Reverse amnesia?.....
Kudos to you Morgenstern. You just blew my mind.

He has the functioning opposite of one of my horrible dreams. I dream I am stuck in high school again (I have had to go back to complete something) and I don't actually end up learning anything other than how anxious high school dreams make me.

Dream learnins' sounds awesome!

Feelin' kinda Soul Eater in here.
Morgenstern 11th Jan 2012, 7:14 AM edit delete reply
It's completely unintentional, though now I can't unsee it. Originally I was just going for a "certain sections of Mario Bros 3" vibe (in addition to obligatory "things that will make more sense later")

Mr. Vareel
That’s right, the decision’s mine. Yes, sir. You could decide too; you’re eligible. When you were cut open like a fish being gutted you must have been afraid, am I right? Λnd wouldn’t it be nice to have a strong mind, one that could get rid of the fear you feel?

(I originally had an Λsura quote here, but I realized the Little Demon fit better.)

Go should really stop playing Ace Attorney before he goes to bed. :P

Wow, this comic has definitely taken an unexpected turn! I hope it comes out well on the other side.

I have one question: is there any reason why he's not wearing a hat in his dream?
Morgenstern 11th Jan 2012, 7:21 AM edit delete reply
Short answer: yes

If there's porn in the library, then I think we've just discovered where wet dreams come from. Pun intended.

Seeing Go in formal attire is ironic but cool.
RedAuthar 11th Jan 2012, 10:54 AM edit delete reply
Maybe it's just me for playing too many video games but...

Does Go look like Liquid Snake to anyone else in the 2nd Panel?

In other news...I like it! More of Go's mysterious...whatever revealed!
OneOfTheNamelessRabble 11th Jan 2012, 12:00 PM edit delete reply
Perhaps it is a matter of...Inception. The only question then is: who would have the technology and the motive to implant ideas into Go's subconscious?

Go looks awesome in that red suit. Makes me want to see the Chainless crew pull off an Ocean's 11 in some Mario-verse-appropriate locale.

Was there ever a casino or a big, Las Vegas-style city in one of the games? I'm not too familiar with the lore, to my shame.

There's also Neo Bowser City (AKA Koopa City), but I don't know if that works for what you're thinking of.
Bonz0 13th Jan 2012, 1:54 AM edit delete reply
The first one that comes to mind for me is the casino from Super Mario Sunshine in the Serena Beach level.
nobody 11th Jan 2012, 5:37 PM edit delete reply
reverse amnesia, does it come from the metal magic or is it a whole plot on its own?
NotJoe 11th Jan 2012, 5:57 PM edit delete reply
I predict that he alternates between amnesia and reverse amnesia every time he gets wasted.
ExarArcian 11th Jan 2012, 6:05 PM edit delete reply
Is that wax at the bottom of that bookshelf?... OR BLOOD? (Or... other?)

Candles = Hot Feet? (Or whatever them candle flames that chase you around are.) They're probably supposed to just be candles, but I wonder of the inspiration, especially with the SMB3 reference.

In panel 2, the white marks in the background... they look like eyes to anyone else? Or am I missing something obvious here?

Definitely a new direction that hasn't been hinted at a whole lot. Delving a little more into the Go situation is much appreciated. Although I'm guessing (perhaps wrong!) that they'll be a chapter in which McCoy features prominently before we go to deep in Go... but this whets my whistle a bit. =)

A Gray Phantom 11th Jan 2012, 6:17 PM edit delete reply
Joking aside, reverse amnesia? Seriously? Is this a seldom used trope I'm unaware of? Methinks Go's history is being retconned at the whims of Willy and his brother Nilly.
Mutterscrawl 11th Jan 2012, 7:18 PM edit delete reply
We don't know enough of his backstory to have anything to Retcon, what are you even talking about?
A Gray Phantom 12th Jan 2012, 1:40 AM edit delete reply
Hm, point. As the writer has mentioned, he started with a bull excuse of, "I don't remember," to, "I got drunk and kinda screwed up."
But this... There wasn't really any foreshadowing to prepare for this scene. There was a dream sequence before, in one of the earliest updates (issue 10), where Go was drawn as a Toad proper, but nothing to suggest that Go has a massive library in his head. There's been no pacing for this at all.
And now that I've looked back at the earlier works, I really have to say that, comparitively, those pages and designs were far more suited to the characters and setting. I'm saying this now because I wanted to allow myself to adjust to the change, and I was more involed with the characters than the art, but after comparing it: Before it felt like a character driven webcomic based off of a popular series of platformers, but now it feels like a character driven webcomic based off of a discreet JRPG.
Mr. Vareel 12th Jan 2012, 2:06 PM edit delete reply
Mr. Vareel
Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but what's a JRPG?
Evdog 12th Jan 2012, 7:13 PM edit delete reply
Japanese RPG
Mutterscrawl 12th Jan 2012, 11:17 PM edit delete reply
Obviously this is the pacing for something further down the line. Though I will agree, the art style's somewhat inconsistent and it's starting to hurt the comic. The new stuff isn't -terrible- but the old stuff, and even the older new stuff, was better.
A Gray Phantom 13th Jan 2012, 2:21 AM edit delete reply
Sure, this is foreshadowing now. What I was saying before, though, was that there should've been a hint at this back in issue #10, "To Sleep is to Dream." Have him tumble through a library in the sky, and bait the readers into asking, "What was that?" That way, when you see Go walking through the library in this issue, it doesn't feel so forced or thrust upon us.
Morgenstern 13th Jan 2012, 3:11 AM edit delete reply
Yeah, I didn't really hint toward this at all
Mutterscrawl 13th Jan 2012, 9:44 AM edit delete reply
Ohhhh... it's THRIVES Knowledge isn't it? Or some evil he defeated before the start of the series :P
MeowMixIsorCats339 14th Jan 2012, 1:25 AM edit delete reply
I started reading the comic at 56.

Bubbles of Nostalgia are bursting in my mind from last year <3

(Happy squeals)
A Gray Phantom 14th Jan 2012, 7:37 AM edit delete reply
Hmm, still feels vague. I mean, that's not hinting at a secret dream library, just that he has bad dreams is all.
Therazan 16th Jan 2012, 1:47 PM edit delete reply

(>_O) don't say anything more on that subject! (I assure you it will only lead to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering; in the form of a flame war. And nobody wants one of those...)

(0_o) um...yeah, my post has teleported to the wrong comment...my comment was for Mutterscrawl and his Jan 13th 2:21 comment. Obviously, there are shenagins involved in this. (I will find you web gnomes!)

Let me add to the "This reminds me" list with Doctor Who's "Silence in the Library."
Dr. Moon: "Go, you read several volumes on military weaponry, which taught you a great deal about bob-bombs. And then, YOU REMEMBERED."
momason 12th Jan 2012, 12:14 PM edit delete reply
good to see you! love the comic
Fortis 12th Jan 2012, 12:44 PM edit delete reply
I'm gonna say that I think this isn't so much dream learning as dream remembering. That library could represent the memories that are stored away in his subconscious, but can't reach consciously. Hence the amnesia. He knew the military hardware info all along, but just didn't remember that he knew it until now.

On a completely different note, someone mentioned a while back doing a tabletop game based off this comic. Would anyone be interested in doing something like that?
Silvayne 12th Jan 2012, 12:55 PM edit delete reply
Mushroom Go: The Movie: The Game: The Search For More Money? That'd be awesome. I know a fair bit of AS3 and Game Design. ...I might be up to it if we can get a small band together.

But really, when did someone mention that?
Fortis 12th Jan 2012, 1:00 PM edit delete reply
Eh, I just recall seeing it in the comments when going on an archive binge. Anyway, I'm sorta new to tabletop games, and I'm just trying to find a system that would work well for this setting. Any advice would be welcome.

It's the Terry Prachett (Discworld) version of knowing the future: you're just remembering things that haven't happened yet. This strip is intriguing enough that I registered and just read the entire archive to find out what the heck is going on. Ironically, I still have no clue. Well played Sir, well played.

I just had the best idea for a cross over ever!

Okay, so the crew is just riding on the chainless, doing their thing, when suddenly they're boarded by a group of robots, proclaiming that they're going to take the ship back in the name of their skipper. So some other stuff happens and eventually, they get Scrapper to join their crew! (that is if Squishie is completely out of the question) I know that scrapper wasn't a part of the sandship crew, but I can totally see him bugging Go and calling him master short pants.

(Note if you haven't played Skyward sword yet you will have no idea what I'm talking about.

...That is all.)

If KBB is in the "Military Weaponry" book, does that mean he's mass produced? (or at least not a unique character) If so, there could be a chance of seeing a different model of him down the road.

I can actually respond to this with someone else's comment. To quote Evdog in the commentary for 103: "He was referred to as <King_Unit_7500>. They have plenty more King Units where he came from..."
