 2012, 12:54 PM edit delete reply
Now the answer to THAT is potentially dangerous, even if the Chainless crew blend into a crowd: WHO indeed participate to Mario Kart races? The Dreaded Mario, the 2nd Player Luigi, only slightly less dangerous than his Bros., Bowser, the King of Koopa (I doubt he's kind toward pirates), etc...
Bonz0 3rd Feb 2012, 2:42 PM edit delete reply
Maybe a character of a lower threat level, like Wario or Waluigi. Wario in particular has some bad history with pirates...
Grimlock13 3rd Feb 2012, 4:38 PM edit delete reply
Wario? Lower threat level? I don't think so. He's not a hero but he is still Wario. A guy that can fight Mario to a stand still in a normal situation(no power up).
OneOfTheNamelessRabble 3rd Feb 2012, 5:07 PM edit delete reply
Quite obviously it will be Waluigi. You can only be ignored for so long before you slip up and let your awesome spill out. (Waluigi needs his own game. WAAAAAAAAAA!)

"Expecting your favourite canon character in Mushroom Go? Too bad, Waluigi Time!"
Bonz0 3rd Feb 2012, 6:26 PM edit delete reply
Lower than Mario at least. I'm not saying he's WEAKER. Just that he'd pose less of a threat than, say, Mario or Bowser as Therazan mentioned. He's probably more on par with Luigi. Sure, he's strong, but when it comes to combat strategy, resourcefulness and versatility he's probably ranked the lowest of the Bros. He's not an idiot per se, but when it comes to fights he's pretty straightforward compared to the other Bros.

His acrobatic skills are impressive for his physique but he is still overshadowed by his moustachioed peers when it comes to overall agility. He may not need powerups but the fact still remains that he's not quite as experienced with powerups as Mario and Luigi. Even Waluigi has some magical control over plants and thorny vines whereas Wario will just rely on his brute force or perhaps an explosive of some sort. When he does use powerups they're usually inflicted by enemies, making it useless if none of those enemies are around. He's good at wrestling but when it comes to overall hand to hand combat he's nowhere near the level of Mario or Luigi. Not sure how skilled Waluigi is but it's consistently implied that he has the strongest kicks out of possibly every SMB character. He doesn't have a lot of raw strength to fall back on so this leads me to believe he is more skilled at fighting than Wario.

Wario is also pretty slow. When he does run his coordination suffers quite a bit.

Really, I think the Chainless could be in way over their head when dealing with ANY of the brothers. It's just that I think they would have an even more impossible time dealing with a more balanced combatant like Mario or even Luigi. They simply have less weakness to exploit.

Bonz0 7th Feb 2012, 11:17 PM edit delete reply
Possibly, Rabble, but Waluigi may be at a disadvantage since he is not one of the Star Children like Mario, Luigi and Wario. Then again, I never played Yoshi's Island DS. And it's probably not considered canon....

Intel? I'm just listing some of my observations. For example, Wario is fairly hard to control when he's runs in Wario Land 4. Waluigi can summon walls of vines in Super Mario Strikers Charged and his partner in Mario Party 3 was a pirhanna plant, suggesting he has an affinity with "bad" plants. I'm just paying attention to certain reoccurring themes and patterns.
Cammiluna 7th Feb 2012, 11:59 PM edit delete reply
Yoshi's Island DS had a canon? Of course, I haven't played it either so I have no idea how it fits in Mario's eternally paradoxic timeline.

Goddamn I sure love Mario canon.
OneOfTheNamelessRabble 8th Feb 2012, 9:09 AM edit delete reply
...I see. I guess all I can say in his defense is that Nintendo has never taken the time or opportunity to analyze Waluigi through his own game. (Wario got 4!) I imagine him to be an intelligent grounds-keeper by day, the terror of the mushroom kingdom's underground fighting world by night. (Were you expecting a fair fight? Too Bad. Waluigi Time. WAAAAAA-KICK!!) (-.-)...or something like that.
Morgenstern 8th Feb 2012, 11:28 AM edit delete reply
I vaguely remember it being discussed somewhere (MarioWiki forums? Probably TVTropes) that Waluigi might not be relevant to the universe insomuch as actually doing anything important; he might just be a Wario fanboy that's really good at sports. Like, idiot savant levels of sport talent. He's usually a Technical character at the sports game, showing that he is legitimately skilled at things like baseball--though his "Technical" aspects may just be that he's good at cheating.

Anyway, that's one of the fan theories that I've always kind of liked. Wario might not even like the guy, but recognizes a good tennis partner when he sees one (and Wario would be hard pressed to find a good partner otherwise). Waluigi, meanwhile, sees him as some sort of hero--it would explain why Waluigi just comes out of NOWHERE to play tennis one day without having really done much in-verse, with a REALLY silly gimmick (an upside down L? Come ooon Waluigi). And it explains why Wario doesn't drag him to things that aren't sports related--Wario maybe can't stand the guy, or maybe Waluigi is just not that useful at things that don't involve cheating at sports.

Under that idea, Waluigi might not even be his real name--just the alias he takes as part of being an ascended Wario fanboy. I don't know if I consider it... what's the word? Headcanon? But I think it's a neat potential dimension of the character until Nintendo gives us something more concrete.

I recommend people look up the game Psycho Waluigi if you ever get the chance. Raocow did a Let's Play of it, which is cool because I get to plug a really neat game and Raocow at the same time.
Bonz0 8th Feb 2012, 3:23 PM edit delete reply
Another theory. Wario doesn't drag Waluigi along on his other adventures because Wario's other adventures are usually centered around treasure hunting. Does Wario seem like the kind of guy who would want so share treasure/microgame profits?

I've waited SO LONG for a lakitu to show up in this comic I almost had ideas of having an OC of my own being a lakichick!

I love lakitus!

If anyone wants my thoughts on the art, I've actually first caught wind of this comic about.... less than two weeks before Obfuscobble took over in the art department, so by the time I've caught up with the story (going back and forth between earlier chapters and recent updates), I've grown accustomed to both art styles at once, and the switchback didn't even cross my mind on this page until I started reading the comments. It's crazy. I still love both styles very much, so it's great seeing this again regardless if it's temporary or otherwise.

I just wish sometimes that people would stop nitpicking on visual mishaps of Obfuscobble's work on the pages, it got old like, several pages in after his debut and I think he's done about thirty pages now. "Let's just enjoy the story" I want to say, but I fear triggering daunting debates like the ones I get into with bronies, so I'm just going to say "I wish we can just enjoy the story and our wacky discussions on it without so much nitpicking on art flukes" and I'll let everyone go back to doing whatever they want.
Bonz0 2nd Feb 2012, 7:18 PM edit delete reply
Really? I knew something was "off" the moment I saw the page. I don't think it really clicked until I looked at the pokey. My subconscious linked it to Morg's old avatar, which linked to the time before the art shift.

I think the reason people (see how subtly I distance myself from them by not using "we"?) nitpick his art is because they are under the mostly erroneous impression that the reason Obfuscobble was brought into the equation was to "improve" the art more than it was to put less stress on Morgenstern and allow him to focus on the story.

The reason we (who am I kidding?) don't nitpick on Morg's art is because we like his style. We weren't quite as fond of Obfuscobble's style. Style is a difficult thing to attack, though. I tried to on that first page of the shift. It mostly came across as an angry rant with words like "sparkly" and "pretty" sprinkled throughout. It's difficult to put into technical terms what you don't like about a style. Especially if you're not any sort of artist. So we latched onto obvious, easy targets like inconsistencies with characters' facial structures. And Palma manliness. Palmanliness.
Cammiluna 2nd Feb 2012, 9:37 PM edit delete reply
I can understand perfectly what you mean.

For me, it's rubbed off as spite for the art style changing, but in a technical point of view, comic art is split between line quality/color composition (which i will call "environmental") and perspective/anatomy (let's call this "technical", and when one aspect is spot-on professional, it's super easy to see the weak points of the other half and it will come off as chaotic in terms of readability.

If both the anatomy and composition are on a related level, there is balance. Your eyes can go from one panel to the next, and even though something is stiff or the colors are too primary, it's not chaotic enough to distract from the story because you're not backing away from the screen feeling unsettled because someone's arm doesn't make sense.

Morg's balance between environmental and technical composition is his strong point when drawing the pages. He also draws some really nice ladycurves

Obfuscobble's stong point is his professional quality on environment. He's also really good on the technical front, but sometimes the characters lack consistency (and admittingly, some of those panels look really hard to draw! pff).

Of course, this huge gob of text is mainly about the composition of a comic page.

"Style" is completely subjective.

I swear to god i was gonna draw swimsuits to troll this update but something made me switch Martello's shellmet with a fedora and then this happened. :|

That was a well-worded, informed, and critical interpretation of the two art styles, Ms. Cammiluna.

Still, I prefer Morg's art style. I don't think I'd prefer Obfuscobble's style even if I had started reading when he started. I feel his style would be perfect for a webcomic based on Final Fantasy, but not Super Mario World.

This comment completely flew past me so sorry for the late reply.

I really see where you're getting at with the Mario feel and I'm seeing it now. (Mario 3 for the NES is my favorite game art direction-wise, and Morg's art is like a hand-drawn version of it)

Come to think of it, this is the first time I've seen Mario props in the scenery (like that pipe) since Obfuscobble took over!

I can imagine him doing a really kickass Star Fox comic if he were ever hired to do one. I think Final Fantasy is more for animu.

He does cute anime too, though!

Cammiluna, In the last paragraph, what exactly do you mean by "nitpicking on visual mishaps" (both in Mushroom Go and MLP). I know what you mean by people complaining when Obfuscobble started. Is that what you mean, or something else?

Also, something I made: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw3korPrqxU
Cammiluna 4th Feb 2012, 10:58 PM edit delete reply
By "visual mishaps" I mean stuff like, "She looks too buff in that panel," "What did he do with her boobs!?," and "He looks too weird in that panel". Stuff like that.

Brony debates are a whole different story in which there is now too much pony on the internet, but that topic does not belong here.

Too much pony on the internet? At this point there's too much pony in real life!

Or maybe it's just the table I sit at during lunch. Sometimes it seems every conversation we have falls under "minecraft" or "ponies".

Huh...I don't really see how that's "nitpicking", Cammiluna. I guess we all consider different things to be unimportant, though. People complaining about hair being parted in the wrong direction or a hand looking a bit off or a character standing in an awkward position. Those are the kind of things I'd consider unimportant and unworthy of getting upset about. Not when the same character looks like a completely different person compared to the way he or she was drawn a page or even a panel ago.

I gotta say I was really starting to loose interest in the comic when the other artist was doing the panels for you. It just didn't feel like the characters I knew and loved.

My interest in this comic had almost completely waned, and now I'm eager as hell for the next page, I think that alone says a lot about how much the art-style matters.

thegreatandmightyone 2nd Feb 2012, 9:46 PM edit delete reply
So, since everyone is on the topic of Morgenstern's original art coming back I figured I'd comment this idea. The reason that we tend to like his art better is because he knows the characters better than anyone else, because he created them. It's like when people do fan art, and it turns out fantastic, but it's not really the character, rather a likeness of. And that is why I think we like it better when he illustrates the comic.
Evdog 4th Feb 2012, 10:20 PM edit delete reply
This is a very good point, and I agree with this completely.

An example of this is the difference between "Gargoyles" and it's spin-off "The Goliath Chronicles". Not only was the art style different, but the fleshed-out characters became more one-dimensional, due to different scriptwriters.
Cammiluna 4th Feb 2012, 10:53 PM edit delete reply
That, and Disney wanted a more Nick-Jr approach with having children learn about HUMANITY VALIES and RACISM.

Lakitus are also extreme sado-masochists, as their clouds contain a bottomless supply of spiny eggs which would probably make for an uncomfy ride to other Koopas.

And that's my proposed contribution to Lakitu's Mariowiki article.

Therazan 4th Feb 2012, 12:51 PM edit delete reply
Trivia from the Wiki: it would seems Lakitu are the only Koopa not wearing shoes. At first i though it made sense (who wants shoes if the floor is made of comfy cloud?), but with all thise spiny eggs... Ouch!
Cammiluna 4th Feb 2012, 10:16 PM edit delete reply
They say women can withstand more pain than men so maybe Morg knew this when he made this Lakitu a chick!
Evdog 4th Feb 2012, 11:21 PM edit delete reply
MythBusters tested that, and found that to be true for Mothers, but not other women.

On topic: due to the infinite amount of spiky eggs, maybe there's a Tardis-like secret compartment in the clouds.
Cammiluna 4th Feb 2012, 11:42 PM edit delete reply
W-well those spiny eggs have to come from SOMEWHERE- wait...!

There's also Hammerspace...
Therazan 5th Feb 2012, 8:17 PM edit delete reply
"Hammerspace" and "Tardis-like" pretty much means the same thing...
Cammiluna 5th Feb 2012, 10:23 PM edit delete reply
I learn something new everyday! :)
the_unchosen_one 8th Feb 2012, 2:24 AM edit delete reply
Going back to the gender thing, maybe Spinies are male Lakitus. The cloud might not be "TARDIS-like", but may in fact be a nest for the female Lakitu. Having a very short development period inside the egg, the mother Lakitu is able to use her newly-lain eggs as weapons without any fear of harming the child. Once the eggs land, they partially hatch to create what we know as a Spiny. Eventually, the females discard what is left of their egg-shell and become Lakitus

Also, Sasha seems to be on the verge of being a hipster. Be very careful there Morgenstern
Evdog 4th Feb 2012, 10:23 PM edit delete reply
I'd say that it's a clever disguise. No one would ever look at someone like that and think to themselves "She probably owns that massive pirate ship over there".
the_unchosen_one 5th Feb 2012, 2:53 PM edit delete reply
Hipster Sasha is the captain of the mining drill. It's so underground

After a wonderful engagement of drawing mario villains as magical girls with a friend of mine, I had a few minutes to kill before Gunnerkrigg updated and I'd go to bed.

Sorry for spamming your update so much, Morg! Stop designing such cute girls!
Therazan 3rd Feb 2012, 12:34 PM edit delete reply
Cool so someone else read Gunnerkrigg! XD

Nice drawing btw. Definitely a Lakitu.
the_unchosen_one 3rd Feb 2012, 11:01 PM edit delete reply
I think Morgenstern needs to add a fanart section for you Cammiluna
Cammiluna 3rd Feb 2012, 11:41 PM edit delete reply
No, man! My sketchy garbage with same-face disease on the characters does not need to be immortalized! Lol!

No time to finish this one right now. Good night!

Forget a fan art spot, Cammiluna should draw Mushroom Go if Mogenstern can't. :D
Bonz0 5th Feb 2012, 9:21 PM edit delete reply
Only if Morgenstern gets to draw Immortal Fool!
Cammiluna 5th Feb 2012, 10:34 PM edit delete reply
As much as I truly, TRULY appreciate the ego boost some of you have given me this past weekend, I think a truth stands that Morg and I have never even formally conversed with each other before, and now casual conversation is going to be very awkward for me.

I'm otherwise speechless and don't consider myself worthy even if I had time. But thanks, guys. <3

Ah the old art style. It took me a while to realize that it had actually been gone.

I know what a Swoop is, is Swoopula a band?
hadron36 4th Feb 2012, 1:18 PM edit delete reply
Swoopulas are monsters in Paper Mario. In this World though, it could very well be a band.
CyberSkull 5th Feb 2012, 6:26 AM edit delete reply
Its so hard to keep track of all the variants.

Almost a year ago, Morgenstern wrote on comic #61:

"This is another one of those pages that people are going to look at like, months from now and go "MORGENSTERN YOU SONOVABITCH."

I actually still think this arc was awesome. And I'm convinced knows something about King Bowser... But then again, deep down I'm still convinced Guy is secretly a girl. Especially when I look at the last pannel. (I know it can't be, but I really loved that theory somehow)

Hehe, even the Lakitu's ticket booth looks like a cloud.

Swoopula was the one at the Glitz Pit, right?
BlueMario 4th Feb 2012, 10:28 AM edit delete reply
No, Swoopula was the mas the more-powerful version of the generic enemy Swoopers. I think the Swoopulas appeared first in the Palace of Shadows.

But, yeah. It's nice to have Paper Mario references every-so-often
Link 8th Feb 2012, 11:35 PM edit delete reply
Ah right, I was thinking of Sir Swoop.

But then having a shirt saying "Swoopula" makes no sense =S
BlueMario 4th Feb 2012, 10:26 AM edit delete reply
Yay! Back to the sketchy-ness!
Don't get me wrong, I still like the new guy, but the clasics are classic for a reason.

Also, even Guy's in disguise. Lol

I still want to run a Savage Worlds game with this world.

World 2 is the desert level in Mario Bros. 3

You see what I did there?
Ranter 6th Feb 2012, 2:06 AM edit delete reply
Oh, HECK yes.
I was really not looking forward to checking this at all, but the newest page has really lifted my spirits.

I still wish that Morg and OB would collaborate more. If Morg could draw and Ob could color and smooth the lines, deeper shadows...this would be sooooo perfect.
Antimattergizmo 6th Feb 2012, 4:46 PM edit delete reply
Is it too obvious it 'twas not mentioned so far or people actually didn't see it/ it wasn't there in the first place? I'm talking about McCoy looking much like a certain character that tends to smoke a lot and drink beer in Texas. That, along with Morg's little yup.

I could be right or I just have bad unfunny comedy or my mind
MeowMixIsorCats339 7th Feb 2012, 12:34 PM edit delete reply
You know how you can race as your mii in Mario Kart wii? I wonder if Morgenstern will make a cameo soon...

Who wants to cry?

Go to

So, has anyone noticed this is the first time we see Martello's entire face?
Come on people, she's been wearing something to cover her face for the entire comic and you people don't even notice? For shame.

Anyways though, liking the change back to the old style! Keep up the good work! ^.^

We pretty much saw her entire face in comic 65. Even on this page we're only seeing the half of her face pointed at us.
