I've mentioned before that sometimes a page or even a whole scene won't play out quite as I originally intended, for one reason or another. In some cases--like the end of this chapter, which I'll bring up again later--it works out for the better, as small mistakes here and there get corrected into a bigger, more satisfying answer (or a least, one that I can work off of further in the future).

Sometimes for one reason or another, I end up having to cut off part of the pictures that Obfuscobble sends me, and I always feel kinda bad because it's like I'm just throwing away little details. Like, I'm trimming off a section of art because LOL DIDN'T NEED THAT MUCH ART AFTER ALL, SORRY. I'm taking some majestic creature and shaving part of it because it doesn't need THAT much fur and we've got wigs to make, guys. And while other people walking by will still think the animal is very graceful and pristine, I can't help but see my atrocities toward nature and all its glories when I look at the cut beast before me.

Look, I haven't slept right in a while*, so my metaphors might be a little (insert humorous and inappropriate sound effects). My point is that Obfuscobble's art and my own writing tend to get chopped up and tossed about and in the end turned into this bizarre sort of... effort salad.

Effort Salad is probably the name of a band somewhere.

*I talk about my lack of sleep as if it's some grand tragedy, and not something entirely my fault. And by my fault, I mean the gaming industry's. How DARE you guys put the release of Dark Souls and Skyrim so close together. You KNEW this sort of thing would happen. AGH.

And then Skyward Sword looms just over the horizon. Le sigh. And Saint's Row 3, I guess, though that's probably the lowest on my gaming totem pole. Geez, I still have alot of post-game in Disgaea 4 to attend to.

No, they didn't show King Bob-omb blowing up, but it's implied. The way Guy is going to McCoy for comfort, as well as the black Bob-ombs remarking that KBB's systems went offline, pretty much implied Squishy self-destructed, just offscreen.

Unless we see Squishy's self sacrifice in the next week's comic, and Squishy just put KBB offline before initiating the self-destruct sequence... Either or is possible.

(Also, just wanted to say I love the comic, guys. Been reading it for a while, it's gold.)

RIP Squishy. You will be missed.

Isn't that an art rule somewhere? 'Explosions should never be off screen'?

I didn't really take to the layout of this comic page. I wish we had seen some explosion or something. Black smoke in the sky? Little cogs/screws flying through the air, bouncing off Guy and McCoy? I didn't get the page at all until I read the comments section and people pointed things out. I thought the 'rumble' sound effect in panel 2 was thunder... (Ya, Ryuu is dense, never claimed otherwise)

Small aggravation, though, still love this comic and eagerly check every Sat...er, Sunday. ^^

I'm not entirely sure this is over. Yes, the bob-ombs said the King was no longer active, but that my just be the command unit or whatever you'd want to call it inside him. The blast core on the BODY was activated, and we didn't see how big of a blast that created. There may still be something in the HEAD that's active, especially considering the body started acting on auto-pilot and speaking in logic once the head was removed. If the head is still in one piece, something on KBB may still be active. This could of course all be completely wrong, and KBB is gone for good though.

Just my thoughts on if this chapter is over or not.
Mr. Vareel 14th Nov 2011, 2:16 AM edit delete reply
Mr. Vareel
You could be right; I haven't seen any convincing (to me) evidence that the head is done for. Frankly, I'd be shocked if the head was completely dead. At the very least, it's just inactive. Like how your computer would be if you pulled the power cord: shocked and confused, and maybe upset, but still functioning. (Please excuse the computer personification, it’s the best way I could describe how a [my] computer functions a little oddly after an unanticipated shutdown.) (No puns intended.)

A few weeks ago, I tried summarising the plot of Mushroom Go to a friend of mine who had never read it. Here's how I went (sorry if it's inaccurate):

"A Toad, named Go, wakes up in the middle of the desert, and is picked up by pirates. He has a fight with one of the crew members, a shy guy weilding a chainsaw, but it turns out that it was only a test/bet to see if he was good enough to be a pirate.

"They then Go and find an abandoned labratory in the desert, where they find valuable information and stuff. The Pianta pirate meets a giant, sentient Piranha Plant called Thrive, who effectually says "Join me, Palma, and I will make your face the greatest in the Mushroom Kingdom". She refuses, and they all kill Thrive, set everything on fire and leave.

"They then Go to a desert town, and they stop for some shopping and drinking. They have a run-in with some gender-ambiguous thugs. Some of them get kidnapped by a very masculine Birdo, who wants to kill them and sell videos of doing so. They all fight Birdo, and kill him/her, before leaving town.

“Then they go (you’re all sick of that pun by now) and find a desert fort, filled with pink bob-ombs, who are at war with the black bob-ombs. Suddenly, the art changes, and readers get upset for about two weeks, before going back to normal. Go and McCoy, the Raven pirate, get kidnapped by the bob-ombs, but they escape. They meet a King Bob-Omb and, at the moment, they’re trying to kill him.”

In explaining this to my friend, I realised that all the story arcs (except maybe the first one) follow the pattern:
1) Setting the location and characters,
2) Introducing the chapter's villain,
3) Explaining at least one main character's back-story,
4) Go getting a power-up and
5) Killing the villain.

I’m not saying that it’s good or bad: I’m just sayin’ that that was the first time I noticed a pattern.
Morgenstern 15th Nov 2011, 8:17 AM edit delete reply
Don't forget 5b), the villain looking dead but then coming back in some sort of semi-destroyed form (Thrive, Bob-omb).

I do adhere to a definite super-sentai-esque monster-of-the-week formula, though that'll probably only last until I get the first round of backstories out of the way.
Evdog 15th Nov 2011, 6:12 PM edit delete reply
Ah, yes... thanks for mentioning 5b).

Okay. I really hope you Call Back on some of the loose ends, like You-Know-Who finally appearing, Palma being told that she's a murderer, Blair, those goons that were with Birdo, etc. If done well, it will add an extra layer of awesomeness upon what already is Mushroom Go.

I shall name my Voltorb "Squishy II"...

I shall also attempt to acquire Skyward Sword before it's been out for a couple years... new video game releases and I do not quite get along.

Venting time! I know Call of Duty is a great series with very solid gameplay, but it's getting stale. I guess if it ain't broke... but MW3 reminds me a whole lot of MW2. First-person shooters in general suffer from the "Get from Point A to Point B while slaughtering anything the targeting reticule says you can" syndrome. It's boring, folks. The buzz over MW3 is irksome.

Huh, I'll admit, I didn't even know what was happening on this page until I'd read some of the comments.

I'm personally of the opinion that, while not all explosions need to be on-screen, one where a character sacrifices themselves should be. Even a long-distance shot of the event, against the backdrop of the desert and the storm, would have worked.

The underground shot of the Bob-ombs could have worked... but I honestly thought the rumbling was, well... the mining equipment or thunder.

I like what is being attempted here; by not showing the explosion, it's hoping the imagination will do a better job, and it's more showing the reactions to the explosion as opposed to the explosion itself. The increase in rain acting as an empathic stand-in for Guy's emotions.

Honestly, thinking about it, I almost think if the first panel had been cut entirely, my own personal confusion would have been resolved. I think still seeing King Bob-Omb upright tricked me into thinking he was still active. Perhaps a panel showing Pinky considering his last options, and then literally a... well, blank space, I suppose? I don't know, I'm not an artist, and couldn't hope to be one. Merely relaying my thoughts. With a internet comic which, by it's nature, is constantly a WIP, this criticism can of course be ignored if meant to set-up something later. (Well, it can be ignored regardless. I don't mind. =P)

I do feel that even with my confusion, I still felt the emotion meant by the last panel came through solidly,, and love the effect of the rain. Obfuscobble's art really shines here. It's almost an opposite page to the fire and intensity to page 101, making the "storm" metaphor happening around it very powerful. Excellent work.

Critique aside: I kind of hope Goo-Go somehow seeped in an saved Pinky. That'd be awesome.
Morgenstern 15th Nov 2011, 8:23 AM edit delete reply
It should be noted that the storm was totally Obfuscobble's idea from the beginning. Like, the darker clouds were added to the scenery in the earlier part of the chapter, culminating in the rain here with no input from me one way or the other. I requested the lightning on the last page, but everything else on that front has been entirely Obfuscobble.

Offscreen kills do work and I like how this became a trend like back when Birdo was done in (I'm finally fully caught up now). Some explosion smoke emitting from the neckhole would have done wonders for visual readability and that would be all it needed, but after two reads of this and the page before, it's all understandable. There's no longer a response from the king so the drilling underground is going to stop and Guy is going to mourn over his new friend's sacrifice.

I think boys just like explosions.

I have to say, I've been hooked on this comic since the fight between Go and Guy, but this last arc leaves me feeling let down.
Not because of the lack of explosion, no no. You present a story akin to Samurai Seven (or The Magnificent Seven): Though they'll only be paid a few scraps, the warriors choose to defend the weak against a dangerously powerful enemy. They have one location (or tower) to protect under siege rules, in what surmounts to be an impossible task since you're dealing with enemies that are programmed and willing to sacrifice themselves.

The reaction to such a task should be as chilling for Go and company as the American Navy during World War II: the Kamikaze were a decidedly frightening threat. Or the fear that was felt during 9/11.

But instead we jumped the warp pipe and faced off against the final boss before having to run the levels. It was a spectacular fight, but I feel like I went from the beginning of a book and flipped all the way to the end.

Or mabye it isn't over yet, and I'm complaining for nothing. I'm still reading, so you're doing something right.

I'm just wondering if you considered making this arc a little longer, or if you needed it to be the same length as the previous one.
Morgenstern 20th Nov 2011, 2:11 AM edit delete reply
I'm pretty much always afraid that a particular chapter is going to drag on too long. It mostly stems from the infrequent updates, and how many things I'm trying to pump out information wise. I find myself focusing on getting out as much of the "essentials" as possible, even though I really would like to stop and tell a longer story sometimes. There's been a couple of chapters, this one included, where I wouldn't have minded doing a bit more with it.

Though, part of it falls to the story itself, as well. King Bob-omb the character was rather eager for the chance to do something important, or at least dramatic, rather than sit around doing idle missions in the middle of a desert that seemed completely irrelevant to the grand scheme of things. The chance to meet some grand criminal on the field of battle was too good for him to pass up, hence his leading Martello right to his location.
